Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), derived through hydrolysis of chitosan, has been proved to be an effective plant immunity elicitor, eco-friendly, and easily soluble in water, and influenced several secondary metabolites content to improve fruit qualities. COS are widely used in agriculture to improve the defense response in plants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pre-harvest treatment effect of COS on the quality of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa cv.qingxiang). COS was dissolved in distilled water at a concentration of 50 mg·L−1 and sprayed at four different growth stages of strawberry plants, namely seedling stage, before flowering, fruit coloring (the stage of fruit from white to red) and full bloom. Uniform size, shape, color, without any visible damage, and disease-free fruits were harvested for determining the quality. The results showed that the fruit firmness, viscosity, lignin, sugars, protein, total soluble solid, and titratable acidity content increased in COS-treated fruits compared to control. In addition, COS pre-harvest treatment had a positive effect on anthocyanin, total phenol, flavonoid, vitamin C content and DPPH(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activity of strawberry. Moreover, COS also increased the cell wall composition and regulated gene expression of some important enzymes involved in ethylene compound biosynthesis and cell wall degradation. The finding of this study suggests that pre-harvest application of COS is very useful for improving quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberry.

<p>ABSTRACT</p><p><br />Contamination of yellow sap (GK) in the mangosteen fruit leads to low quality of the mangosteen fruit. GK contamination occurs because the cell walls of the fruit is weak due to lack of calcium (Ca) and boron (B). Ca and B plays a role in maintaining the integrity of the cell wall. The study aimed to get the best treatment of dose and the time of application of Ca and B in controlling the contamination of GK on the aryl and mangosteen pericarp. This study used a nested design with 3 factors. First factor was study site, consisting of Cigudeg, Citeureup and Cikembar. The second factor was combination dose of fertilizer, consisting of control (without Ca + B), 1.6 kg Ca tree-1 + 1.553 g B tree-1, and 3.2 kg of Ca tree-1 + 1.553 g B tree-1. The third factor was time of fertilizer application, consisting of anthesis, stadia 1, and anthesis + stadia 1of fruit development. Result of the study showed that location which produced the best fruit was Cikembar where GK on aryl was 22.49% and on pericarp was 29.51%. A dose of 1.6 kg Ca tree-1 + 1.55 g B tree-1 and 3.2 kg Ca tree- 1 + 1.55 g B tree-1 were equally well in reducing GK contamination In aryl (19.91%) and pericarp (28.86%) compared to treatment without Ca and B which showed percentage of GK contaminated fruit on aryl was 50.00% and on pericarp was 56.46%. Ca and B application time was the best at stage 1, which lowered the percentage of GK contamination in aryl (40.44%) and pericarp (27.10%). Ca and B did not affect the physicochemical qualities including diameter, weight, hardness, total soluble solid, total titratable acidity of mangosteen fruit in three study sites.</p><p>Keywords: fertilization, immobile nutrient, cell wall, pericarp, yellow sap.</p><p>ABSTRAK</p><p><br />Cemaran getah kuning (GK) pada buah manggis menyebabkan rendahnya mutu buah manggis. Cemaran GK terjadi karena dinding sel buah lemah akibat kekurangan unsur kalsium (Ca) dan boron (B). Ca dan B berperan dalam menjaga integritas dinding sel. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mendapatkan dosis dan waktu aplikasi Ca dan B yang terbaik dalam mengendalikan cemaran GK pada aril dan kulit buah manggis. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Tersarang (Nested Design) 3 faktor. Faktor ke-1 adalah lokasi penelitian, terdiri dari Cigudeg, Citeureup dan Cikembar. Faktor ke-2 adalah kombinasi dosis pupuk yaitu kontrol (tanpa Ca + B), 1.6 kg Ca pohon-1 + 1.553 g B pohon-1, dan 3.2 kg Ca pohon-1 + 1.553 g B pohon-1. Faktor ke-3 adalah waktu aplikasi pupuk yaitu pada saar antesis, Stadia 1, dan Antesis + Stadia 1 dari perkembangan buah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lokasi penelitian dengan kualitas fisik buah terbaik adalah di Cikembar dengan persentase cemaran GK pada aril (22.49%) dan kulit (29.51%). Dosis 1.6 kg Ca pohon-1 + 1.55 g B pohon-1 dan 3.2 kg Ca pohon-1 + 1.55 g B pohon-1 sama baiknya dalam menurunkan cemaran GK di aril (19.91%) dan di kulit (28.86%) dibandingkan dengan perlakuan tanpa Ca dan B menunjukkan persentase buah tercemar GK pada aril (50.00%) dan kulit (56.46%). Waktu aplikasi Ca dan B yang terbaik adalah pada stadia 1 yang menurunkan persentase cemaran GK di aril (40.44%) dan kulit (27.10%). Ca dan B tidak mempengaruhi kualitas fisikokimia yang mencakup diameter, bobot, kekerasan, padatan terlarut total, asam tertitrasi total buah manggis di tiga lokasi penelitian.</p><p>Kata kunci: pemupukan, hara tidak mobil, dinding sel, pericap, getah kuning.</p>

Two trials in different agricultural farms were carried out from October 2014 to June 2015 with the aim to assess the advantages linked to the substitution of the low density polyethylene (LDPE) films for soil mulching with the Mater-Bi<sup>®</sup> biodegradable films in the strawberry cultivation under tunnel in Campania. Lifetime of biodegradable mulch and influence of type of mulch on the yield and the quality of cvs Sabrina and Fortuna were evaluated. Plants were cultivated on mulched, raised beds, high 40 cm from bottom soil. Mater-Bi<sup>®</sup> film was 20 <span>µ</span>m thick while LDPE film was 50 mm thick. The physical-chemical parameters (firmness, pH, total soluble solid content, titratable acidity and skin colour) and some bioactive compounds (total polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, antioxidant activity) of fruits were determined by three samplings effected in consecutive months (from March to May 2015) of the harvest cycle. Biodegradable film guaranteed an effective mulch along the whole strawberry cycle (9-10 months including the time of drawing up of film). Yields of cv Sabrina on LDPE was 18% higher than those on Mater-Bi<sup>®</sup> while the opposite was detected in cv Fortuna (+10%). The physical-chemical parameters of fruits were not modified by the mulches. The content of the bioactive compounds, instead, resulted, in each time of sampling, significantly higher in fruits picked on Mater-Bi<sup>®</sup> based film.

Os tratamentos, com distância de 2,0 m entre linhas, foram distribuídos em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições de 12 plantas por parcela, em esquema fatorial 4 × 2, correspondente as distâncias de 3, 6, 9 e 12 m entre plantas nas linhas com e sem poda da haste principal, ao atingir o sistema de sustentação. Os componentes avaliados foram número de frutos colhidos, produção por planta, produtividade e na polpa dos frutos, os valores de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, pH e a relação sólidos solúveis/ acidez titulável. A interação entre os fatores estudados exerceu efeitos significativos no número de frutos colhidos, produção por planta, teor de sólidos solúveis e acidez titulável. A produtividade foi influenciada pelos dois fatores de forma isolada. O pH da polpa respondeu apenas ao espaçamento entre plantas nas linhas e a relação SS/AT não foi influenciada por nenhuma das fontes de variação estudadas. O aumento das distâncias de plantio nas linhas promove ganho de produção por planta, mas reduz a produtividade. Plantas podadas na haste principal apresentam maior produtividade. A irrigação com água de qualidade restritiva à agricultura não inibiu a capacidade produtiva do maracujazeiro amarelo acesso Guinezinho e não prejudicou a qualidade química dos frutos.   Palavras-chave: acesso Guinezinho, densidade de plantio, Passiflora edulis Sims.     MORAIS, R. The treatments, with inter-row distance of 2 m, were distributed in randomized blocks, with four replications of 12 plants per plot, in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to intra-row distances of 3, 6, 9 and 12 m for plants with and without pruned main stem, upon reaching the support system. The evaluated components were number of fruit harvested, production per plant, fruit yield and in the fruit pulp, the analyzed components were soluble solid content, titratable acidity, pH and soluble solid content/ titratable acidity ratio. The interaction between the factors studied significantly affected the number of fruit harvested, production per plant, solids content and titratable acidity. The fruit yield was influenced by the two isolated factors, but the pH of the pulp responded only to the intra-row plant spacing, and the solids content/ titratable acidity ratio was not influenced by any of the sources of variation studied. Increasing the distances intra-row raises the production per plant, but reduces fruit yield. Plants pruned on the main stem have higher fruit yield. Irrigation with restrictive water quality to agriculture did not inhibit the productive capacity of yellow passion fruit access Guinezinho and did not impair the chemical quality of the fruits.   Keywords: Guinezinho access, planting density, Passiflora edulis Sims.

Brazil has a large variety of native and exotic fruit species, including the gabiroba, which can be sources of income for the population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the post-harvest behavior of gabiroba fruit by maturity stage and storage temperature. The fruits were divided into two lots and stored at temperatures of 6, 12, 24 and 30°C. The first batch was used for the physical and chemical analysis of acidity, soluble solids, firmness, percentage of green color, and visual analysis; this batch was composed of green and yellow-green fruit. The second lot was intended for breath analysis, composed of green, yellow-green, and yellow fruits. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five replications. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Considering the evaluated characteristics, the gabiroba soluble solid/titratable acidity ratio values should be approximately 4.0 for the fruits to be considered acceptable for consumption. For the preservation of the post-harvest quality of gabiroba, it is indicated that the harvest is carried out at the green stage of maturation and that they are stored at a temperature of 6°C. The highest respiratory rates were observed in fruits harvested at the yellow stage, not being recommended its storage.

Aiming to evaluate the postharvest quality of ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ fig fruits grown in semi-arid conditions, this experiment was carried out in November, 2014, where fig fruit variety ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ were harvested from plants located at the didactic orchard of the Federal Rural University of Semi-Arid (UFERSA), Mossoró-RN, Brazil. Fruits were randomly harvested from 30 fig plants, spaced 2 m x 1.5 m, with 2 years old, according to three the fruit development stages (50%, 75% and 100% mature). The fruits were analyzed in Postharvest Physiology Laboratory, where the physical and chemical characteristics were evaluated, using 10 fruits for each stage. The evaluated characteristics were: weight, length, diameter, firmness, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity and vitamin C. For the physical characteristics, fruits 100% mature presented the best results for weight, length and diameter, except for firmness which in fruits 50% mature presented the best results. For the chemical characteristics, only the soluble solid variable was signiicant and fruits 100% mature showed the best result, in this way, the fig tree ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ achieved the postharvest fruit quality and is viable for the semiarid region of the Rio Grande Norte State.

Sufficient number of probiotics in product are required to confer its health benefits to consumers. However, the viability of probiotics can detriment during processing. An approach of emulsion method to provide a physical barrier of probiotics against adverse environmental conditions has received considerable level of interest. Various matrices were used to emulsified probiotics in food product. However, the usage of water/oil/water (W1/O/W2) base to emulsify probiotics for beverages application remained scarce. Thus, this study was to determine the suitability of using W1/O/W2 base to emulsify Lactobacillus plantarum NBRC 3070 to be incorporated into pasteurized soursop juice (Annona muricata L.). Hence, emulsion efficiency (EE%) of L. plantarum NBRC 3070 in W1/O/W2 base, the stability of emulsified cells (log10 CFU/mL) and physicochemical changes of soursop juice (pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solid, viscosity, colour, sensory) during storage were determined. In this study, emulsified L. plantarum NBRC 3070 (109 CFU/mL) was incorporated into soursop juice and stored at 4°C for four weeks. Results obtained with 86.02% ± 0.69 emulsion efficiency (%) of L. plantarum NBRC 3070. Insignificant changes (p>0.05) were notified from viability of emulsified probiotics, pH, titratable acidity and viscosity during storage. Meanwhile, satisfactory parameters (colour, sensory and coliform counts) were obtained at the satisfactory level. As for the conclusion, W1/O/W2 base was able to maintain the survivability of L. plantarum NBRC 3070 in soursop juice during storage and quality of the product. Optimization of parameters such as water/oil compositions and storage time can be further explored to enhance product quality.

ABSTRACT Tomatoes are an important component of the human diet because they are rich in minerals and antioxidants that sequester free radicals in cells, preventing various disorders that affect human health. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen sources and concentrations on antioxidant capacity and physical and chemical quality of tomato fruit. The experiment was conducted in Vitória da Conquista, state of Bahia, Brazil, in the experimental field of Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia. The experimental setup included a randomized block design with four replicates in a factorial layout of 3 × 3 + 1 (control), for a total of 40 plots. The three treatments comprised different nitrogen sources (calcium nitrate, urea, and ammonium sulfate), applied in three doses (140, 280, and 420 kg ha-1). We evaluated firmness, pH, titratable acidity - TA, soluble solid - SS, SS/TA ratio, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and DPPH inhibition, were evaluated after samples were harvested. However, increasing concentrations of N adversely affected the acidity and led to an increase in the SS/TA ratio. Increasing the N concentration also reduced the content of bioactive compounds. excluding carotenoids, which consequently impaired antioxidant activity.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of potassium doses supplied via fertigation on yield and fruit quality of Solo papaya, cultivar THB. The experiment was installed in August 2018 in the Experimental Station of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia, Municipality of Igarapé-Açu, State of Para, Brazil, and lasted for 13 months. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with four replications and treatments applications started in the fifth month after planting. Treatments were four doses of K20 (160, 320, 480 and 640 kg K2O ha-1) that correspond to 50, 100, 150 and 200% of recommended dose based on soil analysis. Potassium was supplied in the form of KNO3, in the irrigation water, associated to the others fertilizers. During the five month harvest period, the papaya yield reached 22.3 t ha-1, fruit number was 67,776 fruit ha-1, fruit weight was about 418.6 g and soluble solid titratable acidity ratio as high as 13.9.

Grafting represents an effective tool for controlling the race 1,2 of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis (FOM) and Didymella bryoniae in melon (Cucumis melo L.). Although not considered a soilborne pathogen, D. bryoniae survives on plant remains in the soil. The lack of effective resistant commercial hybrids and the gradual reduced use of soil fumigation with methyl bromide increase the risk of damages by both these pathogens. We determined the effectiveness of eight commercial rootstocks, ‘RS 841’, ‘P 360’, ‘ES 99-13’, ‘Elsi’ (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne × Cucurbita moschata Duchesne), and ‘Belimo’, ‘Energia’, ‘Griffin’, ‘ES liscio’ (Cucumis melo genotypes), for their resistance to FOM and D. bryoniae. During 2003 and 2004 growing seasons, the inodorus F1 hybrid Incas was grafted onto each of these commercial rootstocks and then evaluated, under greenhouse conditions, in terms of productivity and fruit quality. Cucurbita rootstocks (‘RS 841’, ‘P 360’, ‘ES 99-13’, ‘Elsi’) were highly resistant both to the race 1,2 of FOM (100% survival) and to D. bryoniae (almost absent crown lesions and low leaf disease index); this reaction clearly differed from that of both the C. melo rootstocks (‘Belimo’, ‘Energia’, ‘Griffin’, ‘ES liscio’) and the control Incas. In both years, the highest yield was recorded in the graft combination Incas/‘RS 841’ with 5.6 and 8.1 kg·m−2 during 2003 and 2004, respectively. The Cucurbita rootstock ‘RS 841’ produced yields higher than C. melo rootstocks (‘Belimo’, ‘Energia’, ‘Griffin’, ‘ES liscio’) and the control Incas. Fruit dry matter, titratable acidity, total soluble solid contents, fruit firmness, and Hunter color [L* (brightness), a* (redness), and b* (yellowness) parameters] of grafted melons were similar to those of the plants grown on their own roots.

Nepal is a major producer among top twenty producing country of mandarin orange in the world. The productivity of the mandarin orange is very low as compared to other developed countries. Nutrient management is the serious problem in most of the orchard along the country. The experiment was conducted in Baglung district of Gandaki Province, Nepal in 2017 to study the effect of Integrated Plant Nutrient Management System (IPNMs) in quality parameters of mandarin orange. Seven group of treatment were assigned for experiment. All treatments were replicated three times in randomized complete block design. The fruits of T4 (Integrated nutrient) have greater fruit diameter: 5.26 cm, weight: 83.32 g total soluble solid: 14.53 brix % and lower titratable acidity: 0.846%. Fruits of T7 have more peel percentage (26.07%). These all findings indicate, integrated plant nutrient management system governs the quality of fresh mandarin orange.
