Grains have become an integral part of the human diet due to their nutritional values, thus any form of contamination especially by heavy metals is of great concern. This research evaluated the level of Cadmium, Chromium, Lead and Mercury in the commonly consumed foods (Rice and Beans) across Yobe State, North-eastern Nigeria. A composite sample from each of the three Senatorial Zones was collected from farm harvests and designed as ZAR, ZAB, ZBR, ZBB, ZCR and ZCB for Zone A Rice, Zone A Beans, Zone B Rice, Zone B Beans, Zone C Rice and Zone C Beans respectively. The metal Concentration was determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results in mg/Kg across the local governments indicates respective ranges for Hg, Pb, Cd, and Cr of 0.30 - 4.04, 0.16 - 0.92, 0.03 - 0.05 and 0.02- 0.52 in Rice, 0.14-3.73, 0.05-0.33, 0.05-0.07 and 0.00-0.14 in beans. Comparison of the results showed that with the exception of mercury, all metals are within the tolerable ranges set by International Standard Tolerable Limits and European Regulatory Standard. Potential hazards may be speculated because the detected levels are on the higher side of the tolerable ranges. A higher level of mercury in samples collected from Zone C might be associated with the reported cases of chronic kidney diseases from those areas.

Abstract Background and Aims Around worldwide population, 10% are affected by chronic kidney diseases (CKD); hemodialysis is the common choice of renal replacement therapy. Cigarette smokers have higher Lead level than non-smoker population. As Tobacco leaves are grown on polluted soil, it is proven that Mercury poisoning depends on dose and duration of exposure. Aim of the study was to determine two important toxic heavy metals elements Lead and Mercury concentrations in regular hemodialysis patients smoker and non-smoker by comparison with normal subjects and its correlation to anemia. Method Blood samples were collected from CKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis for more than 6 months divided into non-smoker and smoker to be compared with samples from a control group of non-CKD, non-smoker persons. This study was conducted in September 2019 in Al Mokattam Insurance Hospital – Cairo and involved 60 persons of both sex. They were divided into 3 groups: CKD stage 5 patients on hemodialysis 40 patients and sub-divided into 2 groups; (smoker) 20 patients and (non-smoker) 20 patients and the history of eating fish and seafood was taken. The third group was a control group included 20 healthy non-smoker participants. Lead and Mercury were analyzed by electro thermal atomic absorption spectrophotometer in Al Borg central Laboratory. The complete blood count (CBC), kidney function tests and Iron parameters were also detected. Results duration on hemodialysis did not raise Lead or Mercury level in blood, while smoking raises Lead level in blood, and eating fish and sea food more than once per week increased Mercury level in blood. There was a relation between raised Lead level and anaemia in hemodialysis patients. Conclusion Lead Prolonged and Mercury measurement is important in hemodialysis patients with possible symptoms of heavy metal toxicity. Lead level monitoring is recommended in resistant anemia in hemodialysis patients.

AbstractHeavy metals in drinking water can threat human health and may induce several diseases. The association between heavy metals exposure and chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been indicated by few epidemiological studies. We conducted a systematic review of the epidemiologic publications of the association between exposure to heavy metals through drinking water and CKD. Keywords related to heavy metals and kidney diseases on MeSH were identified and searched in PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Ovid-Medline and Web of Science until July 2020. 14 publications met our inclusion criteria and included in the current review. The included articles were conducted on the association between arsenic, cadmium, lead and chromium in drinking water and CKD. Our study could not find strong evidence between heavy exposure to through drinking water and CKD, except for arsenic. The negative association was found between arsenic and lead and glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The positive correlation was observed between cadmium exposure and urinary N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) concentrations, and also arsenic and chromium exposure and kidney injury molecule (KIM-1). Assessment of studies showed an association between arsenic, cadmium, lead and chromium and albuminuria and proteinuria, without CKD outcomes. Current systematic study showed few evidence for exposure to arsenic, cadmium, lead and chromium through drinking water and incidence of kidney problems. However, more epidemiological studies are required to confirm this association.

The study reports on major and trace elements as well as antioxidant properties of honey samples from Bangladesh. Four major cationic elements, seven trace elements, and three heavy metals were determined in the 12 honey samples using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Nutritional values in these honey samples were further investigated according to their antioxidant properties. The content of major elements was in the range of 62.75–616.58, 579.48–2219.43, 69.42–632.25, and 0.13–1.20 mg/kg for sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, respectively. The trace elements varied in the range of 0.41–28, 0.12–3.54, 1.54–2.85, 0.29–0.59, 0.02–0.35, and 0.01–0.06 mg/kg for iron, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium, respectively. Among the heavy metals, only lead (0.17–2.19 mg/kg) was detected. The results of antioxidant analysis based on phenolics, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, and proteins (as nonphenolic antioxidants) revealed that multifloral raw honey samples contain significantly higher levels of reducing agents than monofloral and commercial brand honeys. The study provides a useful insight on the minerals, heavy metals, and antioxidant properties of honey samples commonly consumed in Bangladesh and found to be rich source of antioxidants and minerals. Some samples might pose some risk to the health due to lead contamination.

This study was based on determining concentration of essential and toxic heavy metal in coconut water available at a local Hazaribagh area in Dhaka, Bangladesh. All essential minerals, if present in the drinking water at high concentration or very low concentration, it has negative actions. In this study, fifteen samples and eight heavy metals were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) method which was followed by wet ashing digestion method. The concentration obtained in mg/l were in the range of 0.3 to 1.5, 7.77 to 21.2, 0 to 0.71, 0 to 0.9, 0 to 0.2, 0.9 to 17.3, 0.1 to 0.9, 0 to 0.9 and 0 to 0.7 for Fe, Ni, Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn, Pb and Se respectively. From this data it was concluded that any toxic heavy metals like Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni exceed their toxicity level and some essential nutrients were in low concentration in those samples.

This study was based on to determine the concentration of macro and micro nutrients as well as toxic and nontoxic heavy metals present in the chicken feed available in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. All macro nutrients, if present in the feed at high concentration have some adverse effect, at the same time if this nutrient present in the feed at low concentration this have some adverse effect too. So that this nutrient level should be maintained at a marginal level. On the other side toxic heavy metals if present in the feed at very low concentration those can contaminate the total environment of the ecosystem. In this study six brand samples (starter, grower, finisher and layer) which was collected from different renowned chicken feed formulation industry in Bangladesh. Those samples were prepared for analysis by wet ashing and then metals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. It was found that 27.7 to 68.4, 57.3 to 121.9, 0.21 to 4.1, 0.32 to 2.1, 0.11 to 1.58, 0.28 to 2.11 and 0.28 to 1.78 for zinc, iron, copper, mercury, cadmium, nickel and cobalt respectively. It was found that essential macro and micro nutrients were present in the feed in low concentration on the other side mercury was present in high concentration in the feed samples.

The paper evaluates the presence and content of traces of heavy metals Hg, Pb, Ni, Cd (total forms) from coal and solid combustion products, the degree of transfer and accessibility in the area of influence of a lignite power plant. The content of toxic heavy metals in residues are characterized by RE Meiji [ 1 (Pb and Hg) and REMeij �1 (Ni and Cd) for the filter ash. Pb and Ni content in the soil exceeds normal values, and Pb exceeds and alert value for sensitive soils around the residue deposit (70.20 mg.Kg-1). The degree of accessibility of the metals in plants (TF), reported at the Khan reference value (0.5), indicates a significant bioaccumulation level for the metals: Cd (1.9) and Hg (0.6) inside the deposit; Cd (0.39) at the base of the deposit, Hg (0.8) in the area of the thermal power plant. The trace levels of heavy metals analyzed by GFAAS and CVAAS (Hg), indicates a moderate risk potential for food safety and quality of life in the studied area.

Currently in Europe, despite the many advances in production technology of synthetic drugs, the interest in natural herbal medicines continues to increase. One of the reasons for their popular use is the assumption that natural equals safe. However, herbal medicines contain pharmacologically active ingredients, some of which have been associated with adverse effects. Kidneys are particularly susceptible to injury induced by toxins, including poisonous constituents from medicinal plants. The most recognized herb-induced kidney injury is aristolochic acid nephropathy connected with misuse of certain Traditional Chinese herbal medicines. Data concerning nephrotoxicity of plant species of European origin are scarce. Here, we critically review significant data of the nephrotoxicity of several plants used in European phytotherapy, including Artemisia herba-alba, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Euphorbia paralias, and Aloe). Causative mechanisms and factors predisposing to intoxications from the use of herbs are discussed. The basic intention of this review is to improve pharmacovigilance of herbal medicine, especially in patients with chronic kidney diseases.
