Abstract: Jatropha Leaves, Staphylococcus Epidermidis, Staphylococcus Aureus. Jatropha curcas L leaves contain tannins, saponins and flavonoids. According to some studies, tannins, saponins and flavonoids have antibacterial power. Based on these indications, it is important to do research on antibacterial potency of jatropha leaf extract (Jatropha curcas L) against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The aim of this research is to know Antibacterial Activity of Jatropha curcas L Extract on Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus". This research. An experimental study by testing the antibacterial activity of leaf extract and jatropha result of maceration, infundation and reflux as measured by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (KHM) on growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. From the results of the research, it was found that the extract of the reflux was brownish green and the characteristic of jatropha leaves. The amount of extract produced was 17.03 g, so the yield was 17.03%. Jatropha leaf extract of maceration has no inhibitory power to S. epidermidis in 4 series concentrations starting from 3.125 ppm to 25.000 ppm. Inhibitory zones begin to appear at concentrations of 50,000 ppm and increase at concentrations of 100,000 ppm. The drag zone diameter in the Jatropha curcas extract of the reflux showed the inhibitory power in all series of concentrations. The smallest inhibitory zone was shown at a concentration of 3,125 ppm (9.33 mm) and increased with increasing concentrations. The diameter of the inhibit zone was greatest at 100,000 ppm concentrations of 22.67 mm. Description of inhibitory zone diameter of methanol leaf extract of jatropha result of maceration and reflux to S. epidermidis. The conclusion of this research is extract of reflux result giving bigger resistance than maceration extract to S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Methanol extract of jatropha from the maceration and reflux have strong antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis and S. aureus but still under Klindamycin.

We examined the in vitro sensitivities of three bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, commonly detected in acne lesions, and Staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of skin infections, to 10 Kampo formulations (Chinese herbal medicines; combinations of powdered extracts of crude drugs). Both Staphylococcus species showed similar sensitivities to all 10 formulations, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 25 to 400 mg/ml. P. acnes, however, was particularly sensitive to one formulation, keigai-rengyo-to (MIC, 0.78 – 25 mg/ml), prompting speculation that it might contain components with strong antibacterial activity to P. acnes. P. acnes showed similar sensitivities to all the other formulations (MIC 6.25 – 200 mg/ml). The ranges of MICs and the MIC50s (concentrations that inhibit 50% of isolates) were very similar to those previously recorded in 1990 for the two Staphylococcus species.

The content of secondary metabolites in the rhizome of the Curcuma genus such as Black turmeric (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb.), White turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe) and Java turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) play a role in various pharmacological activities. One of them is the content of the curcuminoid compounds which have been proved to have antibacterial activity. This study aims to screen the content of secondary metabolite compounds, determine curcuminoid content and verify the antibacterial activity of the extracts of Black turmeric (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb.), White turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe) and Java turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.). Extraction was carried out by the maceration method using 95% ethanol as solvent. Phytochemical screening was tested for the content of alkaloid, polyphenols, flavonoids, quinones, tannins, saponins, and steroids/ triterpenoids compounds. Determination of curcuminoid content by UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method. The antibacterial activity test was carried out by the microdilution method against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acne bacteria. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the three extracts contained polyphenols and flavonoids. Quinone compounds are only contained in the extract of Black turmeric and Java turmeric. Saponin compounds were only detected in Black turmeric and White turmeric  extracts. Meanwhile, steroid/ triterpenoid compounds were detected in the extract of White turmeric and Java turmeric. The results of curcuminoid content determination on the three extracts showed that the Java turmeric extract had the highest content of curcuminoids (16.07 ± 0.023 mg CE/g extract). The results of the antibacterial test showed the strongest activity of the three test samples shown by Java turmeric extract with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 64 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria; 256 mg/mL against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria; and 32 mg/mL against the Propionibacterium acne bacteria. These results indicate that Java turmeric extract is more active against Propionibacterium acne bacteria.
