The purpose of this article examines changes in the technological capabilities of the supplier firms in the automotive sector after the introduction of Industry 4.0. The Industry 4.0 policy has recently been introduced to revive the manufacturing industry and promote competitiveness in the global market. Questionnaire data were collected from 32 supplier firms of the automotive component industry in Indonesia. The questionnaire was designed to measure variables, including production, investment, innovation, and linkage capabilities. The result shows that the Indonesian supplier firms, mainly large firms, are engaged in Industry 4.0, which affects their capabilities. Production capabilities have been improved among most firms, including large, small, and medium enterprises. There is an improvement in the volume of production and the quality of products. However, Indonesian small and medium firms acknowledged the limitation of investment and innovation capabilities. Compared with large firms, small and medium firms have limited resources that hinder them from investing in technology or human capital. During the introduction of advanced technologies, supplier firms' linkage relationship and their customers remain relatively stagnant. Moreover, in terms of linkages, in which the arrangement between assemblers and suppliers has been set, the automotive firms are highly independent.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) must continue to combine technology and market adaptation or open innovation to sustain their business. One of these ways is to promote their products and services extensively. This study investigated the best media to promote SMEs in the local agricultural markets of Hungary. This study uses an approach of asking consumers where they receive information about SMEs and their determinants. Research questionnaires were distributed to 156 consumers who purchased agricultural products on the Budapest Central Market Hall. The data were analyzed using a binary logistic model. The studies showed that consumers obtain market information through word-of-mouth and digital media. Older consumers tend to receive information through word-of-mouth, while consumers who rarely interact with others or who are educated or foreign choose digital media. Therefore, SMEs in Hungary’s local agricultural markets have yet to focus on developing promotional activities through these two media. For the future, recommendations are given to SMEs in Hungary to maintain the quality of products and services and to develop two-way communication in digital media (e-WOM).

The motivation behind subcontracting relationships in the motor vehicle manufacturing The purpose of this study was to determine internal and external constraints to subcontracting arrangements between large firms and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the motor vehicle manufacturing industry in Kenya in order to establish the reasons for the gap in those arrangements. The sector was chosen for the study because of the government’s selection of the sector to promote subcontracting arrangements between small and medium enterprises and large firms in Kenya. Secondly, the sector was chosen because of the complexity of the motor vehicle industry with one motor vehicle comprising about 10,000 component parts, all of which would be difficult for one company to manufacture in-house. The research was mainly qualitative but quantitative data was also used. Content analysis approach was used to analyze the qualitative data and descriptive statistics to analyze the quantitative data. Data was collected from two of the three motor vehicle assembles in Kenya, nine out of thirteen franchise holders and 66 of the 72 component parts suppliers who are mainly small and medium enterprises. The results indicate that the level of subcontracting that takes place in the motor vehicle manufacturing industry is minimal. This is motivated mainly by a desire to remain in the good books of the government. The big enterprises are not willing to buy component parts from local suppliers and especially not local SME suppliers mainly due to the inability of the SMEs to supply quality products to schedule, lack of local suppliers for certain parts, the proliferation of makes and models and competition from imported second hand vehicles from Japan and Europe. The proliferation of makes and models also requires frequent technological changes which both assemblers and SMEs owners find difficult to keep up with. The study recommends that the government should reduce the age of imported second hand vehicles to not more than five years, find a way of compelling the franchise holders and assemblers to buy parts locally and put in place appropriate policies regarding the sector. SMEs should also acquire up to date technology and become more competitive.

The market of ready-to-eat salads is experiencing a noticeable growth in Europe. The commercial success of these products is linked to the growing demand for fresh, healthy and nutritionally valuable products that can be consumed without preparation time and are perceived as safe and very high-quality products. Since they are intended to be consumed without additional treatments, these ready-to-eat products are associated with a high microbiological risk. The aim of this work was to evaluate the microbiological quality and safety of ready-to-eat salads sold in widespread supermarket chains in Lazio, Italy, at the packaging date, during shelf-life and during home-refrigeration. The study also aimed to determine the differences between low, medium and high cost products. Salmonella spp., L. monocytogenes were chosen as safety indicators as specified by European regulations while total aerobic mesophilic bacteria and Escherichia coli were chosen as quality indicators as suggested by national guidelines. Analyses were performed following the ISO standards and in parallel, for the evaluation of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, with an alternative colorimetric system, the MBS method, in order to propose a simple, affordable and accurate alternative for testing the microbiological quality of products, especially suitable for small and medium enterprises and on-site analyses.

The paper considers necessary conditions for acceleration of labor productivity growth in Russia. Based on micro data, as well as aggregate data, the paper quantifies the contribution of small and medium firms to labor productivity growth. It shows that mere increase of the number of small and medium enterprises is not as important for positive effects of these programs, as qualitative improvements: development of favorable environment for growth, which is largely determined by business climate. Accelerating productivity growth involves redistribution of labor and capital from inefficient to efficient enterprises. In particular, it is necessary to create conditions, which allow a firm to grow after it enters the market instead of stagnating as a small firm with low efficiency. At the same time, it is necessary for ineffective firms, which exhausted their growth potential, to have an opportunity to exit the market easily leaving resources including labor to fast-growing companies.

Innovation plays a major role and is a crucial component of the organization’s growth. Creativity and innovation have become increasingly popular as key contributors to firm success in the last few decades or so. The incoming technology of Industrial Revolution 4.0 forced many companies to be innovative to compete in technological era. However, many SMEs are not ready and less innovative. Furthermore, there is lack of research focus on HPWS implementation amongst SMEs indicates that further research must be conducted along these lines. Therefore, this study aim to investigate the effect of high performance work system (HPWS) towards innovative work behaviour of employees in small and medium enterprises. This study used quantitative approach to identify the critical success factor of high performance work systems (HPWS) in Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SME) manufacturing industry. This study used descriptive analysis to analyze the data. Five-point Likert scales items ranging from (1-strongly disagree, 5 – strongly agree) employed for measuring the HPWS. Therefore, the total of 81 items survey questions were adapted to obtain the respondents for SME manufacturing industry. Reliability analysis shows that all the HPWS dimensions have very good reliability with Cronbach’s alpha value range from 0.884 to 0.976. According to Tang et al (2014), Cronbach’s alpha range between 0.70 and 0.80 considered as good reliability whereby 0.80 and 0.90 considered as very good reliability. Result also showed that selective staffing has the highest mean score followed by employee participation, which are 3.951 and 3.833 respectively. This proved that selective staffing is most important critical success factor in the HPWS implementation for Malaysian SME manufacturing industry.
