In order to obtain a lightweight, high strength, and large design space wooden sandwich structure to meet the needs of modern wooden buildings, the mechanical properties of a fabricated 2D wooden pyramid lattice sandwich structure were studied. In this paper, the mechanical and compressive properties of the specimens with different arrangement of Lattice Sandwich unit cells are studied. The upper and lower panels and core materials are made into a single unit cell by inserting glue, and the prefabricated 2D wooden pyramid lattice truss core sandwich structure is prepared by the mortise tenon splicing method. The results show that the arrangement of the unit cells in the specimen has a significant effect on the bearing capacity, energy absorption, and failure mode of the specimen, and the flat compression performance of the panel-reinforced specimen is better than that of the specimen with unreinforced veneer. The results of finite element analysis are consistent with the test results. The main failure modes are core fracture and panel cracking. These results provide a theoretical basis for the system design of wood-based lattice sandwich structure in the future.

In response to growing interest in lightweight, high-strength wood-based engineering materials, a lattice core sandwich structure made of plywood and birch dowels with improved relative density in its core was designed and fabricated. Flatwise and edgewise compressive experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of the sandwich structure. The effect of relative density on the mechanical properties and failure mode of the structure under flatwise compression was discussed. The theoretical and experimental flatwise compression test results showed good agreement. The results of the edgewise compressive tests of the sandwich structure indicated that face sheet wrinkling, crushing, and macro-shear buckling of the core were the main failure modes. The wood-based lattice sandwich structure has potential applications in the construction industry as beam and plate structures for buildings.

Resistance spot welded 1.2 mm (t)-thick 1400 MPa martensitic steel (MS1400) samples are fabricated and their microstructure, mechanical properties are investigated thoroughly. The mechanical performance and failure modes exhibit a strong dependence on weld-nugget size. The pull-out failure mode for MS1400 steel resistance spot welds does not follow the conventional weld-nugget size recommendation criteria of 4t0.5. Significant softening was observed due to dual phase microstructure of ferrite and martensite in the inter-critical heat affected zone (HAZ) and tempered martensite (TM) structure in sub-critical HAZ. However, the upper-critical HAZ exhibits obvious higher hardness than the nugget zone (NZ). In addition, the mechanical properties show that the cross-tension strength (CTS) is about one quarter of the tension-shear strength (TSS) of MS1400 weld joints, whilst the absorbed energy of cross-tension and tension-shear are almost identical.

A super lightweight deck can enhance load rating and functionality of a bridge, especially those identified as structurally deficient. This study was aimed to develop and experimentally validate a novel bridge deck as an ultra-lightweight low-profile waffle slab of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) with either carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) or high strength steel (HSS) reinforcement. The proposed system lends itself to accelerated bridge construction, rapid deck replacement in bridges with load restrictions, and bridge widening applications without the need to replace girders. Performance and failure modes of the proposed deck were initially assessed through extensive lab experiments and finite element analysis, which together confirmed that the proposed deck panel meets the AASHTO LRFD requirements. The proposed deck system is not susceptible to punching shear of its thin slab and fails in a rather ductile manner. To evaluate its long-term performance, the system was further tested under the dynamic impact of wheel load at the Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) facility of the Florida Department of Transportation using a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS).

The paper makes an analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP Shell in Finite Element, and compares it with the test results. The results show that, by means of this model, mechanical properties of reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP shell can be predicted better. However, the larger the load, the larger deviation between calculated values and test values. Hence, if more accurate calculation is required, issues of contact interface between the reinforced concrete beams and the FRP shell should be taken into consideration.

This study was conducted to determine some physical and mechanical properties of high-strength flowable mortar reinforced with different percentages of palm fiber (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6% as volumetric fractions). The density, compressive strength, flexural strength, and toughness index were tested to determine the mechanical properties of this mortar. Test results illustrate that the inclusion of this fiber reduces the density of mortar. The use of 0.6% of palm fiber increases the compressive strength and flexural strength by about 15.1%, and 16%, respectively; besides, the toughness index (I5) of the high-strength flowable mortar has been significantly enhanced by the use of 1% and more of palm fiber.

This paper makes an experimental study of mechanical properties of high-strength pumpcrete under fire, and the effects of heating rate, heating temperature and cooling mode on the residual compressive strength(RCS) of high-strength pumpcrete are investigated. The results show that under air cooling, the strength deterioration speed of high-strength concrete after high temperature increases with the increase of concrete strength grade. Also, the higher heating temperature is, the lower residual compressive strength value is. At the same heating rate (10°C/min), the residual compressive strength of C45 concrete after water cooling is a little higher than that after air cooling; but the test results are just the opposite for C55 and C65 concrete. The strength deterioration speed of high-strength concrete after high temperature increases with the increase of heating rate, but not in proportion. And when the heating temperature rises up between 200°C and 500°C, heating rate has the most remarkable effect on the residual compressive strength of concrete. These test results provide scientific proofs for further evaluation and analysis of mechanical properties of reinforced-concrete after exposure to high temperatures.

The tensile behaviors of corroded steel bars are important in the capacity evaluation of corroded reinforced concrete structures. The present paper studies the mechanical behavior of the corroded high strength reinforcing steel bars under static and dynamic loading. High strength reinforcing steel bars were corroded by using accelerated corrosion methods and the tensile tests were carried out under different strain rates. The results showed that the mechanical properties of corroded high strength steel bars were strain rate dependent, and the strain rate effect decreased with the increase of corrosion degree. The decreased nominal yield and ultimate strengths were mainly caused by the reduction of cross-sectional areas, and the decreased ultimate deformation and the shortened yield plateau resulted from the intensified stress concentration at the nonuniform reduction. Based on the test results, reduction factors were proposed to relate the tensile behaviors with the corrosion degree and strain rate for corroded bars. A modified Johnson-Cook strength model of corroded high strength steel bars under dynamic loading was proposed by taking into account the influence of corrosion degree. Comparison between the model and test results showed that proposed model properly describes the dynamic response of the corroded high strength rebars.

This study aims to enhance the compressive properties of sandwich composites containing extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam core and glass or carbon face materials by using carbon/vinyl ester and glass/vinyl ester composite Z-pins. The composite pins were inserted into foam cores at two different densities (15 and 30 mm). Compression test results showed that compressive strength, modulus and loads of the sandwich composites significantly increased after using composite Z-pins. Sandwich composites with 15 mm pin densities exhibited higher compressive properties than that of 30 mm pin densities. The pin type played a critical role whilst carbon pin reinforced sandwich composites had higher compressive properties compared to glass pin reinforced sandwich composites. Finite element analysis (FE) using Abaqus software has been established in this study to verify the experimental results. Experimental and numerical results based on the capabilities of the sandwich composites to capture the mechanical behaviour and the damage failure modes were conducted and showed a good agreement between them.

Coupon tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical characteristics of basalt FRP (BFRP) sheet, basalt-carbon hybrid FRP sheets and the corresponding epoxy rein under the effect of freeze-thaw cycling. FRP sheets and epoxy rein coupons were subjected to up to 200 and 250 freeze-thaw cycles respectively. Test parameters included the number of freeze-thaw cycles and the types of FRP composites. Test results show that (1) BFRP sheet perform better than CFRP or GFRP sheets under high freeze-thaw cycles; (2) exposed hybrid FRP sheets not only show very little loss in mechanical properties, but also contribute to the stability of test data; (3) mechanical properties of rein epoxy decrease significantly with increasing freeze-thaw cycles.

Recently, sandwich structures have been widely used in different fields because of their good mechanical properties, but these structures are weak in acoustic performance. In this paper, by combining pyramidal truss core sandwich structure with frame, a new structure is proposed with both good mechanical properties and excellent acoustic performance at low frequency. An analytical model of the pyramidal truss core sandwich structure with frame is developed to investigate the sound transmission loss (STL) performance. Finite element method (FEM) is also used to investigate the STL performance at low frequency. The effects of the incident wave angle and the geometrical parameters on the STL of the structure are discussed.
