This chapter looks at the ambitious reform agenda that black middle-class activist residents went on to mount in these outlying city neighbourhoods, encompassing housing upkeep, business revitalization, traffic safety, trash removal, and efforts to reduce liquor availability, juvenile delinquency, vice, and crime – all in an attempt to maintain what they considered an acceptable quality of life. Perhaps the most ambitious effort along these lines was a venture in which a group of African American investors purchased and renovated the Lee-Harvard Shopping Center, making it during its existence from 1972-1978 the “largest black-owned commercial complex in the nation.” Sometimes these reform efforts involved moralizing or exhibited an explicit class bias; upwardly mobile middle-class blacks did not always recognize that less well-off newcomers were motivated by similar concerns with liveability. In the end, however, their various attempts to take charge of their lives and communities contributed to the long-term vitality of these neighbourhoods and the city as a whole.

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to determine in-hospital mortality in patients presenting with acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and to evaluate for any differences in outcome according to gender. Methods: Patients with SRS-CoV-2 infection were recruited into this retrospective cohort study between February 26 and September 8, 2020 and strаtified ассоrding tо the gender. Results: In tоtаl оf 3360 раtients (meаn аge 44 ± 17 years) were included, of whom 2221 (66%) were mаle. The average length of hospitalization was 13 days (range: 2–31 days). During hospitalization and follow-up 176 patients (5.24%) died. Mortality rates were significantly different according to gender (p=<0.001). Specifically, male gender was associated with significantly greater mortality when compared to female gender with results significant at an alpha of 0.05, LL = 28.67, df = 1, p = 0.001, suggesting that gender could reliably determine mortality rates. The coefficient for the males was significant, B = 1.02, SE = 0.21, HR = 2.78, p< .001, indicating that an observation in the male category will have a hazard 2.78 times greater than that in the female category. Multivariate logistic regression confirmed male patients admitted with SARS-CoV-2had higher сumulаtive аll-саuse in-hоsрitаl mоrtаlity (6.8% vs. 2.3%; аdjusted оdds rаtiо (аОR), 2.80; 95% (СI): [1.61 - 5.03]; р < 0.001). Conclusions: Male gender was an independent predictor of in-hospital death in this study. The mortality rate among male SARS-CoV-2 patients was 2.8 times higher when compared with females.

Aim. To analyze the structure, organization and effectiveness of outpatient medical care for patients with blood diseases in St. Petersburg, Russia. Methods. 83 reports submitted by the heads of hematological offices at 2000-2012 were analyzed. The effectiveness was evaluated using routine statistical tests. The prevalence of the diseases was assessed by registration forms №7, 35, the data provided by information and analytical center of the Healthcare Committee and the City cancer registry. Medical aid provided to patients at 2010-2012 was studied, for this purpose 250 outpatient files (025/y form) were randomly picked out, the data were collected using specially designed registration cards (254 parameters). Results. Municipal, federal and departmental institutions provide hematologic outpatient medical care in St. Petersburg. The major burden of providing medical care to hematologic patients lays on interdistrict hematological offices, which actively follow-up and treat patients with hematologic cancers. Every sixth patient has complications, and 75% - comorbidities. During the period of study, the attendance rate increased by 33.4% (from 64 766 in 2000 to 86 405 in 2012), the number of the newly-diagnosed patients with hematologic cancers increased by 13.9% (p 0.05), the share of patients with hematologic cancers increased from 28.0 to 50.4%. Cumulative incidence of lymphomas increased from 69.9 to 96.0 per 100 thousand of population; leukemia - from 49.7 to 79.3. Mortality due to lymphomas decreased from 8.1% in 2001 to 5.3% in 2012, and due to leukemia - from 9.2% to 3.6%. Five-year survival rate of patients with leukemia increased from 56.6% to 63.2 % over the period of 2010-2012. Conclusion. The study shows the effectiveness of outpatient hematologic care in St. Petersburg. To further improve the efficiency of outpatient hematologic care in metropolis, it is important to improve the knowledge of hematologic diseases by doctors and pediatricians of general healthcare network, to review the workload of hematological office staff, to focus on preventive component of hematologic care (quality of occupational medical examinations), to develop and implement the new organizational techniques providing costs reduction and improving quality of life.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a minimal dynamic two-dimensional map for the relation between citizens’ perception of quality of life (y) and their perception of the city Mayor management abilities (F). Design/methodology/approach – The authors use data from the Ciudades cómo vamos? project and test a simple hypothesis: there is a linear positive correlation between y and F. Following the authors propose a two-dimensional map based on ideas from a statistical regression model and a non-linear dynamical map on the [0; 1] interval. Findings – The authors give evidence that suggests that y and F are not linearly correlated. The authors show that the two-dimensional map, mentioned above, is able to reproduce non-trivial and unsynchronized relations between the variables, as well as the whole range of correlation coefficients. Research limitations/implications – There is a very limited amount of data to work with, therefore it was not possible to explore other possible relations thoroughly. Regarding the dynamical map, the authors are aware that there are still many venues for its study. Originality/value – To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported attempt at modeling the dynamics between two variables obtained via survey on which perception is a key component of the questions.
