The study investigated the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation on pupils’ academic performance in mathematics. Based on the purpose of the study two hypotheses guided the study. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all 3056 primary six pupils in Owerri Education zone of Imo State.  A Sample size of 200 primary six pupils was selected for the study.   Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting four schools out of the nine schools. The instruments used for data collection was Academic Motivation Scale and Mathematics Achievement Test. The validity was determined by two experts in measurement and evaluation and one expert in mathematics education. The instruments have reliability coefficient of 0.89 and 0.92 determined using tests-retest method. Data generated were analyzed with the aid SPSS version.  Inferential statistics of t-test and Pearson product moment correlation were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study concludes that motivation improves academic performance of the pupils and there is a gender difference in motivation type and academic performance.

The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between learning engagement, academic motivation, and academic performance in undergraduate students and the importance of religion in determining the academic motivation and academic performance. A sample of 840 university students from different regions (provinces) of Pakistan is pooled through a convenient sampling technique. Engagement Versus Disaffection (EVD) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) are administered for learning engagement and academic motivation, respectively. After applying analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression, the findings of this research reveal that learning engagement and academic motivation have significant relationships with academic performance. Furthermore, it is also found that, in religiosity, academic motivation for both Muslims and non-Muslims do not induce learning engagement, but Muslim students have shown better academic performance than non-Muslims. This study can be beneficial for policymakers and practitioners to analyze the determinants of learning engagements and improve the academic performance of university students.

The study investigated the perception of undergraduate education students at Federal University Oye Ekiti, Nigeria towards teaching profession. Descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted for the study. An instrument adapted from Alkhateeb (2013) and tagged Students’ Attitude on Teaching Profession (SATPQ) was used to obtain data for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample comprising of 187 undergraduate education students at100 and 200 level. One research question was raised while four research hypotheses were generated for the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The outcome of the study revealed that undergraduate education students at the Federal University Oye Ekiti had positive attitude towards teaching profession. The study revealed that there was no significant difference in the perception of undergraduate education students at the Federal University Oye Ekiti towards teaching profession based on gender, level of entry, age and entry qualification. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended that undergraduate education students should be provided with necessary incentive to sustain their positive perception towards teaching profession while government should formulate a policy that could change societal perception on teaching profession.

The study examined the contribution of bureaucratic theory to workers’ productivity improvement in Nigerian universities. A descriptive research design of the survey type was used for the study. A sample of 10 universities in the south west Nigeria – five state-owned and five federal-owned – using simple random sampling technique was selected. Also, simple random sampling was used to select 20 respondents including academic and non-academic staff (senior staff) amounting to 200 respondents. The study developed and used a questionnaire titled: “Bureaucratic Principles and Workers’ Productivity Questionnaire (BPWQ)” with a reliability correlation coefficient (r) of 0.90. Multiple regression analysis was employed to analyse the data, while the null hypotheses developed for the study were tested at .05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was significant composite influence of bureaucratic principles on workers’ productivity improvement in Nigerian universities. Also, there was significant influence of division of labour and specialization, hierarchy of authority, stipulated rules and regulation, records, impersonal orientation, and employment and promotion of staff based on technical competence on workers’ productivity improvement in Nigerian universities. It is therefore recommended among others that skilful and qualified workers should be employed at every level in Nigerian universities, their appointments and promotions should be based on merit and competence as established by bureaucratic principles.

RESUMENNo se puede negar el incremento en los diez últimos años de investigaciones y publicaciones centradas en la Competencia Socioemocional. En concreto, este estudio aborda uno de los procesos que, según Goleman (1996), forma parte del constructo Inteligencia Emocional: la motivación. Numerosos estudios tratan su relación con el rendimiento y el fracaso escolar (González, Mendiri y Arias, 2002; Brier, 2006). El aumento de los índices de desmotivación en las aulas, unido a un rendimiento académico cada vez menor en algunos grupos de alumnos —a los que se unen aspectos y situaciones familiares disfuncionales—, justifica este estudio acerca de uno de los factores que más incidencia puede tener en los alumnos y sobre el que se puede intervenir: se trata de las características de los profesores que son percibidas como motivadoras por sus alumnos. En concreto, el estudio aborda el análisis de las diferencias en función de los diferentes cursos, el sexo y los factores de motivación según la Escala de Motivación Académica (EMA, Manassero y Vázquez, 1997, 1998). Para ello, se presentan los primeros hallazgos de un estudio, con una muestra incidental de 350 alumnos de ESO, pertenecientes a dos colegios concertados de diferentes áreas de Madrid. El trabajo concluye con algunas pautas de intervención para los profesores, que se consideran recomendables en la actuación en las aulas.ABSTRACTIt can’t be denied that, in the last ten years, research and publications focusing on Social and Emotional Competencies is increasing. This study addresses one of the processes, which according to Goleman (1996), is part of the Emotional Intelligence construct: motivation. Numerous studies deal with its relationship with performance and school failure (Gonzalez, Mendiri and Arias, 2002; Brier, 2006). The increased rates of demotivation in the classroom, coupled with an increasingly lower academic performance in some groups of pupils, together with dysfunctional family situations, justify this study about one of the factors with more impact on students: the characteristics of teachers who are perceived as motivating by the students. Specifically, in this paper, the differences taking into account the courses, the sex and the motivational factors according to the Academic Motivation Scale (EMA, Manassero and Vazquez, 1997, 1998) will be analyze. For this propose, the first findings of a study, with an incidental sample of 350 students from two schools in different areas of Madrid, will be presented. The paper concludes with some recommended guidelines for intervention for teachers in the classroom.

Most patients with Cancer cannot adapt to their disease because they assume that it is a deadly disease. The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between family support and adaptability of patients suffered from Cancer found at Yayasan Kanker Indonesia (Indonesian Cancer Foundation) located in East Java. This analytic study using cross sectional design involved the population of all people with Cancer found at Yayasan Kanker Indonesia located in East Java, totaling 30 patients. The samples of 27 patents were collected using simple random sampling technique. The independent variable was family support, whereas the dependent variable was adaptability. Questionnaires were used to collect the data analyzed using Mann-Whitney test with the level of significance α = 0.05. The result of study showed that most of the patients (70.4%) received good family support, whereas most of them (63.0%) had ability to adapt to their disease. Moreover, the result of Mann-Whitney test showed that p = 0.001 and the level of significance α = 0.05 so that H1 was accepted because p < 0.05. It showed that there was a correlation between family support and adaptability of patients suffered from Cancer found at Yayasan Kanker Indonesia located in East Java.The more family support, the more adaptive the patients with Cancer adapt to their disease. Hence, nurses are expected to give health education about the importance of family support to the family of patients with Cancer.

ICT has permeated all spheres of human endeavours in this 21st century of information-driven society, education sector inclusive. Consequence upon this development, teachers as stakeholders are not left behind in the aspect of training and retraining to acquire relevant skills in the usage of ICT in order to be ICT-compliant and use same in their teaching methodologies. This paper, therefore, examined ICT competency of serving teachers for quality instructional service delivery in Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, Bauchi State, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design as questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection from the sampled serving teachers. The questionnaire used for this research was structured on three components of ICT: Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation, Internet Usage and Usage of projector/interactive multimedia board. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw sample of 196 from the population of entire academics totally 436 currently serving in the area of the study using sample size table provided by Research Advisor. The instrument used for the study was validated by the specialists in the fields of Computer Science and Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability index of the instrument yielded 0.82 using Crobanch alpha reliability technique. The results revealed that academics have skills in the usage of Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation for effective instructional service delivery. Besides, it was found out that the serving teachers possess technical-know-how in Internet usage for gathering materials for their lessons, but lack skills on how to operate projector/interactive multimedia board for their lectures. It was also discovered that age, gender and years of experience had significant influence on the level of ICT skills acquisition and usage of serving teachers. However, there was no association between educational qualification of serving teachers and their level of ICT skills acquisition. The study recommends that Bauchi state government, in conjunction with College authority, should organize seminar on how to use and operate projector as well as interactive multimedia board for quality instructional service delivery by the lecturers.

The poor performance of candidates in external examination between 2014 and 2018 could be an indication of low productivity of teachers. The research study examined the influence of working conditions and salary on teachers’ productivity in government owned secondary schools in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The descriptive research of the survey type was employed for the research study. The population for this research study was seven government-owned secondary schools while the sample was four government-owned secondary schools. The research study found out the relationship between working conditions and teachers’ productivity; salary and teachers’ productivity in government-owned secondary schools in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. Validated instruments tagged, “Working Conditions and Salary Questionnaire” (WCSQ) and “Teachers’ Productivity Questionnaire” (TPQ) were used to collect data from sample of 80 respondents. Simple random sampling technique was used to select four secondary schools while, proportional sampling technique was used to select 80 teachers. The research study revealed that there was significant relationship between working conditions and teachers’ productivity; salary and teachers’ productivity. This research study has shown that working conditions and salary had influence on teachers’ productivity.

Background: This study examined the relationship of academic performance with the Big Five traits of personality, academic motivation, and gender in a cross-cultural context. Methods: Participants in the study were 424 university students of physical education (PE) departments from Poland (53%) and Ukraine (47%). Undergraduates completed a brief version of the International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP) to assess the Five-Factor model of personality, the Academic Motivations Scale (AMS), and grade point average (GPA). Results: Polish PE students scored higher in emotional stability and extroversion and had a higher GPA than Ukrainian PE undergraduates. Gender differences were found in both personality traits and academic motivation scales. Intrinsic motivation may predict academic performance. Conscientiousness and intellect emerged as mediators of the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance and gender was found as a moderator in the relationship between conscientiousness and academic success. Conclusions: Women are more motivated regarding academic achievements than men. In addition to intrinsic motivation, the most important factors for academic grades are some personality traits, gender, and cultural differences. Openness and conscientiousness in men are mediators between intrinsic motivation and academic performance. The results of this study may be useful for PE academic teachers to improve the motivation of their students.

This study aims finding out whether there is a correlation between (1) students’ reading habit and translation ability; (2) students’ vocabulary mastery and translation ability; and (3) students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery toward translation ability. The study is conducted from May to June 2013 at English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University, and the population is all of sixth semester students. The sample is 34 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The method used in this study is descriptive research method, with category of correlational study. The instruments in collecting the data are questionnaire and test. The techniques which are used to analyze the data are Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation. The result of the data analysis shows that in the level of significance a = 0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ reading habit and translation ability (r-./ = 0.448 &gt; rt  = 0.339) and it is about 20.07%; (2) there is a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and translation ability (r-0/ = 0.467 &gt; rt = 0.339) and it is about 21.81%; and (3) there is positive correlation between students’ reading habit, vocabulary mastery, and translation ability (R/.0 = 0.24 and Fo = 6.26 &gt; Ft = 3.32) and it is about 28.76%.

This project used a nonexperimental design with a convenience sample and studied the relationship between academic motivation, grade expectation, and academic performance in 1,210 students enrolled in undergraduate human anatomy and physiology (HAP) classes over a 2-yr period. A 42-item survey that included 28 items of the adapted academic motivation scale for HAP based on self-determination theory was administered in class during the first 3 wk of each semester. Students with higher grade point averages, who studied for longer hours and reported to be more motivated to succeed, did better academically in these classes. There was a significant relationship between students' scores on the adapted academic motivation scale and performance. Students were more extrinsically motivated to succeed in HAP courses than intrinsically motivated to succeed, and the analyses revealed that the most significant predictor of final grade was within the extrinsic scale (introjected and external types). Students' motivations remained stable throughout the course sequence. The data showed a significant relationship between HAP students' expected grade and their final grade in class. Finally, 65.5% of students overestimated their final grade, with 29% of students overestimating by two to four letter grades.
