Abstrak: Asap rokok mengandung tiga komponen toksik utama, yaitu karbonmonoksida, nikotin, dan tar yang dapat menyebabkan gangguan pada spermatogenesis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh paparan asap rokok kretek terhadap kualitas spermatozoa mencit. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental dengan rancangan acak lengkap. Subyek penelitian sebanyak 25 ekor mencit jantan (Mus musculus) yang dibagi secara acak menjadi 5 kelompok: kelompok P0 tidak diberikan paparan asap rokok, kelompok P1 diberikan paparan asap rokok kretek 1 batang, kelompok P2 diberikan paparan asap rokok kretek 2 batang, kelompok P3 diberikan paparan asap rokok kretek 3 batang, kelompok P4 diberikan paparan asap rokok kretek 4 batang. Perlakuan diberikan selama 30 hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang signifikan pada konsentrasi dan motilitas spermatozoa kelompok yang mendapatkan paparan asap rokok kretek (p<0,05) dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Morfologi spermatozoa kelompok P2,P3,P4 didapati hasil yang berbeda signifikan dengan kelompok kontrol (p<0,05) tetapi kelompok P1 hasilnya berbeda tak signifikan dengan kelompok kontrol. Paparan asap rokok kretek memberikan pengaruh negatif terhadap kualitas spermatozoa yang disebabkan oleh adanya radikal bebas yang dihasilkan oleh asap rokok. Kata Kunci: asap rokok, kualitas spermatozoa.     Abstract: Cigarette smoke contains three main toxic components, namely carbon monoxide, nicotine, and tar that can cause disturbances in spermatogenesis. The objective of this study was to investigate and observe the effect of cigarette smoke exposure on the quality of spermatozoa of mice. The study was a completely randomized experimental design. The research subject as many as 25 male mice who were randomly divided into 5 groups: group P0 not given exposure, the P1 is given exposure to smoke from 1 bar of cigarette, the P2 is given exposure to smoke from 2 bars of cigarette, the P3 is given exposure to smoke from 3 bars of cigarette and finally the P4 is given exposure to smoke from 4 bars of cigarette. The treatment is given for 30 days. At the end of experiment, results showed a significant difference in the concentration and motility of spermatozoa between the groups exposed to cigarette smoke (p<0,05) compared with the control group. The morphology of spermatozoa group P2,P3,P4, was found substantially different with the control group (p<0,05) but group P1 did not have significant difference in results with the control group. The exposure to cigarette smoke negatively affects sperm quality caused by the free radicals generated by the smoke. Key Word: cigarette smoke, sperm quality.

Introduction: This research aims to investigate and observe the effect of cigarette smoke exposure in the fetal growth and fetal development of mice (Mus musculus).  Methods: This was an experiment with post-test only control group design. The sample of the research was 36 pregnant mice which were randomly divided into 2 groups: control group (K) pregnant mice which inhaled ambient air without cigarette smoke exposure, and treatment group (P) pregnant mice which were given cigarette smoke exposure for 14 days with 2 bars of cigarette each day.  Results: The results showed a significant difference in the fetal birth weight between the group exposed to cigarette smoke (p < 0.05) compared with the control group. Fetal defect and stillbirth were not found in this research. Conclusion: The exposure of cigarette smoke gave negative effects of fetal growth and development because of the free radicals generated.

Background: Infertility has been more common problems among couple of reproductive age. One of the factors causing this disorder is unhealthy environmental factors including exposure to cigarette smoke. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cigarette smoke can cause testicular atrophy, while the free radicals can inhibit the stages of spermatogenesis, and nicotine in cigarettes affects the brain dopamine levels affecting the levels of GnRH, and subsequently affect the levels of FSH and LH needed in spermatogenesis. The use of Mucuna pruriens seed extract containing antioxidants and L-dopa is expected to improve the quality of sperm after exposure to cigarette smoke. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of Mucuna pruriens seed extract on the sperm quality in mice exposed to cigarette smoke. Methods: This study was an experimental study with a post test only control group design. A total of 20 mice were divided into 4 groups of five mice each. All groups were exposed to cigarette smoke. Group 1 was the negative control exposed to cigarette smoke. Groups 2, 3, 4 were exposed to cigarettes smoke and given Mucuna pruriens seed extracts at the dose of 250; 300; and 350 mg/Kg BW/day. Parameters of sperm quality included concentration, morphology, motility and viability. Results: Post hoc tests showed there were significant differences among treatment groups. Conclusion: the administration of Mucuna pruriens seed extract affects the sperm quality of BALB/c mice exposed to cigarettes smoke. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.20(4) 2021 p.768-773

Background: Cigarette smoke exposure is one of the source of free radicals that causes oxidative stress and decreases superoxide dismutase (SOD) level. Purple fleshed sweet potato is a type of food that contains antioxidants to neutralize oxidative stress.Objectives: To study the effect of purple fleshed sweet potato on superoxide dismutase (sod) level on rats exposed to cigarette smoke.Methods: This was a true experimental study with a post-test randomized control group design. The rats were randomized into 4 groups (6 rats in each group). The negative control group (K-) was treated with standard diet; the positive control group (K+) was treated with cigarette smoke exposure and standard diet; the treatment 1 (P1) group was treated with standard diet and purple fleshed sweet potato with the dose of 8 g / 200 g bw/day, and the treatment 2 (P2) group was treated with cigarette smoke exposure and purple fleshed sweet potato with the dose of 8 g /200 g bw/day.Results: There was a significant difference of SOD levels in each group (p=0.00) except between group K- and P1. Giving purple fleshed sweet potatoes increased SOD levels as much as 85.81±4.59 (P1). The K+ group had the lowest SOD level 22.34±3.98. The SOD level for K- group and P2 group was 82.27±4.59 and 67.73±6.68 respectively.Conclusion: The highest SOD level is on the treatment 1 group which is administered with purple fleshed sweet potato.

Abstract Background:Oxidative stress during chilled storage is a major problem withcanine sperm. To improve the quality of chilled canine sperm during storage, many synthetic antioxidants have been examined, but different outcomes were investigated depending on antioxidant properties. The bioactive compounds of essential oils fromOcimum gratissimumleaves are known as a natural antioxidant source. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects of essential oils from Ocimum gratissimumleavesas a supplement in extender on chilled canine sperm during 12 days of storage. Results:The results showed thatlow concentrations of Ocimum gratissimum essential oils (25, 50, and 100µg/mL) have beneficial effectson sperm quality, whereasOcimum gratissimumessential oils athigh levels (above 200µg/mL) have harmful effects. Specifically, the addition of 100µg/mL ofOcimum gratissimum essential oilsto the extender had the greatestbeneficial effect in improving the quality of chilled canine sperm, and had a significant difference in all sperm quality parameters except motility when compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions:Ocimum gratissimum essential oilshave an impact on chilled canine sperm quality in a dose-dependent manner, and the best results areachieved with a maximum dose ofOcimum gratissimum essential oils of 100µg/mL.

Folic acid contains 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), one of antioxidants that can be used to inhibit reaction caused by cigarette smoke exposure. Folic acid is able to inhibit the levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) so as to reduce the occurrence of neuronal apoptosis. The objectives of this study was to determine the effect of folic acid intake during pregnancy whose mother was exposed to cigarette smoke on brain neurons apoptosis index and quantity of mice (Mus musculus) offspring. This study was an experimental laboratory study with posttest-only control group design. The subjects were 24 female mice divided into 4 groups consisting of one control group and three treatment groups. Sampling used simple random sampling, each group consisting of 6 animals. Control group 1 was not given treatment during pregnancy, group 2 was given with folic acid orally on days 0-17 of gestational age as much as 0.06 mg/day/mice. Group 3 was given with cigarette smoke exposure on days 7-17 of gestational age, amounting to 2 cigarettes/day. Group 4 was given with cigarette smoke exposure on days 7-17 of gestational age, amounting to 2 cigarettes/day and folic acid orally on days 0-17 of gestational age as much as 0.06 mg/day/mice. The result showed significant differences in all variables. In neurons apoptosis index, there were significant differences between groups 1 and 3, groups 2 and 3, groups 3 and 4, significant differences in the quantity of neurons between groups 1 and 3, groups 2 and 3, groups 2 and 4. The study concluded that there were significant difference in neural apoptosis index between all groups, and there were also significant differences in the quantity of neurons between all groups.

Smoking is one of the habits that can affect human health. One type of cigarette that is currently the choice is electric cigarettes. The e-cigarette content includes nicotine, propylene glycol, flavorings and glycerin. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of exposure to e-cigarette smoke on mice strain balb / c with the parameters of the number of spermatozoa. This study used 15 male mice which were 8-10 weeks old and weighed 25-30 grams of male mice which were divided into 3 treatment groups namely control group, treatment group one and treatment group two. In the control group no exposure to cigarette smoke was carried out while in the treatment group one was exposed to cigarette smoke in mice with a dose of 0 mg nicotine and the second treatment group was exposed to e-cigarette smoke at a dose of 18 mg nicotine. Electric cigarette smoke exposure is carried out for 30 days using a suction device from a syringe. The exposure of cigarette smoke is carried out every day with successive doses of 20 times as much as 3 times with a time lag of 10 minutes (5 minutes the chamber is closed and 5 minutes of the chamber is opened). The results showed that the average number of spermatozoa in the control group was 16.816 million / ml. The average number of spermatozoa in treatment one was 10.432 million / ml and the average number of spermatozoa in treatment two was 5.234 million / ml. This shows that exposure to cigarette smoke can reduce the number of spermatozoa from the control group to the first treatment by 42.56% and the second treatment shows a decrease from the first group by 34.65%.

ABSTRACT[Effect of Kijing Extract (Pilsbryoconcha exilis) on the Recovery of Sperm Quality in Mice (Mus musculus)]. This study aims to determine the effect of Pilsbryoconcha exilis extract on the quality of M. muscullus sperm. The approach used for the study was experiment with a complete randomized design model. In this study, 4 treatments and 5 replications were conducted, including treatment 1 which only administered aquades as control (P0), treatment 2 which only given paracetamol dose 250 mg / kg (P1), and treatment 3 given paracetamol dose 250 mg / kg and P. exilis extract dose 0,46 mg / g (P2) and treatment 4 given paracetamol 250 mg / kg and extract P. exilis 0,69 mg / g (P3). Technique of data analysis using qualitative descriptive and statistical test of One Way Annova parametry, and if obtained significant difference then continued statistic test of Smallest Real Difference. Abstract: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that suppresses the oxidative stress caused by cigarette smoke purpose of this study demonstrate whether vitamin C can provide a different quality of sperm male mice Mus musculus L are given exposure to cigarette smoke. Methodology: The study subjects are 32 male mice Mus musculus L, which were randomly divided into 2 groups. The first group was the control group (K) who received treatment exposure from cigarette smoke without giving vitamin C and the second group is the treatment group (P) are given exposure from cigarette smoke and vitamin C dose of 0.40 mg / gBB /day. The treatment during 30 days, on day 31 the mice were terminated, and then examined the quality of spermatozoa motility of spermatozoa, sperm concentration and morphology of spermatozoa. Results: Test oneway ANOVA on the mean motility of spermatozoa showed Ma control group (47,38%), Mb (11,88%), Mc (18,13%), Md (22,63%) and the Ma treatment group (11.68%), Mb (17,04%), Mc (35,77%), Md (16,5%). The mean concentration of spermatozoa obtained 63,34x105/ml control group and the treatment group and the mean morphology of spermatozoa 81,75x105/ml control group showed normal morphology 50% and abnormal morphology 56,189% while the treatment group showed normal morphology 60% and 40% abnormal. Result from Oneway ANOVA test there are differences significant in the morphology of spermatozoa, concentration of spermatozoa, sperm concentration, and sperm morphology between groups (p <0,05). Conclusion: Vitamin C can improve the quality of spermatozoa after exposure to cigarette smoke. Keywords: ciggaratte, vitamin C, quality of spermatozoa.   Abstrak: Vitamin C merupakan  antioksidan yang menekan proses stres oksidatif akibat asap rokok Tujuan penelitian membuktikan apakah vitamin C dapat memberikan perbedaan kualitas spermatozoa mencit jantan Mus Musculus L yang diberi paparan asap rokok. Metodologi: Subyek penelitian 32 ekor mencit jantan Mus Musculus L, yang dibagi secara acak menjadi 2 kelompok. Kelompok pertama adalah kelompok kontrol (K) yang mendapat perlakuan paparan asap rokok tanpa pemberian vitamin C dan kelompok kedua yaitu kelompok perlakuan (P) yang diberi paparan asap rokok dan vitamin C dosis 0,40mg/gBB/hari. Perlakuan berlangsung selama 30 hari, pada hari ke-31 mencit tersebut diterminasi, kemudian dilakukan pemeriksaan kualitas spermatozoa yaitu motilitas spermatozoa, konsentrasi spermatozoa dan morfologi spermatozoa. Hasil: Uji oneway ANOVA pada rerata motilitas spermatozoa kelompok kontrol menunjukan Ma(47.38%), Mb(11.88%), Mc(18.13%), Md(22.63%) dan kelompok perlakuan Ma(11.68%), Mb(17.04%), Mc(35.77%), Md(16.5%). Rerata konsentrasi spermatozoa kelompok kontrol didapatkan 63.34x105/ml, dan kelompok perlakuan 81.75x105/ml dan rerata morfologi spermatozoa kelompok kontrol menunjukkan morfologi normal 50% dan morfologi abnormal 56,189% sedangkan kelompok perlakuan menunjukkan morfologi normal 60% dan abnormal 40%. Hasil Uji oneway ANOVA terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada konsentrasi spermatozoa yaitu morfologi spermatozoa, konsentrasi spermatozoa, dan morfologi spermatozoa antar kelompok (p<0.05). Kesimpulan: Pemberian vitamin C dapat memperbaiki kualitas spermatozoa setelah pemaparan asap rokok. Kata kunci: Rokok, vitamin C, kualitas spermatozoa.

Abstract: Continuous exposure to cigarette smoke has been reported as the number one cause of infertility in men. Cigarette smoke increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) thereby causing infertility in men. Nigella sativa contains antioxidant that may decrease ROS level in hope to improve infertility. This 50 days study is conducted to see the effect of Nigella sativa extract to the sperm quality of nine wistar rats that have been exposed by cigarette smoke. The rats were divided into three groups of three: the control group and the group treated with Nigella sativa administered orally at the dose of 200 mg kg body weight and 400 mg/kg body weight. Sperm quality was observed by overlooking at the concentration, motility, and morphology of each group. The mean data of each group was obtained and tested for significance using Independent Samples T-Test. This study found the comparison of both motility (p=0,006) and morphology (p=0,000) between control group and the group with the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight to be significant, as well as the comparison of motility (p=0,001) and morphology (p=0,000) between the control group and the group with the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight.Keywords: sperm quality, nigella sativa, smoking, cigaretteAbstrak: Paparan secara terus menerus terhadap asap rokok merupakan penyebab infertilitas utama pada pria. Asap rokok dapat meningkatkan Reactive oxygen species (ROS) yang selanjutnya dapat menyebabkan infertilitas. Nigella sativa mengandung antioksidan yang dapat menunrunkan jumlah ROS dan diharapkan untuk dapat mengkoreksi infertilitas. Penelitian yang dilaksanakan selama 50 hari ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh dari ekstrak Nigella sativa terhadap kualitas spermatozoa sembilan tikus wistar yang terpapar asap rokok. Tikus dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok masing-masing terdiri atas tiga tikus; terdapat kelompok kontrol dan kelompok yang diberi ekstrak Nigella sativa dengan dosis 200 mg/kg BB dan 400 mg/kg BB. Kualitas spermatozoa dinilai berdasarkan konsentrasi, motilitas dan morfologi dari masing-masing kelompok perlakuan. Data rerata dari tiap kelompok perlakuan diambil dan di diuji signifikans menggunakan uji T-independen. Penelitian ini mendapati perbandingan baik motilitas (p=0,006) ataupun morfologi (p=0,000) dari kelompok kontrol dan perlakuan dengan dosis 200 mg/kg BB dibilang signifikan, sama halnya dengan perbandingan antara motilitas (0,001) dan morfologi (0,000) dari kelompok kontrol dan perlakuan dengan dosis 400 mg/kg BB.Kata kunci: kualitas sperma, jintan hitam, rokok
