Reviewing the last decade of Chinese-language scholarship on the 1911 Revolution, this article suggests that we should view the Revolution in richer ways, rather than simply focusing on the political event on 10 October 1911. By contextualizing the revolution in its world, this article argues that it is necessary to view 1911 in its own terms and in global perspective in order to articulate historical continuities and discontinuities beyond 1911. How did, does, and will the spirit of modern revolution function and reshape the mental landscape in China’s past, present, and future? The revolution is considered here to be not only a transhistorical source of transformation but also part of the restructuring of social life and ideals. Revolution has become the ontological ground of China’s modern society. The meaning of the spirit of revolution lay in providing the Chinese people with a space of hope, where they could transcend current disappointment and discontent, and pursue political, economic, and cultural visions to fundamentally change their world. For individuals, revolution offered a means of meeting personal needs; for the nation, the revolution has meant the unending pursuit of ‘standing up, enriching up, and strengthening up’.

The problems of cultural and civilizational transition and the anthropological catastrophe, predicted by leading scientists and thinkers, are now becoming much more acute and clear. The events unfolding before our eyes in the socio-cultural, political, economic and even biological life of modern society testify to a deep systemic crisis of modern civilization. In this regard, attempts at analytical comprehension of the crisis state of culture, identifying cause-and-effect relationships that have led to this state, as well as the experience of anti-crisis modeling and searching possible ways to overcome the crisis seem to be in demand and relevant. This work, relying on the culturological approach and using the method of culturological hermeneutics, presents the experience of theoretical fixation of the types of responses to the crisis state of culture common for transition periods, the semantic content of which can be determined in three main ways: 1) inversion mechanisms, where human consciousness tends to transfer ready-made, well-known cultural models to the new cultural ground; 2) mediation mechanisms, implying human acceptance of transforming reality; 3) eristic principle — a situation of semantic pluralism up to the shift of value poles.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine how the official discourse of frugality evolved in China between 1979 and 2015.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses historical and textual analysis. It divides the Chinese official discourse on frugality between 1979 and 2015 into four periods: 1979-1992, 1993-2002, 2003-2012 and 2013-2015.FindingsA Chinese official discourse on frugality persisted between 1979 and 2015, even though during the same period, China transformed from a socialist economy of central planning and insufficient supply to a market economy of excessive supply and weak consumer demand. The intensity of this official discourse frequently vacillated, adjusting to both economic and political conditions of the time as part of the larger political-economic contestation between competing ideas and policies.Originality/valueThere have been calls for more studies on how frugality discourses have evolved in international markets, especially in terms of how they are shaped by local historical antecedents and long-standing tensions. Through the Chinese case, this article illuminates why some traditional values persist and obtain a paradoxical co-existence with consumerist ethos in our modern society.

Kuwait, a small city-state on the Persian–Arabian Gulf, has undergone massive political, economic, and social development throughout the 20th century. In spite of this, Kuwaiti rulers continue to cherish what is perhaps an impossible dream: that Kuwait can be simultaneously a “developed” country and a “traditional” tribally organized social formation run by an autocratic ruler. This dream is echoed in equally ambivalent pronouncements and policies regarding women, not only by representatives of the state but also by Kuwaiti citizens. Should Kuwaiti women stand side by side with men in public life as half of a modern society, or should they be secluded, subjected by, and submissive to the men in their lives as local “tradition” demands? In this essay I argue that these two ambivalences are linked. Democratization of Kuwaiti political life has proceeded in fits and starts that parallel the uneven progress of democratization of gender relations in Kuwait. Perhaps in consequence, the politics of both kinds of democratization have become more closely linked.

AbstractAdvertising is one of the most important things in supporting the success of the goods or services offered to the public. Television advertisements are one of the advertisements that are often seen by the public because of the excess audio visual effects. In modern society, there are hardly any people who are not preoccupied with advertising activities. This can help us to realize and understand how important it is to have an institution or institution that integrates all the components and mechanics involved in advertising. Because, advertising is used by everyone, not only by the users of consumer goods, but in essence related to the mass information system in the political, economic, social, cultural and technological fields. Each other interacts using the information system referred to and spread all the problems associated with the system, including religious issues. From this description, what synopsis of Tokopedia "Resign" ads will be explored. This research shows that Tokopedia advertisement is considered not effective enough to convey a message even though this advertisement is quite entertaining for some people. But the message conveyed was blurred because so many meanings could be created from the short 30 second ad. But at least this advertisement can still fulfill the function as brand awareness. Keywords: Advertising, Synopsis, Marketing, Marketing Communication.

Contemporary educational processes have to be in tune with the increasing global tendencies. All the world countries strive to unite under the umbrella term “global village”, which implies interconnected and almost unified political, economic, cultural, juridical and even educational spheres of life.  Special grave challenges are faced by contemporary post-Soviet countries. They have to undergo the post-communist era, to struggle for the survival via radical correctional policy and to interweave globally oriented as well as capitalistically oriented strategies. The greatest challenge is posed to the educational sphere. Many post-Soviet higher educational institutions strive to join the European Higher Education Area. The given institutions try to interflow for the genuine overcoming of the existed “insurmountable” barriers. They consolidate collaboration and cooperation on different research and educational programs. Many newly-created joint projects appear and “play a key role in creating the rightful architecture of modern society. A central point in this process is the enquiry to identify… most urgent problems in national educational systems”(Pourtskhvanidze, 2016), to determine the strategies of functioning in multilingual society and to create a universal educational model of post-communist area via finding a balance between national and worldly. The given paper presents innovative university projects, which belong to two different worlds: the highly developed capitalistic world (Italian international project “Linguaggi e attività Produttive”) and post-Soviet “capitalistically-directed” space (Georgian-Ukrainian “DIMTEGU”). “Linguaggi e attività Produttive” and “DIMTEGU” have different nature and individual ways of development. However, both of them present innovative mechanisms of the preservation of multiculturalism and plurilingualism. The promotion of multiculturalism, facilitation of the preservation of plurilingualism, introduction of multilingual teacher education, development of appropriate curricula and teaching materials, suggestion of the fruitful ways of the adaptation to the global challenges  – these are the major issues of our paper and crucial problems of today’s educational world.

Palabras claveLuhmann, teoría, sistema, subsistema, diferenciaciónAbstract The original and hardly classifiable German sociologist Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) elaborated an ambitious and coherent theory which describes modern society as a system.
