Two series of polymeric blends have been prepared based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC)/polyacrylic acid (PAA) (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4) and HPMC/sodium alginate (SA) (1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:40) and investigated by Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). IR analysis confirmed the interaction between the polymeric components in the blend and the degree of structural organization. Crystallinity changes in the blends were observed as a function of a number of experimental parameters, such as temperature, composition and HPMC concentration, by determining the quantitative crystallinity indexes: Total Crystallinity Index (TCI), Lateral Order Index (LOI) and Hydrogen Bond Index (HBI).

The capability of biomaterials such as chitosan and collagen to support cell growth and proliferation makes them promising candidates in biomedical applications. Chitosan and collagen from marine world have already been proved to be better alternatives to those from terrestrial world. In the current study, chitosan and collagen were isolated from shrimp shell and fish skin, respectively. The polymers were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectra analysis, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance analysis, CHN analysis, and sodium dodedcyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. Interpenetrating blends of these polymers were synthesized in the form of films in two different ratios. Glutaraldehyde was used as an additional cross-linker to provide more stability to the blends. The polymeric blends were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance, scanning electron microscopy analysis, and swelling studies. The biocompatibility evaluation included hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility studies. Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance analysis of films confirmed the presence of characteristic functional groups and molecular interactions of the two polymers in the two blends. Homogenous blending of the two biopolymers in both film compositions was confirmed by the smooth surface images in scanning electron microscopy analysis. The swelling study revealed that both the films can effectively transfer water across it, hence nutrients and waste materials. During hemocompatibility evaluations, no red blood cell aggregation was observed and both the films adsorbed plasma proteins, predominantly albumin, when they made contact with blood. Although one of the films showed slightly higher hemolysis, the value was within the acceptable range. More than 90% viability obtained in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay shows the non-toxic nature of the two films. No sign of morphological changes to L929 cells was seen when they were in direct contact with both films. Live/dead assay using acridine orange/ethidium bromide cocktail showed that the films have not induced apoptosis to the L929 cells, which further asserts their biocompatible nature.

A novel geometry for internal reflection elements is described. These elements have been found most useful in the FT-IR analysis of samples by attenuated total reflectance (ATR). Both single and multiple internal reflection elements are described. These elements provide three basic benefits. First, the geometry is such that an element may be exchanged for another of differing angle of incidence without the need for optical realignment of the sampling accessory. Second, for a given element thickness and width, the design allows a larger aperture over the conventional designs (parallelograms and trapezoids) for angles of incidence greater than 45 degrees, resulting in better sensitivity. Third, the elements are of a simple design, and are easy to fabricate.

PLA-based composites containing CF in the range 0 to 10 wt. % were prepared by melt mixing technique. The prepared composites were investigated in terms of processability, chemical structure (by Attenuated total reflectance - Fourier Transform Infrared - ATR-FT-IR analysis), thermal (Differential Scanning Calorimetry - DSC), optical properties (using UV-Vis spectrometry), barrier and migration in distilled water. Also, the behaviour of PLA based composites at sterilization was performed by examination the changes in their chemical structure. This study shows the feasibility of improving of PLA properties by using cellulose fibres, designed for flexible food packaging.

Analysis of natural product remain challenging issues for analytical chemist, since natural products are complicated system of mixture. The most popular methods of choice used for quality control of raw material and finished product are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). The utilization of FTIR-ATR (Fourier Transform Infrared-Attenuated Total Reflectance) method in natural product analysis is still limited. This study attempts to expand the use of FTIR spectroscopy in authenticating Indonesian coffee powder.The coffee samples studied were taken from nine regions in Indonesia, namely Aceh Gayo, Flores, Kintamani, Mandheling, Papua, Sidikalang, Toraja, Kerinci and Lampung.The samples in the form of coffee bean from various regions were powdered . The next step conducted was to determine the spectrum using the FTIR-ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) using ZnSe crystal of 8000 resolution. Spectrum samples, then, were analyzed using chemometrics. The utilized chemometric model was the principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). Based on the chemometric analysis, there are similarities between Aceh Gayo coffee with Toraja coffee, Mandailing coffee, Kintamani coffee and Flores coffee. Sidikalang coffee has a similarity to Flores coffee; Papua coffee has a similarity to Sidikalang coffee; Lampung coffee has a similarity to Sidikalang coffee, while Kerinci coffee has a similarity to Papua coffee.

Background: Numerous Ayurvedic formulations contains tugaksheeree as key ingredient. Tugaksheereeis the starch gained from the rhizomes of two plants, Curcuma angustifoliaRoxb. (Zingiberaceae) and Marantaarundinacea (MA) Linn. (Marantaceae). Objective: The primary concerns in quality assessment of Tugaksheeree occur due to adulteration or substitution. Method: In current study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) technique with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) facility was used to evaluate tugaksheeree samples. Total 10 different samples were studied and transmittance mode was kept to record the spectra devoid of pellets of KBR. Further treatment was given with multi component tools by considering fingerprint region of the spectra. Multivariate analysis was performed by various chemometric methods. Result: Multi component methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA)were used to discriminate the tugaksheeree samples using Minitab software. Conclusion: This method can be used as a tool to differentiate samples of tugaksheeree from its adulterants and substitutes.
