The emergency situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic required all Italian universities to implement alternative teaching strategies to traditional face-to-face lessons. At the University of Catania, this situation prompted the start of distance learning paths in a synchronous mode at the very beginning of the emergency. At the same time, the lecturers were encouraged to video-record the lessons in order to make them available to students also in asynchronous mode. On the basis of this emergency situation, an investigation was immediately launched to identify the consequences of the new teaching methods on student learning processes; the research began in the first phase of the lockdown in Italy (March 2020) and ended in January 2021. The aim of this contribution is to present the results of the research conducted on a sample of 300 students following bachelor degree courses of the Department of Education at the University of Catania. The research aims to detect the students’ points of view on the strengths and weaknesses of the synchronous and asynchronous ways of presenting lessons and their respective impact on learning processes. The results of the research could provide useful insights to rethink university teaching even when the emergency situation comes to an end.

Discusses the rise of information technology functions in higher education and the related advent of quality standards for on-line education. The limited nature of existing guidelines is emphasized, particularly in the dimension of establishing authentic relationships, empowerment of faculty and students, and the inculcation of critical thinking. The Borkian vision of the future of education is summarized and contrasted with the limits if not failure of the legacies of past large-scale educational investments in programmed learning and in computer simulation. The drift toward mandated standards in on-line/distance education is discussed as well as the tension of this with empowerment concepts. Further contrast is drawn between the competing models of the university as “community of scholars” and as “marketplace of consumers.” Cost-cutting motives for on-line course delivery are explored in some detail, raising issues about radical proposals to restructure university teaching functions. A hybrid model, involving both computer-mediated and face-to-face methods, is seen as the superior instructional strategy, but the cost of this model raises the danger that a two-tier educational system will emerge – a more expensive upper tier with sound traditional education supplemented with the benefits of electronic media, and a cheaper, inferior tier dispensing programmed training to meet objectives far narrower than the traditional goals of liberal education.

Apart from the evident tragedy that the COVID-19 outbreak has meant regarding both personal and economic costs, the normal functioning of the academic year has been drastically altered at all educational levels. Regarding Spain, the state of alert implemented by the government from mid-March to June has affected traditional face-to-face sessions at universities, as they were forbidden and replaced by online lessons. The aim of this work was to explain our own experience during the COVID-19 outbreak in a chemical engineering laboratory at the University of Extremadura, concerning the university teaching and the final degree project follow-up, whose method of teaching was active and participatory, based on constructivism and focused on the student as the center of the learning process. Thus, the confinement affected both the teachers and students differently, depending on the degree of completion of their main tasks and their previous skills with computing and virtual tools, among other factors. The existence of an operating virtual campus and an online library has made the transition to total e-learning and telework easier for teachers and students.

The article aims to highlight how the knowledge of university students' characteristics is a key-point for planning innovative teaching. The Bologna University Project refers to a Formative Educational Evaluation model, which is focused on higher education teaching skills and aims to have an impact on teaching and learning processes' multiple levels and dimensions, in a diachronic perspective. The application of the model to different academic contexts of the University of Bologna was carried on by two evaluation research pilot studies with "Nursing" and "Economics and Finance" (CLEF) Degree teachers. This model includes evaluation actions specifically oriented in the formative sense (analysis and progressive re-planning of teaching actions supported by ad hoc higher education teachers training interventions) in order to promote teachers' capacity for reflection, self-analysis of their teaching practices and specific training actions based on innovative methodologies

On 14 March 2020, Spain came to a standstill and the movement of people was restricted with the publication of Royal Decree (RD) 463/2020 and the education sector had to reinvent itself with new rules and procedures. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of the different government regulations and their effect on university teaching planning. Since the approval of RD 555/2020, educational competences were returned to the autonomous communities and each of them implemented different public policies. We will analyse the specific impact on teaching planning and models applied in Catalonia and their development, which vary according to the evolution of the number of COVID-19 infections and which has been marking the political, economic and social agenda since the beginning of the pandemic. The university has moved from teaching in a face-to-face environment to a virtual or semi-virtual or blended learning environment. This change implies a paradigmatic transformation in communication, education, organisation, evaluation and planning, among others. At ESIC Business & Marketing School (ESIC) these pedagogical paradigm shifts have contributed to transform the learning processes in a context of pedagogical innovation.

El momento que viven las universidades ecuatorianas, se caracteriza por la búsqueda de una mejora significativa en el campo académico, investigativo y de vinculación con la comunidad. La intervención de algunas universidades por parte del CES, ha sido una medida que se constituye en oportunidad para lograr cubrir las expectativas de la sociedad y de las instancias superiores encargadas de velar por el desarrollo de la Academia. Las deficiencias encontradas develaron las causas principales que aquejan a estas comunidades: el pobre desarrollo de la investigación. En este marco, el presente trabajo se constituye en un tema pertinente, al proyectar una propuesta que se sustenta en la necesidad de formación de la docencia universitaria en el ámbito de la investigación. El análisis que se realiza a la propuesta, tiene un enfoque social pensado en función del servicio que presta la Universidad a la colectividad en aras de responder a la sociedad que concomitante al progreso mundial, apuntala su economía en el desarrollo del conocimiento. Considerar una estrategia para el desarrollo de las competencias investigativas en los docentes universitarios, ayudará a fortalecer la función investigativa, consecuentemente, se generará y crearán condiciones que permitan transferir tecnologías tendientes a mejorar las condiciones de vida del sector.  Palabras claves: Docencia universitaria, competencia investigativa, investigación, universidad, estrategia  Social view of the strategy for the formation of the research competence in the university professor    Abstract  The Ecuadorian universities are changing today and that is characterized by the search for a significant improvement in the academic and research fields and the link with the community. The intervention of some universities by the CES has been a measure which constitutes an opportunity to meet the society’s expectations and those of the higher level authorities to ensure the development of the university. The deficiencies found uncovered the main causes affecting these communities: the poor development of research. In this context, the present work constitutes a relevant topic, to project a proposal that is based on the need for training in the field of researching the university teachers. The analysis of the proposal has a social approach, which functions through the service provided by the University to the community in order to respond to the global society concomitant progress that seeks the development of knowledge while developing the world economy. To consider a strategy for the researching competence development in university teachers will help strengthening the researching function. The aim of this paper is to analyze the primary stress factors female professors at online universities are exposed to. The technique used for the prospective and exploratory analysis was the Delphi method. Two rounds of consultations were done with fourteen judges with broad experience in health and safety at work and university teaching who reached a consensus of opinion regarding a list of nine psychosocial risk factors. Among the most important risk factors, mental overload, time pressure, the lack of a schedule, and emotional exhaustion were highlighted. These risk factors are related to the usage and expansion of information and communication technology (ICT) and to the university system itself, which requires initiating more research in the future in order to develop the intervention programs needed to fortify the health of the affected teachers and protect them from stress and other psychosocial risks.
