Carbon materials are one of the most fascinating materials because of their unique properties and potential use in several applications. They can be obtained from agricultural waste, organic polymers, or by using advanced synthesizing technologies. The carbon family is very wide, it includes classical activated carbons to more advanced types like carbon gels, graphene, and so on. The surface chemistry of these materials is one of the most interesting aspects to be studied. The incorporation of different types of chemical functionalities and/or heteroatoms such as O, N, B, S, or P on the carbon surface enables the modification of the acidic–basic character, hydrophilicity–hydrophobicity, and the electron properties of these materials, which in turn determines the final application. This book collects original research articles focused on the synthesis, properties, and applications of heteroatom-doped functional carbon materials.

This paper aims to review recent studies in preparing activated carbons from different types of agricultural wastes in Malaysia and how it can help Malaysia manage agricultural waste. It can be seen that most biomasses can be used as precursors to produce activated carbon for a wide range of pollutants and this adsorbent can be modified to optimally function depending on the types of pollutants. Under optimum dosages, modification through chemical activation using acidic, basic, or drying agents has significant effects on the selectivity of the analyte adsorption. The acidic activating agent causes the activated carbon to have negatively charged acid groups which enable it to adsorb cationic adsorbate while the basic activating agent causes the adsorbent to have a positive surface charge and enable it to adsorb anionic adsorbate.

AbstractActivated carbon derived from pine cones waste was prepared by carbonization at 450°C, activated by different activating agents: ZnCl 2, H 2 SO 4 and NaOH, and then pyrolyzed at 600°C. Adsorption of Cr VI and other heavy metals (Mn II, Fe II, Cu II) on activated carbons was investigated to evaluate the adsorption properties. Special attention was paid to the effects of carbon surface functionalities that were analyzed by FT-IR and zeta potential study. Moreover, XRD study of activated carbon was also carried out. Results had shown that activated carbon by NaOH was the best adsorbent for removal of chromium VI from wastewater. The solid-solution interaction was determined by analyzing the adsorption isotherms at room temperature at different pH. When pH is above 4, the removal fraction of Cr (VI) ions decreased with the increase of pH. The removal fraction of Cr (VI) ions decreased below pH 4. The preferable removal of Cu (II) over Mn(II) and Fe (II) could be due to its lower affinity to solvent.Pseudo-second order equation provided the better correlation for the adsorption kinetics data. Equilibrium isotherms were determined by Fowler-Guggenheim model.

<p><strong>PREFACE</strong></p><p>Indonesian Journal of Science and Technology (IJoST) is a peer-reviewed journal that aims to publish and disseminate innovative research articles on the latest developments in all fields of science and technology. The journal publishes original papers in English, which contribute to the understanding of science and improvement of the science and technology. Papers may be theoretical explanation (including computational), experimental observation and analysis, or combination from both theoretical and experimental analysis. The contribution should be unpublished before and not under consideration for publication in elsewhere. IJoST maintains a standard double-blind peer review process. The review process means that the identity with the author, and the reviewer are not known to each other. IJoST is an open-access journal, and in this issue IJoST does not charge for readers, authors, or their institutions for access to the journal articles. This journal was firstly be published on April 30, 2016, and issued every April and October in each year, published by Tim Pengembang Jurnal at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.</p><p>In this issue, we published eight papers, including six original research articles and two review papers. In this issue, we received papers from remarkable researchers in several countries in the world, including Belgium, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, The Netherlands, and Indonesia. The first paper discussed enzymatic cleaning method for reducing membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor. The next paper presented about application of artificial neural network for predicting biodiesel production. In the third paper, authors discussed about comparison of air temperature under global climate change in Japan. In the fourth paper, authors discussed about kinetics and thermodynamic studies the adsorption of phenol on activated carbon. The fifth article presented sludge dewatering process control using principal component analysis and partial least square. The next paper discussed the use of process simulation for plant debottlenecking. The sixth paper is a review article regarding the use of agricultural waste for silica source material. The final paper is a review of high-temperature oxidation of steel in steam condition. AbstractIn water treatment technology, activated carbons are used primarily as sorbents to remove organic impurities, mainly natural organic matter, but also as catalysts in the ozonation process. Commercially available activated carbons are usually contaminated with mineral substances, classified into two main groups: alkali metals (Ca, Na, K, Li, Mg) and multivalent metals (Al, Fe, Ti, Si). The presence of impurities on the carbon surface significantly affects the pHpzc values determined for raw and ozonated carbon as well as their acidity and alkalinity. The scale of the observed changes strongly depends on the pH of the ozonated system, which is related to the diffusion of impurities from the carbon to the solution. In an acidic environment (pH 2.5 in this work), the ozone molecule is relatively stable, yet active carbon causes its decomposition. This is the first report that indirectly indicates that contaminants on the surface of activated carbon (multivalent elements) contribute to the breakdown of ozone towards radicals, while the process of ozone decomposition by purified carbons does not follow the radical path in bulk solution. Carbon impurities also change the distribution of the reaction products formed by organic pollutants ozonation, which additionally confirms the radical process. The study showed that the use of unpurified activated carbon in the ozonation of succinic acid (SA) leads to the formation of a relatively large amount of oxalic acid (OA), which is a product of radical SA degradation. On the other hand, in solutions with purified carbon, the amount of OA generated is negligible.

Background and Objectives: Oral cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the world and oral leukoplakia is an oral potentially malignant disorder that could develop into oral cancer. This systematic review focusses on randomized clinical trials for recombinant adenovirus p-53 (rAD-p53) therapy for the treatment of oral leukoplakia and cancer. Materials and Methods: We searched for research articles on various databases such as Pubmed/Medline, Embase, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infra-structure), Springerlink, cochrane and Web of sciences from 2003 to 2020. MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms were used for the search. Inclusion criteria included original research, randomized clinical trials and articles only in English language. Exclusion criteria were any articles that were not research articles, not randomized trials, non-human studies, etc. The articles were further graded on the Jadad scale. Results: 578 articles were assessed from various databases; only 3 articles were found to be appropriate for this review. Thus, meta-analysis was not performed because of heterogeneity and lack of data. In the three studies, whether rAD-p53 was used as a standalone therapy or with other therapies, there was a beneficial effect of the therapy. Furthermore, there were no serious adverse events and the only adverse events reported were fever, pain at the local injection site, flu-like symptoms and lowered WBC count. Conclusions: Thus, we can conclude that this therapy has a potential for beneficial therapeutic effects and further clinical trials with more patients need to be performed to get better understanding of the effect of rAD-p53 therapy, which probably will pave the way to its approval in other parts of the world.
