The current study investigates the content of sugars, organic acids, phenolic acids and flavonoids, as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Balkan-endemic Micromeria frivaldszkyana. Glucose was the most abundant sugar in the plant (2.77%), followed by fructose (1.18%) and galactose (0.82%). Eight organic acids were detected with quinic acid being in the highest content—556.3 mg/100 g DW. From the individual phenolic acids, rosmarinic acid was found in the most significant amounts (2040.1 ± 1.97 mg/100 g) and hesperidin was the major representative of flavonoids with content 131.2 ± 5.6 mg/100 g DW. The antioxidant activity of the plant was studied by six methods: 2,2′-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH)—286.4 ± 10.43 mM TE/g, 2,2′azinobis (3)-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS)—358.4 ± 10.4 mM TE/g, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)—388.0 ± 32.4 mM TE/g, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC)—905.6 ± 19.2 mM TE/g, Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC)—3250.5 ± 208.1 µmol TE/g and Hydroxyl Radical Averting Capacity (HORAC)—306.1 ± 23.5 µmol GAE/g. In vitro antimicrobial activity against nine microorganism was evaluated but the extract displayed antimicrobial activity only against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111 with inhibition zone diameter 9 mm and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) 10 mg/mL.

Aim of the study was to evaluate antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of porcine liver-protein hydrolysates (PLHs) and their fractions recovered from enzymatic hydrolysis. Hydrolysates and fractions were assessed for antioxidants such as 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric-reducing antioxidant power and antimicrobial activity. Inhibition activity for all antioxidant parameters was significantly (P < 0.05) higher for whole PLHs than for its corresponding fractions; however, among their fractions, 5–10 kDa and 1–5 kDa had a relatively higher antioxidant activity than did the other fractions. Trypsin-digested whole PLHs and their fractions exhibited the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, followed by alcalase- and papain-digested PLHs, for all tested microbes. Results accomplished that whole PLHs exhibited better result than its fractions; thus, PLHs can be used as preservatives for food products or utilised for other pharmaceutical purposes.

This study evaluates the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of sapodilla fresh, juice and bar using three extraction solvents with different polarities (70% acetone, 80% ethanol and water). For evaluating antioxidant capacity, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were used. The total flavonoid content (TFC) and condensed tannin of the sapodilla juice and bar extracts were determined as well. Antimicrobial activity was measured using Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Both sapodilla bar and juice produced more inhibition of the DPPH assay with 70% acetone and 80% ethanol than with the water extraction. The reducing ability of fresh sapodilla was on the order of 70% acetone > 80% ethanol > water. The 70% acetone was the best solvent for yielding condensed tannins. For total flavonoid content, fresh sapodilla and the sapodilla bar and juice showed the highest flavonoid content in 80% ethanol. The results showed that the 70% acetone extract for sapodilla bar and juice exhibited stronger antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Despite some antioxidants being lost in processed food, these still retained important sources of bioactive compounds. Antimicrobial activity done showed different selectivity for sapodilla juice and bar.

Protein hydrolysates were recovered from porcine blood hydrolysate (PBH) using enzymatic hydrolysis viz. alcalase, trypsin and papain. The PBH were ultra-filtered by using molecular weight cut off, these PBH and different fractions were evaluated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The PBH and fractions were assessed for antioxidant efficacy viz. 2, 2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and Ferric reducing antioxidant power assay and antimicrobial activity by zone of inhibition assay. All antioxidant parameters assessed for inhibition activity were observed significantly (P < 0.05) higher for whole PBH whereas among fractions (5–10 kDa), (1–5 kDa) for all hydrolysates had comparatively higher antioxidant efficacy. The results showed that PBH obtained from trypsin and its fractions have highest antioxidant activities. The antimicrobial efficacy was also higher for whole PBH than their respective fractions; however, the zone of inhibition varied significantly (P < 0.05) among different fractions. Results revealed that among enzymes trypsin and alcalase could produce peptides with comparatively higher antimicrobial activity for all tested microbes than papain. The results concluded that porcine blood hydrolysates can be fractioned to get lower molecular weight peptides of interest; however, for addition of whole PBH in meat products or other use could be more useful with regards to its antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and economic production.

Natural extracts (rich in bioactive compounds) that can be obtained from the leaves, peels and seeds, such as the studied extracts of Pomegranate (P), Rosemary (RA, Nutrox OS (NOS) and Nutrox OVS (NOVS)), and olive (Olea europaea) extracts rich in hydroxytyrosol (HYT-F from olive fruit and HYT-L from olive leaf) can act as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents in food products to replace synthetic additives. The total phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity (measured by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-Azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazolin) -6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORACH)) and their antimicrobial power (using the diffusion disk method with the Escherichia Coli, Lysteria monocytogenes, and Staphilococcus Aureus strains) were measured. The results showed that all the extracts were good antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds in vitro. On the other hand, their antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity was also measured in fish products acting as preservative agents. For that, volatile fatty acid compounds were analysed by GS-MS at day 0 and 11 from elaboration, together with total vial count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC), E. Coli, and L. monocytogenes content at day 0, 4, 7 and 11 under refrigerated storage. The fish patties suffered rapid lipid oxidation and odour and flavour spoilage associated with slight rancidity. Natural extracts from pomegranate, rosemary, and hydroxytyrosol delayed the lipid oxidation, measured as volatile compounds, and the microbiological spoilage in fish patties. Addition of natural extracts to fish products contributed to extend the shelf life of fish under retail display conditions.

Seaweeds have been consumed since ancient times in different cultures, especially in Asian regions. Currently, several scientific studies have highlighted the nutritional value of algae as well as their biological properties. The present work was directed towards the determination of the nutritional composition (ash, protein, fat, carbohydrate content and energy value), the organic acids content, and also the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of three typical red algae from Galicia: Chondrus crispus, Mastocarpus stellatus and Gigartina pistillata. The nutritional profile was determined by the methods described by AOAC, while organic acids were determined by UPFLC-PDA. The antioxidant activity was assessed using two in vitro assays: TBARS and OxHLIA. At last, antimicrobial activity was tested against two Gram (−), three Gram (+) and three fungus species. The results showed a similar nutritional composition among the three algae, with a low-fat content and a high content of proteins, carbohydrates and energy. Finally, in vitro assays showed significant antioxidant capacity of the three algae and antimicrobial potential against all the tested microorganisms. Thus, the study shows the potential of red algae to be part of the human diet, due to their nutritional content and bioactive properties, acting as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.

The objective of the current study is represented by the determination of silica and a phytochemical screening of phenolic derivates of some Equisetum species. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity for Equisetum pratense Ehrh.,, Equisetum sylvaticum L. and Equisetum telmateia Ehrh. (sin. Equisetum maximum Lam.) were also investigated. The concentration of silicon (Si) in plants was determined by the spectrophotometric method using previous treatment with NaOH 50% both for the stem and the nodal branches [1]. Results obtained varied from 95.12 to 162.10 SiO2 mg/g dry plant which represents 4.44% to 7.58% Si/100g dry sample. Two types of total extracts were obtained using different solvents and were subjected to qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis considering total phenolic content [2]. The highest concentration of investigated compounds was found in the methanolic extract, E. sylvaticum, 196.5mg/g dry sample. Antioxidant activity was monitored spectrophotometrically and expressed in terms of IC50 (�g/mL) [3]. Values gathered ranged from 261.7 to 429.5 �g/mL. The highest capacity to neutralized DPPH radicals was found in E. sylvaticum. In vitro antimicrobial activity was determined using difusimetric method [4]. Testing was performed on four microorganisms: three strains of bacteria and one species of fungi. Different effects were noticed against the bacteria, furthermore the methanol extract appeared to be most efficient. All extracts showed significand antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) and weak to no activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922).

AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the nutricosmetic effect of Asparagus officinalis extracts. The tip and spear of A. officinalis were successively extracted with 95% ethanol. The rutin, phenolic, and flavonoid contents of A. officinalis extracts were investigated. The antioxidant activities were determined by 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and a ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), elastase, and hyaluronidase inhibition were determined by in vitro enzyme reaction assay. The cytotoxicity was analyzed on peripheral blood mononuclear cellss. Findings revealed that drying temperature and drying duration had significant effects on the chemical composition and biological activity of A. officinalis extract. A. officinalis tips dried at 50 °C for 24 h contained the (significantly) highest flavonoid and rutin content. The most potent extract was from A. officinalis spears since it possessed the (significantly) highest MMP-1, elastase, and hyaluronidase inhibition rates of 83.4 ± 1.5%, 70.4 ± 4.1%, and 75.2 ± 1.0%, respectively. Interestingly, at the same concentration, the A. officinalis spear extract was more potent in MMP-1 inhibition than oleanolic acid and epigallocatechin gallate, the well-known natural MMP-1 inhibitors. The results show that A. officinalis extract is an attractive source of natural anti-skin-wrinkle ingredients.

Objective: To assess the antioxidant activity from another part of the plant, in this study, leaf extracts in n-hexane were fractionated.Methods: Ten fractions were obtained and tested in vitro for antioxidant activity using two methods, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferricreducing antioxidant power (FRAP), to identify the most active fraction.Results: The IC50 of the most active fraction was 36.24 μg/mL using the DPPH method, and the EC50 was 39.54 μg/mL using the FRAP method. Themost active fraction was also shown to contain terpenoids.Conclusion: The most active fraction of an n-hexane extract of the leaves of Gacinia bancana Miq., which was tested by both DPPH and FRAP methodshad antioxidant activities with IC50 and EC50 values of 36.2482 μg/mL and 39.5442 μg/mL, respectively. Phytochemical screening showed that activefraction contains terpenoids.

In this study, the influences of temperature (20, 40 and 60 °C) and extraction solvents (water, ethanol) on the ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolics from the Adriatic macroalgae Dictyota dichotoma and Padina pavonica were studied. The extracts were analysed for major phenolic sub-groups (total phenolics, flavonoids and tannins) using spectrometric methods, while the individual phenolics were detected by HPLC. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using three methods: Ferric Reducing/Antioxidant Power (FRAP), scavenging of the stabile 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and Oxygen Radical Antioxidant Capacity (ORAC). The aim of the study was also to find the connection between the chemical composition of the extracts and their biological activity. Therefore, principal component analysis (PCA), which permits simple representation of different sample data and better visualisation of their correlations, was used. Higher extraction yields of the total phenolics, flavonoids and tannins were obtained using an alcoholic solvent, while a general conclusion about the applied temperature was not established. These extracts also showed good antioxidant activity, especially D. dichotoma extracts, with high reducing capacity (690–792 mM TE) and ORAC values (38.7–40.8 mM TE in 400-fold diluted extracts). The PCA pointed out the significant influence of flavonoids and tannins on the investigated properties. The results of this investigation could be interesting for future studies dealing with the application of these two algae in foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

AbstractWe conducted this study to determine and compare the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in the argan and olive leaves as well as their antioxidant capacity in aqueous, methanolic, and ethyl acetate extracted fractions. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated in comparison with synthetic antioxidants by assessing DPPH• radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, scavenging ability by inhibiting the β-carotene/linoleic acid emulsion oxidation, and by the ABTS radical scavenging activity assay. Total phenolic content in argan samples ranged from 221.69 ± 2.07 to 1.32 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g DW and in olive samples from 144.61 ± 0.82 to 1.21 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g DW. Total flavonoids content in argan samples varied from 267.37 ± 1.12 to 25.48 ± 0.02 mg QE/g DW, while in olives from 96.06 ± 0.78 to 10.63 ± 0.05 mg QE/g DW. In vitro antioxidant studies strongly confirmed the antioxidant potency of argan and olive leaves and their richness in secondary metabolites that are effective in free radicals scavenging and metal chelating capacities, indicating their antioxidant power.
