Subcutaneous emphysema is described as an uncommon complication resulting from the passage of compressed air to the fascial planes and is associated, in dentistry, with restorative, endodontic treatments, periodontal surgery and extractions, the latter with a higher incidence. Early diagnosis, appropriate approach and ordering of imaging tests prevent secondary complications, such as local infection and progression to deep cervical and thoracic fascial spaces. Thus, the present clinical case reports the transoperative occurrence of subcutaneous emphysema during extraction of the lower third molar, its indicated treatment and how we can avoid this type of complication

Objective:Acinic cell carcinoma (CCA) is the third malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands in adults; low-grade tumor of malignancy, composed of neoplastic cells with serous acinar differentiation. The objective of this work was to analyze 12 cases of CCA according to their location, clinical characteristics, histological and immunohistochemical pattern and cell types, following the latest classification of the World Health Organization. Methods: The study included 12 cases of CCA from the files of salivary tumor biopsies of our work team, corresponding to the period 1997-2020. A numerical code was used to identify the samples, preserving the identity of the patients. Histological sections of the paraffin-embedded biopsies were evaluated with H/E, PAS and Toluidine blue and immunostained with the monoclonal antibodies pancytokeratin AE1 / AE3, Ki67, MUC-1 and mammaglobin. Results: The most frequent histologic pattern was the solid type as a single pattern or integrated with other patterns of lesser development, with almost exclusive location in the parotid gland and more frequent in women. Cells like normal acinar serocytes predominated in the solid growth pattern. The most frequent cell type in the microcystic patternwas the nonspecific glandular cell together with a lower proportion of acinar and intercalated duct-like cells. The papillary-cystic pattern was lined by nonspecific glandular cells. No clear cells found. With Ki67 a low cell proliferation was demonstrated in all the cases studied. Cell labeling for MUC-1 was grade 1 positive (less than 10% immunoreactive cells) and negative for mammaglobin. Conclusions: Patient follow-up is a priority because CCA tends to recur and metastasize and its behavior can become aggressive. We must deepen the study of its proliferative capacity as a treatment and prognosis tool, especially with immunohistochemistry and standardized molecular biology methods.

University Extension at the Faculty of Dentistry of the National University of Cordoba has gone through a long process of conceptions, tensions and evolutionary changes with the aim of gradually accompanying the current extension paradigms. Various conceptions have been adapted during this process, giving rise to several significant changes in an attempt to give hierarchy to this pillar of the public university in line with the genuine needs of the community. However, there are still some challenges for the future, for which the participation of its teachers and students will be very important, not only in their permanent education and training, but also in the substantiation of renewed interdisciplinary projects, more and more committed to the social collective.

Introduction: The teaching of pharmacology has traditionally been characterized by the transmission of information where pedagogical strategies have focused on the teacher, privileging theoretical knowledge, master classes and memory tests. It isessentialto introduce new elements to increase the student's active participation in the construction of knowledge and in the evaluation of the achievement of their competences; the development of creativity and teamwork. This methodology seeks to break the notionof traditional teaching, change the idea of an evaluation by the note to an evaluation with a motivation of its own (of the student), to internalize the knowledge and make it part of its structure of thought. Objective: Develop a teaching and evaluation strategy that allows students to actively participate. Materials and methods: 172 students participated in the subject of Pharmacology and Therapeutics "B", between March and September 2017. Four individual and complementary activities were developed related to the prescription of drugs, for the evaluation of the process and performance of the students Standardized rubrics were used, a perception survey was applied to the students about the usefulness of the strategy in theirtraining. Results: The results show a good performance of the students in the prescription activities of medications, a significant improvement in the performance when comparing the results. The students consider that the strategy is useful for the development of their professional competences, it allows them to have an active role in the learning process and the evaluation methodology allows them to recognize the elements that they must reinforce in order to reach an optimal development of their competence

Dental caries is one of the most common oral health problems that mainly affects children and young people of school age, altering the general health and quality of life of people, thus becoming a public health problem. Objective: The aim of this study was to obtain the incidence of bad oral hygiene related to mood in 12-year-old school children in the parish of San Sebastián, Cuenca-Ecuador. Methods: For this study, a quantitative approach was used, from a descriptive study, where 281 twelve-year-old school children were analyzed. Results: By means of the Kendall analysis method applied to the CPOD and mood limitation variables, the results were 0.987 in the female gender and 0.304 in the male gender. Conclusion: No relation between CPOD level and mood was found

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of carboplatin (Cp) on submandibular gland homogenate of Wistar rats through the determination of malondialdehyde levels, as the main end product of lipoperoxidation, in an experimental model.Sixteen three-month-old male Wistar rats were used, housed in individual cages, with controlled temperature and lighting and free diet. A completely randomized design was used and two experimental groups were established: 1) Control (C), administering an intraperitoneal dose of saline solution for one day, n: 8, 2) Animals treated with carboplatin (Cp) applying a dose i.p. of 100 mg / Kg of body weight for one day, n: 8. The animals were fasted for 24 hours and subsequently anesthetized. Then both submandibular glands were removed. Malondialdehyde levels were analyzed in submandibular gland homogenatein both experimental groups. Variations between the groups analyzed were evaluated using the Student's t test for paired samples, setting a p-value <0.05 for statistical significance. Project approved by CICUAL. Faculty of Medical Sciences (UNC).The group of Rats Co showed a concentration of 7.32± 0.48μmol / mg of gland. The Cp group had a concentration of 12.57 ± 0.71 μmol / mg of gland, expressing a significant decrease compared to the control group p <0.0006. Cp at the dose tested would cause a decrease in lipoperoxidation in the submandibular gland of rats. Possibly the glandular antioxidant battery would neutralize the oxidative stress of acinar cells. These results suggest a future evaluation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and uric acid (UA) levels

In recent years, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have become the cornerstone of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. MSCs can be easily obtained from adult tissues, it is in this area that obtaining and using oral MSCs have become a good source of experimentation. It is not unknown that MSCs have great regenerative power, high proliferative and differentiation capacity and high osteogenic potential. However, they can be affected by multiple external factors. The objective of this article is to describe the effect of tobacco on oral MSCs. Cigarettes and its components are a risk factor for various diseases at the level of the oral cavity, they have many adverse effects on the cellular biology of the mouth, therefore, it is not strange to think about the effect that these components can have on MSCs. of oral origin. The latest studies have shown that nicotine and condensed cigarette smoke have negative biological effects on MSCs, particularly oral ones. Despite the existing literature, it is not entirely clear what are the mechanisms involved in the negative effects of tobacco on oral MSCs and how they could be reversed.
