In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, higher education institutions should change practices of educational programs and services, which are mainly based on traditional classroom-based instructions, to allow students to have more diverse experiences. Since college students spend relatively more time engaged in out-of-class activities than attending regular courses, it is necessary to examine how participating in out-of-class programs is related to cultivation of the competencies that the future demands. This study explores the relationship between out-of-class activity participation and perceived change in cognitive and social outcomes of Korean college students. Five out-of-class activities were examined: learning community, undergraduate research, service learning, internship, and residential college programs. K-NSSE (Korea-National Survey of Student Engagement) data were analyzed using hierarchical linear model analysis. The study findings are consistent with the results of previous research that demonstrated a positive association between participating in out-of-class activities and students’ cognitive and social outcomes.

AbstractOn the current research it was developed an alcoholism analysis from the qualitative approach asumming that this kind of methodology brings a deeper look of the family experience with an alcoholic member. The children perspective was taken as a central matter of the study through living with an alcoholic father, given that the literature has said that they turn out to be the most affected. According to the purpose of the research, the life stories of four young college students with an alcoholic father served, getting from it a main category that simplifies the living of it: “Child’s development within the family and changes in their vision of it”. In obedience to the interpretations, it was confirmed that an addiction causes more physical, psychological and emotional damage to the family than to the addict. It also has come to the conclusion that this problematic causes inestability in the family enviroment perceived as hostile which leads the children to change the meaning they give to family while it changes their position within. At first, the children assume responsabilities that don’t belong to them and then they end up disassociating from the family due to the wear of the parent-child relationships.Key words: Alcoholism, father, children, vision, experience.

The intergenerational association of alexithymic characteristics of mothers and their children were examined in a sample of 232 pairs of college students and their mothers. Scores on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Parental Bonding Inventory, and the Family Environmental Scale of college students were significantly correlated with their mothers' memories of when they were also 20 years old. College students' scores were significantly correlated with their mothers' scores on each questionnaire. The student-mother pairs were further divided into two family types, nuclear and extended families. Correlations were higher for scores of the nuclear family than for those of the extended family. Such results suggest there may be intergenerational transmission of alexithymia and related factors from mothers to children.

Family environment appears to be an important determinant of friendship quality. Despite this apparent link, few studies have explored how family environment relates to friendship, especially among college students. The present study examined the relationship between family environment and best friendships, by administering the Family Environment Scale (FES) and the Acquaintance Description Form—Revised (ADF-F2) to 408 college students. Family environment was a better predictor of friendship quality for female college students than for male college students. For the women, a total of 13% of the FES and ADF-F2 correlations were significant at the p < .01 level. The best predictors of friendship quality for the women were the FES active recreational and intellectual—cultural dimensions. Gender differences were also evident in students' perceptions of their families' environments and their views of the quality of their best friendships. Implications of the present study for college adjustment and retention are discussed.

Little is known about mental disorders and related factors in college students from nontraditional families in China. We administered the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (Chinese version) and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R; Chinese version) to 3,338 college students, 2,745 from traditional families and 593 from nontraditional families. The results showed that students in a stepfamily had the highest SCL-90-R scores, and students in an adoptive family had the lowest scores. The SCL-90-R factor scores were negatively correlated with current cohesion and adaptability scores. Poor economic status and loneliness were independent risk factors, and high current cohesion and adaptability were preventive factors for mental disorders. These findings indicate that reducing poverty and loneliness, and maintaining good family functioning may decrease the risk of mental disorders among college students.
