This is a correlational research focuses on finding out whether there is a correlation of past tense and compound word mastery toward the ability in comprehending narrative text which conducted at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Remboken, academic year 2018/2019. The population of this research was the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Remboken which consisted of 153 students. Random sampling technique was used to draw sample consisted of 30 students. The researcher administered three kinds of tests in the form of written namely grammar test, vocabulary test, and reading comprehension test. to find out the validity and reliability of the tests, the instruments used were tested. The result of the tests showed that there was a significant correlation of past tense and compound word mastery toward the ability in comprehending narrative text. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient established a positive correlation among the variables with score 0.892 and the probability values obtained is 0. Since the value of significance 0 < 0.05, it can be decided that the hypothesis H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. As the result, there was a positive correlation of past tense and compound word mastery toward the ability in comprehending narrative text at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Remboken, academic year 2018/2019.Keywords: correlation, past tense, compound word, comprehending narrative text

The method of this study is correlational research. The population of the study is all of the fourth semester students while the sample is 30 students taken by simple random sampling technique. The technique used to analyze the data are simple, multiple correlation, and regression by using microsoft excel. The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between extroversion personality and vocabulary mastery toward speaking skill both partially and simultaneously. The positive correlation indicates that extroversion personality and vocabulary mastery tend to go up or to go down together with speaking skill.</p>

The objective of the study was to find out the  correlation between students’ anxiety and students’ achievement in learning English. The research design was correlational research which consisted of two variables, independent and dependent variable. The sampling technique was probability sampling with cluster random sampling. The sample in this research was thirty nine students of X8 social class of SMAN 08 Batam. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz  was addressed to check the existence of students’ anxiety. The instrument to measure the students’ achievement was a diagnostic test which consists of listening and reading comprehension test. After tested the validity and reliability of the test by using SPSS V.16.0, the researcher distributed the test to the sample. Then, the researcher analysed the correlation by using Product Moment Formula by Pearson to correlate both students’ anxiety (X variable) and students’ achievement (Y variable). The result showed that the r count or Pearson correlation was 0.092. The r table for 39 respondents is 0.312. It means that r count is lower than r table and Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. The r count showed -0.092. Hence, there was significant negative correlation between Students’ Anxiety and Students’ Achievement in learning English at the tenth grade students of Senior High School 08 Batam.

There are 105 students taken as sample in this study by using purposive sampling technique.  The instruments of this research are mid test score of vocabulary examination and basic speaking Examination. The result of calculation using SPSS 20 program found that, (r (105) = 0.459, p = 0.000) was also higher than r at 5% and 1% significant level. It could be concluded that alternative hypothesis (H1 table) stating that there is a significant positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University and null hypothesis rejected. Based on the research findings, it is shown that there is positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University. It means that students’ who had much vocabulary performed speaking better than the student who had lack of vocabulary.

This research aimed at describing the correlation between students’ internet literacy and their passive vocabulary size. The findings of this research were expected to predict how much the two variables correlate. This research was beneficial as inter internet users in Indonesia were growing in numbers (55 billion users in 2011), and most of them were students. Their intensity in using internet would affect on education, later. Thus, it was important to see whether there was a strong positive correlation between students’ internet literacy and their passive vocabulary size. Passive vocabulary became the limitation of this research as it could explain how big students’ ‘vocabulary reservoir,’ and thus, it could predict the active vocabulary size. This was a correlational research involving randomly 81 senior students of English Education Department. The instruments used were a set of vocabulary test, and a questionnaire on internet literacy. Using two-tailed significant level, it is found that the result of rho is -0,001 with 0,993 of significant level. Therefore, there is no correlation between students’ internet literacy and their passive vocabulary size. It can be concluded that there are other factors which affect students’ passive vocabulary.

The goal of this study determined a relationship between students' knowledge of the simple past tense and their ability to create a recount text in tenth-grade pupils of SMA N 07 Ogan Ilir. The study's participants were all Tenth-Grade Students at SMA N 07 Ogan Ilir. A total of 86 students were present in the population. The  sample consisted of 86 students who were chosen using a total sampling technique. This investigation was carried out using correlation research. The data was administered through simple past tense mastery test and writing recount text. Pearson Product Moment correlation was employed to analyze the data. The correlation coefficient, or r-obtained (0.325), was found higher than r-table (0.176), with a p-value of 0.0020.05. It meant that learners' grasp of the simple past tense and their ability to write recount texts were related. It is possible to conclude that students' knowledge of the simple past tense has a significant impact on their ability to write recount material.

This study was undertaken in order to assess the acquisition of information questions by the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar in academic year 2009/2010. The undertaking of the study was motivated by the fact that information questions are the fundamental basis of good communication skills in English. This study was intended to answer the research question: To what extent is the acquisition of the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar in constructing information question in English. This study made use of an ex-post facto research design. The population of the study was the eleventh grade students of accountancy department which consists of two classes with the total students of 79 altogether. They were considered to have homogeneous characteristic. In this study, only 40 students were determined as the objects by using quota random sampling technique with lottery system. The data obtained in the study which were in the form of raw scores showing the subjects’ acquisition of information questions of the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar, were analyzed with norm reference measure with five standard values. It clearly showed that: (1) there are 5 subjects (12.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got excellent ability in asking information questions in English, (2) there are 11 subjects (27.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got good ability in asking information questions in English. (3) there are 13 subjects (32.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got sufficient ability in asking information questions in English and (4) there are 11 subjects (27.5%) out of 40 subjects under study who got insufficient ability in asking information questions in English. In general these research findings revealed that the acquisition of information questions by the eleventh grade students of SMK Saraswati Denpasar is remarked as good, where the number of subjects who got insufficient acquisition in information questions were under 50% or half of the number of subjects understudy. The number of students who got insufficient acquisition in information questions is only 11 subjects or 27.5% out of 40 subjects understudy. The findings of the study have limited validity and reliability, because it made use of an ex-post facto research design. Therefore, the research findings should be carefully depended upon.
