This article explores the relationship between manuscripts of ancient religious literature and aesthetic cognitivism, a normative theory of the value of art. Arguing that manuscripts both contain and constitute works of art, we explore paratextuality as a phenomenon that connects manuscript studies to both qualitative and quantitative sides of aesthetic cognitivism. Focusing on our work with a single unpublished gospel manuscript (Dublin, CBL W 139) in the context of a larger project called Paratextual Understanding, we make that case that paratexts have aesthetic functions that allow them to contribute to the knowledge yielded by the larger literary work of which they are a part. We suggest a number of avenues for further research that engages with material culture, non-typography, paratexts, and the arts.

The focus of this paper is not on theological aspects of the Qur’an, or on the study of the Qur’anic sciences in Southeast Asia over the past centuries, but rather to attempt to trace the path of the appreciation of old copies of the Qur’an in Southeast Asia as part of the historical record of the Islamic heritage of the region. In this light, Qur’an manuscripts are viewed as objects of material culture which can cast light on the societies which produced them, and as works of art which testify to the heights of artistic creativity in the region, for illuminated Qur’an manuscripts represent the pinnacle of achievements in the arts of the book in Southeast Asia. This historical record can be measured through a survey of how, where, when and by whom Qur’an manuscripts in Southeast Asia were collected, documented, studied and published, both in Southeast Asia itself and in the west.

These three volumes invite a volume in return. They bring Haida to the fore of what is known of oral narrative in Native North America. One finds a dedicated philological sleuth, tracking down original texts and unpublished manuscripts (see A story as sharp as a knife, pp. 221–2; Nine visits to the mythworld, p. 17); a historian of anthropology, reconstructing and relating the story of a young fieldworker who is now largely forgotten (John R. Swanton); a pursuit of detail that enters into a past world, identifying in footnotes and photographs the places and foods and material culture of that world; and a creative writer reimagining Haida men, on islands crumbled by disease and occupation, re-creating in narratives a world their minds could still imagine. Not least, one finds someone for whom the arts are a normal part of life, and for whom the conception and misfortunes of a painting by Velasquez (44–49) can illuminate the relationship between myth time and historical time in Haida. Finally, the writing displays an ease, indeed a gift for words, that befits an established poet, and the books themselves are attractive, as befits a typographer versed in visual arts. (Bringhurst was invited to bring out a new edition, Chappell & Bringhurst 1999, of a standard book. The new edition indeed displays two pages [298–99] in line and verse of Victoria Howard's “Gitskux and his older brother” [Clackamas Chinook]; see Hymes 1983. His book of 1992 has been a bestseller.

The article attempts to consider the labor emigration of Ukrainians through the work of Ivan Franko in the historical and economic aspect. The writer 's views and position on the problems of labor emigration of Ukrainians in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are discussed, as well as parallels with modern emigration processes are conducted. Attention is drawn to the description of the methods, means and mechanisms that were used to emigrate Ukrainians, which were covered in the scientific and literary work of Ivan Franko. It also explains the up-front factors that have prompted Ukrainians to emigrate, in particular labor, and attempts to analyze the positive and negative effects of Ukrainian emigration processes in different historical periods through the prism of Ivan Franko work. Also, the relationship between land ownership and Ukrainian emigration abroad is traced. It is emphasized that many questions raised by Ivan Franko have not lost their relevance in the present historical period. Ivan Franko in a number of his publications makes an attempt to understand the reasons for the emigration of the complex - economic, political, domestic, and environmental. In particular, he is one of the first not only among Ukrainian but also European researchers to draw attention to the deterioration of the ecological component and its direct impact on the emigration processes of the population. Also, the ideological and propaganda aspect in the influences on the emigration of Ukrainians. Particularly visible in the works of Ivan Franko, the inability of state and municipal government to quickly influence the process of emigration. The article gives a brief description of the research of this problem in the works of Ivan Franko by Ukrainian scholars. The urgency of this problem has gained a new sound today, as Ukraine received free access to the world labor market, and also found itself at the epicenter of a geopolitical conflict between civilizational warfare, which, in turn, influenced the qualitative and quantitative indicators of emigration.

Summary In this article we present teaching materials based on the concept ‘anchoring innovation’, meant for students in year three of secondary school. The purpose of the materials is to illustrate how ‘anchoring innovation’ worked in Antiquity and to illustrate that these principles are still relevant today. A secondary goal is to give students insight into Classics as an academic discipline. Within the context of the classroom ‘anchoring innovation’ helps students to understand the relationship between different historical events, texts and material culture. In this set of teaching materials we focus on Augustus and his big innovation: the principate. Students will discover how Augustus anchored this political change. After analyzing texts, coins, buildings and works of art, they will present their findings in an infographic. They will find out that Augustus used all types of media to secure his principate. At the same time they will see that Augustus is careful not to use the wrong anchor.

Art Forms in Poetics: On the Relationship between Poetry and Poetics in Niels Lyngsø’s MORFEUS:In Denmark, the genre of poetics has to a high degree developed into poets’ own reflections on their literary work and working process. This turn has resulted in a textual hybridity, restlessly oscillating between essayistic-theoretical orientation and poetic discourse. It has been pointed out that scholars have generally failed to pay attention to the artistic elements of such poetological writings. This is where this article takes its point of departure, probing Danish poet Niels Lyngsø’s abundant, complex and ambitious bastard piece MORFEUS from 2004 – a blend of visual poetry, sonnets, associative lists, essays on literature and the arts and many other forms. Inserted in a slipcase, the large quadratic, unpaged sheets, fastened with metal rings, seem extremely tactile; the reader becomes a percipient, a sensing body. As the poetry and the poetics are inseparably wrapped in each other, the poetic, sensuous perception mode is encouraged to be transferred to the ordinarily content-orientated reading of theoretical reflections. The point is now that this transfer turns out to be fruitful: the poetic function is at times strikingly operative. Passages where this is the case are analysed profoundly and the implications and perspectives of this fusion of poetry and poetics are unfolded.

Is it possible to transform stone into a technological and innovative device? The meeting with one of the main stone transformers in Europe produced the intention of a disruptive operation that could affect the strategy of the whole company. A contagious singularity. By intertwining LEAN methodologies and the human-centric approach of design thinking, we mapped the value creation in the company activating a dialogue with the workers and the management, listening to people, asking for ambitions, discovering problems and the potential of production. This qualitative and quantitative analysis conducted with a multidisciplinary approach by designers, architects and marketing strategists allowed us to define a new method. We used it to design a platform that could let all the players express their potential to the maximum. This is how the group's research laboratory was born, with the aim of promoting the relationship between humans and stone through product innovation. With this goal, we coordinated the new team, developing technologies that would allow creating a more direct relationship between man and surface, making the stone reactive. The result was the first responsive kitchen ever.

The paper discusses Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception as a phenomenology of art. The prevalence of examples from the arts in his text indicates that works of art possess the very same dynamic of reflexivity that the phenomenological project as a whole seeks to develop. Furthermore, by way of confrontation with works of art, the project is driven to transcend itself – or more precisely: to reflect itself. This »new style« of reflexivity may be discussed as »aesthetic incorporation.«

The article proposes a new understanding of historical succession in the realm of art. In contrast to the idea that there is an original work in the series of works that gives meaning to the works that come later, the text proposes to think it exactly the other way round: in the light of later works, the meanings of earlier works are renegotiated. The text proceeds in three steps to develop this idea. Under the heading ›Form‹ it develops in the first part a critical reading of Danto’s and Eco’s notion of the constitution of the artworks and argues with Adorno that each powerful work develops its own language. In the second part, the vagueness of the meaning of works of art presupposed in the idea of renegotiating earlier works in the light of later works is discussed under the term ›Temporality‹ in terms of the logic of improvisation. The third and final part uses this improvisational logic under the label ›Renegotiation‹ to understand the relationship between model and afterimage in the realm of art.
