Party competition in Great Britain increasingly revolves around social or ‘cultural’ issues as much as it does around the economic issues that took centre stage when class was assumed to be dominant. We use data from surveys of members of parliament, party members and voters to explore how this shift has affected the internal coalitions of the Labour and Conservative Parties – and to provide a fresh test of ‘May’s Law’. We find a considerable disconnect between ‘neoliberal’ Conservative members of parliament and their more centrist voters on economic issues and similarly significant disagreement on cultural issues between socially liberal Labour members of parliament and their more authoritarian voters. We also find differences in both parties between parliamentarians and their grassroots members, albeit that these are much less pronounced. May’s Law, not for the first time, appears not to be borne out in reality.

The local media market in Poland developed in very particular social conditions, conditions which Nowak 1979, 1981 described as a “social void”. As a result, it might be presumed that it was more likely that the new forms of society including local media were formed on the basis of the “bonding” type of social capital rather than the “bridging” type. Th is might be one of the reasons why tight and complex relationships between the local media and other social actors still exist. On the basis of my own qualitative research case studies conducted in four small towns in Poland, this article shows how complex the local relations are and describes the involvement of local journalists and local media owners in these networks of relations which might often be a cause of conflicts of interest individual or institutional or media bias.

Contemporary built environments experience a vast number of factors due to globalization, which effected and influenced how the built form is generated and used. The relationship between the urban and the building levels is a crucial aspect that needs a thorough investigation to understand how these two levels can integrate and complement the built environment's overall identity. This paper examines the concept of access and its location within the urban fabric and how an access influenced the formation of physical and nonphysical threshold spaces to overcome the number of socio-cultural issues. Space Syntax convex map and justified access graphs were used to understand the connectivity, density, and integration of the access and the threshold space in relation to the overall built form.

Is architecture relevant for political theory? That is the key question that structures this excellent collection Political Theory and Architecture, although a number of essays fit a broader formulated theme better, namely, concerning the political relevance of the organization and design of our built environment more generally, including architecture but also spatial planning and urban design. The collection demonstrates that our build environment is not merely a passive backdrop to a political community, but actively shapes aspects of our common political life. This constitutive nature of our built environment figures in many different guises throughout this volume. In this review article, I discuss some of these and conclude that concerns about the ‘common good’ and hence about the discipline of political theory should take reflections on urban design, planning, and architecture into account.
