In this study, the dependence of the catalytic activity of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG)-supported bimetallic Pd-Au catalysts towards the CO oxidation based on the Pd/Au atomic ratio was investigated. The activities of two model catalysts differing from each other in the initial Pd/Au atomic ratios appeared as distinctly different in terms of their ignition temperatures. More specifically, the PdAu-2 sample with a lower Pd/Au surface ratio (~0.75) was already active at temperatures less than 150 °C, while the PdAu-1 sample with a higher Pd/Au surface ratio (~1.0) became active only at temperatures above 200 °C. NAP XPS revealed that the exposure of the catalysts to a reaction mixture at RT induces the palladium surface segregation accompanied by an enrichment of the near-surface regions of the two-component Pd-Au alloy nanoparticles with Pd due to adsorption of CO on palladium atoms. The segregation extent depends on the initial Pd/Au surface ratio. The difference in activity between these two catalysts is determined by the presence or higher concentration of specific active Pd sites on the surface of bimetallic particles, i.e., by the ensemble effect. Upon cooling the sample down to room temperature, the reverse redistribution of the atomic composition within near-surface regions occurs, which switches the catalyst back into inactive state. This observation strongly suggests that the optimum active sites emerge under reaction conditions exclusively, involving both high temperature and a reactive atmosphere.

AbstractAlthough Cu/ZnO-based catalysts have been long used for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, open questions still remain regarding the role and the dynamic nature of the active sites formed at the metal-oxide interface. Here, we apply high-pressure operando spectroscopy methods to well-defined Cu and Cu0.7Zn0.3 nanoparticles supported on ZnO/Al2O3, γ-Al2O3 and SiO2 to correlate their structure, composition and catalytic performance. We obtain similar activity and methanol selectivity for Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 and CuZn/SiO2, but the methanol yield decreases with time on stream for the latter sample. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy data reveal the formation of reduced Zn species coexisting with ZnO on CuZn/SiO2. Near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows Zn surface segregation and the formation of a ZnO-rich shell on CuZn/SiO2. In this work we demonstrate the beneficial effect of Zn, even in diluted form, and highlight the influence of the oxide support and the Cu-Zn interface in the reactivity.

Sn has been used extensively as an n-type dopant in GaAs grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). The surface accumulation of Sn during the growth of Sn-doped GaAs has been observed by several investigators. It is still not clear whether the accumulation of Sn is a kinetically hindered process, as proposed first by Wood and Joyce, or surface segregation due to thermodynamic factors. The proposed donor-incorporation mechanisms were based on experimental results from such techniques as secondary ion mass spectrometry, Auger electron spectroscopy, and C-V measurements. In the present study, electron microscopy was used in combination with cross-section specimen preparation. The information on the morphology and microstructure of the surface accumulation can be obtained in a fine scale and may confirm several suggestions from indirect experimental evidence in the previous studies.

Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation is considered an important reaction in heterogeneous industrial catalysis and has been extensively studied. Pd supported on SiO2 aerogel catalysts exhibit good catalytic activity toward this reaction owing to their CO bond activation capability and thermal stability. Pd/SiO2 catalysts were investigated using carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation as a model reaction. The catalyst becomes active, and the conversion increases after the temperature reaches the ignition temperature (Tig). A normal hysteresis in carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation has been observed, where the catalysts continue to exhibit high catalytic activity (CO conversion remains at 100%) during the extinction even at temperatures lower than Tig. The catalyst was characterized using BET, TEM, XPS, TGA-DSC, and FTIR. In this work, the influence of pretreatment conditions and stability of the active sites on the catalytic activity and hysteresis is presented. The CO oxidation on the Pd/SiO2 catalyst has been attributed to the dissociative adsorption of molecular oxygen and the activation of the C-O bond, followed by diffusion of adsorbates at Tig to form CO2. Whereas, the hysteresis has been explained by the enhanced stability of the active site caused by thermal effects, pretreatment conditions, Pd-SiO2 support interaction, and PdO formation and decomposition.

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to describe wideband absorbance (WBA) findings in patients with cholesteatomas and retraction pockets (RPs). Design In this prospective study, tympanometry, audiometry, and wideband tympanometry (WBT) were performed on 27 ears with an RP (eight with epitympanic RP and 19 ears with mesotympanic RP), 39 ears with a cholesteatoma (23 ears with epitympanic and 16 ears with mesotympanic cholesteatomas [MCs]), and 49 healthy ears serving as controls. Results Mean WBA at ambient pressure (WBAamb) of both experimental groups was reduced significantly between 0.8 and 5 kHz relative to the control group. The difference between mean WBAamb and mean WBA at tympanometric peak pressure (WBATPP) was greater for the RP (0.12–0.16 between 0.5 and 1.5 kHz) than for the cholesteatoma group (0.03–0.11 between 0.6 and 3 kHz). Mean WBAamb of both epitympanic RP (ERP) and epitympanic cholesteatoma (EC) subgroups was significantly lower than that of the control group. Mean WBATPP of the ERP subgroup attained normal levels as per the control group, while mean WBATPP of EC subgroup was significantly lower than that of the control group at 0.8 to 1.5 kHz and 4 to 5 kHz. In contrast, both mesotympanic RP and MC subgroups demonstrated similar mean WBAamb and WBATPP values. No significant differences in WBAamb and WBATPP results between the RP and cholesteatomas groups were observed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses indicated that the area under the ROC curve for distinguishing between the RP and cholesteatomas groups ranged from 0.44 to 0.60, indicating low accuracy in separating the two groups. Conclusion While it is not possible to distinguish between the RP and cholesteatomas groups based on the WBAamb and WBATPP results, it is potentially feasible to differentiate between the EC and ERP conditions. Further study using a large clinical sample is recommended to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the WBA test to identify the EC and ERP conditions.

ABSTRACTNear-theoretical-minimum values of specific contact resistivity, ρc (in the mid-to-low E-8 Ω-cm2 range) have been achieved for Ni-based contacts to moderately doped (2E18 cm−3) n-type InP. In each case these values are an order of magnitude lower than those previously achieved. These ultra-low resistivities are shown to result when the metallurgical interaction rate between the contact metal and the semiconductor is sufficiently reduced. Several methods of reducing the metal-InP reaction rate and thus achieving lowered resistivity values are demonstrated. We show, for instance, that the introduction of a thin (100Å) Au layer at the metal-InP interface retards metal-semiconductor intermixing during sintering and results in a ten-fold reduction in pc. Another method consists of ensuring the perfection of the near-surface InP lattice prior to and during contact deposition process. Use of this technique has enabled us to fabricate, for the first time, Ni-only contacts with pc values in the low E-8 Ω-cm2 range. We present an explanation for these observations that is based upon the magnitude of the In-to-P atomic ratio at the metal-InP interface.

However, in recent years the difference of Xiaoqing river on both sides have made us know that the importance of this problem. In view of the above, this task is aimed at quaternary shallow of old river course within Xiaoqing River. Our analysis of lithology and sedimentary characteristics are using static cone penetration test and rock core exploration method, and we want to reappear near surface deposition of old river course within Xiaoqing River. The research is close combined with the exploration demand and theoretical study, so it has important theoretical and practical significance.

We have applied the 45° reflectometry for the first time to study exciton-polaritons in quantum wells. The 45° reflectometry is a new polarization-modulation technique, which is based on the measurement of the difference [Formula: see text] between the p-polarization reflectivity (Rp) and the squared s-polarization reflectivity [Formula: see text] at an angle of incidence of 45°. We show that [Formula: see text] spectra may provide qualitatively new information on the exciton-polariton modes in a quantum well. These optical spectra turn out to be very sensitive to the zeros of the dielectric function along the quantum-well growth direction and, therefore, allow to identify the resonances associated with the Z exciton-polariton mode. We demonstrate that 45° reflectometry could be a powerful tool for studying Z exciton-polariton modes in near-surface quantum wells, which are difficult to observe in simple spectra of reflectivity Rp

Sarcodidemnoides misakiense, Oka and Willey. Generic Characters.--Colony (or cormus) forming very thick lobose masses, laterally compressed; sessile, but not encrusting. Excurrent orifices placed on the tips of the knoll-like prominences. Ascidiozooids very numerous, not arranged in systems; branchial sac with four rows of stigmata; canal system complicated, differentiated into peripheral and central portions. Specific Characters.--Atrial apertures of Ascidiozooids simple pores without teeth or languet; spicules fairly abundant, extremely delicate, confined to a thin layer near surface of test. Test gelatinous, containing numerous bladder-cells, crystals, fusiform cells, and pigment concretions. Stomach of Ascidiozooids vertically placed; surface of attachment of colony narrower than the free portion. Colour, brilliant red. Habitat.--Moroiso, Japan, between the tide-marks. N.B.--Since the above was written I have seen for the first time the exhaustive work of Fernand Lahille, entitled ‘Recherches sur les Tuniciers des côtes de France,' Toulouse, 1890. Lahille devotes considerable attention to what have been spoken of above as tentacle-like processes of the larva, figures them in many larvæ, and gives an excellent figure of the metamorphosing larva of Styela glomerata. He gives an opinion as to their significance which I cannot entirely endorse in the light of my own researches on the "Postembryonic development of Styela," commenced last August at Plymouth. However, I hope to return to this question on a future occasion. Lahille raises an objection to von Drasche's genus Didemnoides on the ground that the thickness of the cormus is not an anatomical character, and that the distinction between thick and thin colonies is a purely subjective one. There is no doubt some truth in this; but the difference between a compound Ascidian which possesses, say, a very few spicules, and one which possesses none at all, would appear to be no more fundamental than that between a colony whose mode of growth resulted in the production of a fleshy mass and one which grew in the form of a thin leathery crust. As stated above, von Drasche intends by Didemnoides a fleshy form of Leptoclinum, the test containing spicules, and the Ascidiozooids having four rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. Lahille, on the contrary,applies the name Didemnoides to those Didemnidse which are characterised by the absence of spicules, and the possession of three rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. The compound Ascidian which we have described above has spicules in the test, and four rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. But as it would be too absurd to call the new form "Sarcoleptoclinum," we shall persist in regarding the genus Didemnoides from the point of view of von Drasche.--A. W.
