The current state of corruption should encourage every citizens of the nation, all parties, the leaders of the nation, law enforcement officials, educators and religious leaders, to focus their attention to character building. Character development should be established as part of the national strategy to improve nation’s life. The study begins from my concern about the backwardness of character education in Indonesia, and then from there I attempts to propose alternative solutions. The article concludes that to be successfull, character development should include the participation of three important institutions of social life: family, school and community. Therefore, the first step  is  to reconnect the educational institutions with other institutions. Without the three institutions, the school character education program is only a discourse which will not succeed because there is no continuity and harmonization.

AbstractIn general, the development of character building in a formal education can be applied through buying and selling transaction activities in the school canteen. The widespread use of computer technology can also be applied in trade activities in school canteens as an effort to establish the character of Indonesia's young generation with integrity and honesty. The introductory on the use of technology through a Self-Purchasing System or also commonly known as the Self-Check-out System is a mechanism that provides an opportunity for customers to process their purchases by scanning the items they buy and making direct payments before leaving the store/store. This technology can be initiated into religious and non-religious-based elementary schools that practice the values integrity and honest character from a specific religion to general values. However, even though these values have become a daily part of learning, the use of modern technology in the practice of education cannot be denied. Character building education in classroom contexts is nowadays gaining a lot more attention than in the past as a way to provide solution to the social misbehavior that students often conduct outside classroom and even school levels. This is in line with the new curriculum of 2013 in which “Pendidikan nasional berfungsi mengembangkan kemampuan dan membentuk watak serta peradaban bangsa yang bermartabat....peserta didik agar menjadi manusia yang beriman dan bertakwa kepada Tuhan yang Maha Esa, berakhlak mulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mandiri, dan mejadi warga negara yang demokratis serta bertanggung jawab (Suherdi, 2013). This indicates that character building education is very important in producing students who have a strong religious character as well as a good attitude to make them not only succeed academically in school but also in their social life. This study is thus aimed at finding out the aspects of characters that teachers and students need to possess, the teachers’ role in promoting character education in the classrooms, and the importance of character education to enhance students’ learning activities. This study involves several teachers and students of different classes from some English learning institutions. The preliminary study revealed that teachers do not have a significant role in emphasizing character building in the classrooms and that most students are not fully aware of the importance of character education in enhancing their learning.

The text explores traditions of film education, understood as education through film, in Polish film studies. Although film education has been a de facto part of informal education, we can trace many initiatives aimed at making it an element of formal schooling. Hence the attempt to incorporate film education into school curriculums at various levels of education, undertaken mainly by academic film experts (B. W. Lewicki, E. Nurczyńska-Fidelska). School film education has been fraught with numerous technological obstacles, as well as a lack of available materials to use as a foundation for educational practice. It has also been a challenge to develop appropriate competences of teaching staff. Film education has not found its place as a subject within formal education until today. The current fragmentation of entities responsible for it, and the lack of a coherent strategy means that film education becomes the domain of commercial and non-commercial programmes implemented in cinemas for the purposes of school education.

Children’s good characters should be formed since their early time growing up because it is an individual’s set of psychological characteristics that influence person’s ability and inclination for function morally, as Marvin Berkowitz said (William Damond, 2002). Besides, Dimermen (2009:9), educational prationers identified 10 characters which have to be developed in children such as: 1) respect, 2) responsibility, 3) honesty, 4) empathy, 5) fairness, 6) initiative, 7) courage, 8) perseverance, 9) optimism, 10) integrity. These characters can be transferred by school as an agent of education, called character education. Megawangi (2004: 95) said that character education is a way to educate children in order to decide wise decision and practice it in regular life, so they can give positive contribution for environment. Moreover, character education is an education to develop good character from children, make them able to judge which one right or wrong, care deeply about the right and then doing what they believe to be right. Shortly, character education can be internalized habituation about what is right, so that student become understand (cognitive) about what is right and what is wrong, and can feel (affective) the values of good thing and always trying to do that (psychomotor). Character education has to consist moral knowledge, moral feeling, and moral action. It is related to the habit, so it has to be practiced all the time. Moreover, build the good character needs communities’ character including family, school, religious institution, information media, government, and all supported component close to the young generation. The roles of school in this case are stated in learning process, habituation, extracurricular, and socialize. To develop character from children, school should not create a new curriculum but must integrate all national system which has been strong basic in formal education world. That is the implication of the character education. Last but not least, the best way in forming good character for children is through the model. Teacher here is the main component who plays important role in giving kinds of good examples, even by interaction with the student, routine activities, or spontaneous and incidental activities in the school. From those points above we hope that our young generation has much capability not only in cognitive side, but also in their attitude, manner, and their personality.
