This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the current state of drone technology and its applications in the mining industry. The mining industry has shown increased interest in the use of drones for routine operations. These applications include 3D mapping of the mine environment, ore control, rock discontinuities mapping, postblast rock fragmentation measurements, and tailing stability monitoring, to name a few. The article offers a review of drone types, specifications, and applications of commercially available drones for mining applications. Finally, the research needs for the design and implementation of drones for underground mining applications are discussed.

Stope design is a core discipline within mining engineering. This study analyzes the current state-of-the-art of stope design through a survey addressed to mining industry professionals. In stope design research the dominance of empirical methods has slowly shifted towards numerical methods. Recent advancements have mostly focused on the development of stope optimization algorithms. The survey consisted of 19 questions and was distributed to stope design experts via email, LinkedIn messages, and the Mining Industry Professionals network forum. In total, 36 responses of satisfying quality from 20 countries were received and analyzed. No dominance of a single stope design method was recognized. Empirical methods and personal expertise are still used widely. However, a readiness for change in stope design practice was indicated in 87% of responses. The current needs of the stoping-based underground mining sector are to increase the amount of geotechnical data, automate stope design and implement related software, and integrate these into general mine planning. According to 70% of the participants, acquired geotechnical data should be available within three days to be employed in design practice. The industry is ready to implement more efficient stope design methods if they offer results proven in case studies.

Abstract The paper presents the analysis of the phenomenon of horizontal displacement of surface induced by underground mining exploitation. In the initial part, the basic theories describing horizontal displacement are discussed, followed by three illustrative examples of underground exploitation in varied mining conditions. It is argued that center of gravity (COG) method presented in the paper, hypothesis of Awierszyn and model studies carried out in Strata Mechanics Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences indicate the proportionality between vectors of horizontal displacement and the vector of surface slope. The differences practically relate to the value of proportionality coefficient B, whose estimated values in currently realized design projects for mining industry range between 0.23r to 0.42r for deep exploitations, whereas in the present article the values of 0.33r and 0.47r were obtained for two instances of shallow exploitation. Furthermore, observations on changes of horizontal displacement vectors with face advancement indicated the possibility of existence of COG zones above the mined-out field, which proved the conclusions of hitherto carried out research studies (Tajduś 2013).

Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. Trev. and Patrinia villosa (Thunb.) Juss, are two species of Patrinia recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia with the same Chinese name “Baijiangcao” and similar therapeutic effect in traditional Chinese medicine. The present article is the first comprehensive review on the chemical composition and pharmacological activities of these herbs. In this review, data on chemical constituents and pharmacological profile of the two herbs are provided. This review discusses all the classes of the 223 compounds (phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, terpenes, saponins and volatile components, etc.) detected in the two herbs providing information on the current state of knowledge of the phytochemicals present in them. In the past three years, our research group has isolated and identified about more than 100 ingredients from the two herbs. Therefore, we published a systematic review of our research papers and studies on the two herbs were carried out using resources such as classic books about Chinese herbal medicine and scientific databases including Pubmed, Web of Science, SciFinder, CNKI. etc. The present review discusses the most thoroughly studied pharmacological activities (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antitumor and antiviral activities) of the two herbs. This comprehensive review will be informative for scientists searching for new properties of these herbs and will be important and significant for the discovery of bioactive compounds from the two herbs and in complete utilization of Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. ex Trev. and Patrinia villosa (Thunb.) Juss.

Resilience is critical among survivors of trafficking as they are mostly vulnerable populations who face multiple adversities before, during, and after trafficking. However, resilience in survivors of trafficking is understudied. This scoping review aims to clarify the current state of knowledge, focusing on definitions of resilience, how resilience has been studied, and factors associated with resilience among survivors. Five databases were searched using key words related to trafficking and resilience. Studies were included if they were published in English between 2000 and 2019 and focused on resilience with the study design including at least one of these four features: (a) use of standardized measures of resilience, (b) qualitative descriptions of resilience, (c) participants were survivors or professionals serving survivors, and (d) data sources such as case files or program manuals directly pertained to survivors. Eighteen studies were identified. Findings indicated that resilience was primarily described as emergent from interactions between the survivor and the environment. Resilience in trafficking appeared largely similar to resilience in other kinds of victimization. Nonetheless, trafficking survivors also may display resilience in alternative ways such as refusing treatment. Positive interpersonal relationships were the most commonly mentioned resilience factor. In addition, current research lacks studies featuring longitudinal designs, interventions, participatory methods, types of trafficking other than sexual trafficking, and demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and national origin. Future research needs to establish definitions and measures of resilience that are culturally and contextually relevant to survivors and build knowledge necessary for designing and evaluating resilience-enhancing interventions.

<p>Despite advancements in safety technology, underground mining disasters kill hundreds of people each year. Typically after a disaster, a manned response team will enter the hazardous mine to ascertain its condition and rescue any survivors. A robotic entry platform could significantly reduce the risk to the response teams and the time taken to recover any survivors. However, existing mine search and rescue robots have had limited success in past disasters. Two primary aspects caused the failure of the existing platforms; poor rough terrain ability and lack of ingress protection for the harsh mine environment.  HADES, a novel underground mine reconnaissance robot is developed to address these issues. A lightweight yet robust chassis is manufactured from fibreglass. To allow HADES to operate in the potentially explosive atmosphere, the chassis is protected with a positive pressure gas system, designed to meet the ANZ60079.29 standard. This chassis is sealed against the mine environment with a series of O-rings and lip seals. Whegs are used as the primary locomotion method and are driven with a planetary gearbox and a brushless DC motor. To further improve a rough terrain capability of the locomotion system the rear arm of the chassis is mounted on an actuated pivot, increasing the rough terrain capability of HADES.  To ensure the operator can successfully assess and navigate the mine, HADES carries a comprehensive set of environmental and navigation sensors. The internal electronics and locomotion systems are powered with six Li-Po batteries that achieve an operating time of six hours and an expected range of 25 km.  HADES is 780x800x400 mm and is mostly sealed to the IP68 standard. The locomotion system is robust and can traverse the majority of the terrain expected in an underground mine. Loss of traction is the only problem encountered with the Wheg design. However, this can be easily fixed by changing the tip shape of the Wheg.</p>

The article concerns the condition of automation and robotization of underground mining in Poland. Attention has been focused on the specific character of the mining industry. This limits the possibility of using robotization, and sometimes even the mechanization of certain processes. In recent years, robotic and automated machines and machine system solutions have been developed and applied in Poland. They are autonomous to a various degree, depending on the branch. The type of automation and artificial intelligence depends on the specific use. Some examples presently being used include the MIKRUS automated longwall system and autonomous device(s) for breaking rocks or mining rescue work. In Poland, fully automated plow systems produced by foreign companies are also used. Companies in Poland and international research centers are also actively engaged in the development of underwater and space mining. where robotization is of key importance. Research is also being undertaken by Robotics in Mining, euRobotics and PERASPERA as well as Space Mining Conference.

Critical research needs associated with the effective application of visualization to transportation systems projects are identified. Visualization research needs are discussed within a broader, multidisciplinary context of technology development in the areas of simulation and modeling. Parallels are drawn between the current state of the practice in transportation as compared with that in the military–defense and aerospace areas. Some major differences between those areas and transportation systems development and user environments are noted, in particular ( a) the current absence within the transportation community of a strong government research and development focal point for visual simulation and modeling and ( b) the absence of an economic imperative similar to what prompted the defense community to embrace fully these technologies (i.e., fuel shortages, training system costs, and force readiness).

Recently, the use of extended reality (XR) systems has been on the rise, to tackle various domains such as training, education, safety, etc. With the recent advances in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies and ease of availability of high-end, commercially available hardware, the manufacturing industry has seen a rise in the use of advanced XR technologies to train its workforce. While several research publications exist on applications of XR in manufacturing training, a comprehensive review of recent works and applications is lacking to present a clear progress in using such advance technologies. To this end, we present a review of the current state-of-the-art of use of XR technologies in training personnel in the field of manufacturing. First, we put forth the need of XR in manufacturing. We then present several key application domains where XR is being currently applied, notably in maintenance training and in performing assembly task. We also reviewed the applications of XR in other vocational domains and how they can be leveraged in the manufacturing industry. We finally present some current barriers to XR adoption in manufacturing training and highlight the current limitations that should be considered when looking to develop and apply practical applications of XR.
