AIM: This study aims to determine the effect of adjuvant Vitamin C on brain-derived neurotropic factors (BDNF) levels and improvement of negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients. METHODS: This study was conducted at Hasanuddin University Hospital and its affiliate with 60 schizophrenic patients (30 controls, 27 treatments, and three dropout patients). The ELISA sample examination method was used to examine blood levels of BDNF, and Vitamin C levels before and after administration of Vitamin C. In addition, the negative symptoms were measured using the PANSS score. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in BDNF levels in treatments group compared the control at 4th–8th weeks with p = 0.005 (4th week) and ≤0.0001 (<0.05) (8th week). The improvement in PANSS scores for negative symptoms in the treatment groups compared to the controls at the 2nd, 4th, and 8th weeks resulted in p = 0.042 (2nd week) and <0.0001 (4th–8th weeks). Furthermore, there was an increase in serum Vitamin C levels in the treatment groups with an initial average value = 4.762 and after 8 weeks = 148.155. Strong correlation between increased BDNF levels and improvement in negative symptoms on the PANSS score was found with p = 0.001 (4th week) and ≤0.0001 (8th week). CONCLUSION: The administration of Vitamin C significantly increases BDNF levels and improves the PANSS score for negative symptoms in the treatments compared to the control groups.

AbstractPremature ejaculation (PE) is associated with decreased quality of life, lower confidence and self-esteem, and higher levels of depression, anxiety, and interpersonal difficulties. Here we investigated the effectiveness of vibrator-assisted start–stop exercises for treatment of PE, and whether the treatment effect could be enhanced by an additional psychobehavioral intervention. Fifty participants with a mean age of 41.7 years were included and randomized into two treatment groups and a waiting list control group. Participants were instructed to perform start–stop exercises while stimulating the penis with a purpose-made vibrator, 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Additionally, participants in one of the treatment groups received additional psychoeducation and performed mindfulness meditation-based body scan exercises three times a week. Data were gathered through online questionnaires before and after treatment, as well as 3 and 6 months after treatment. The interventions reduced PE symptoms with large effect sizes (partial η2 = .20 across the three groups, d [95% CI] = 1.05 [.27, 1.82] and 1.07 [.32, 1.82] for treatment groups compared to waiting list control group). The additional psychobehavioral intervention did not further reduce PE symptoms, but did decrease PE-associated negative symptoms such as levels of sexual distress, anxiety, and depression. No side effects were reported. Vibrator-assisted start–stop exercises can be offered as an adequate treatment option for PE.

The vitamin status of 13 endurance athletes was determined by whole blood (microbiological) and urine 4-pyridoxic acid (4-PA) (HPLC), serum vitamin (pyridoxal, pyridoxol, pyridoxamin) (HPLC), and erythrocyte α- EGOT measurements with the aid of 7-day records. In addition, blood and serum samples and urine were collected before (Time A), directly after (Time B), and 2 hr after a marathon race (Time C). The total energy intake was 12,303 ± 3,464 Wday (34% fat, 48% carbohydrates, 14% protein). The vitamin intake, serum concentrations, α-EGOT value, and 4-PA excretion were higher than the reference values at Time A. Only the vitamin whole blood levels were below the normal level at Time A. The vitamin B, status of the athletes corresponded essentially to reference values obtained for untrained individuals. There was a mean loss of about 1 mg vitamin as a result of the marathon race. Vitamin supplementation does not appear necessary if a balanced diet is consumed.

Drugs consumption like gentamicin caused damage and decreased of kidney function. Cassava leaf contain lots of micronutrients, such as vitamin C, vitamin A and carotenoids, which also as an antioxidant. The results of the study conducted by Almashuri proved that cassava leaf have high levels of carotenoid compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cassava leaf extract on the repairment of renal damage in mice in vivo. This research is true experimental using mice (mus musculus) and were grouped into 5 groups. Two control groups (positive and negative) and 3 treatment groups (cassava leaves 150, 300, and 450 mg / day). Gentamicin is given every day for 14 days and then observed on serum levels of creatinine along with histopathological scores of kidneys’ damage. Statistical analysis showed a significant reduction in serum levels of creatinine (P <0.05) and a significant decrease in renal histopathologic score. This study suggests that cassava leaf extract can repair kidney damage as a result gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice. Keywords: cassava leaf extract, creatinin, kidney histopathology

Summary This study examined the effect of a cryoprotectant with and without pentoxifylline supplementation on the motility and viability of human testicular sperm, both before and after freezing. Testicular samples were obtained from 68 patients with azoospermia who came to the Andrology Service of West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, for testicular biopsies from December 2019 to April 2020. All patients were assigned randomly to two groups: experimental, whose testicular sperm were added to the cryoprotectant with pentoxifylline, and the control, whose testicular sperm were added to the cryoprotectant without pentoxifylline. Both groups used the same freezing and thawing methods. Testicular sperm motility in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group, both before and after cryopreservation. The recovery rate of sperm motility in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. The percentage of samples with motile testicular sperm in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group after thawing. Sperm viability was unchanged between the experimental and control groups, both before and after freezing. Overall, a pentoxifylline-supplemented cryoprotectant can significantly improve the motility of testicular sperm before and after cryopreservation.

IntroductionThe aim of the study was to investigate the changes in serum concentrations of nine vitamins in patients undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer and explore their clinical values and influencing factors.Material and methodsPatients receiving chemotherapy for lung cancer in our centre from February 2018 to May 2020 were enrolled in this study. Serum concentrations of the nine vitamins including vitamins A, D, E, B9, B12, B1, C, B2, and B6 were measured in all subjects, and the changes in the concentrations of these vitamins were compared before and after 2 cycles of chemotherapy. In addition, the potential correlations of serum vitamin levels with age, gender, pathological type, and disease status were analysed.ResultsIn the 178 patients with lung cancer, there were different degrees of vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, and in particular, vitamin B2 deficiencies. Before chemotherapy, the concentrations of vitamin A and vitamin C were significantly different between males and females and among patients in different clinical stages (both p < 0.05), the concentrations of vitamin C and vitamin B2 significantly differed among different pathological types of lung cancer (p < 0.05), and vitamin D level was significantly related to the disease status (p < 0.05). In addition, the proportion of vitamin B2 deficiency differed significantly among different pathological types (p < 0.05). There were significant differences in the concentrations of vitamins D, C, and B2 before and after chemotherapy (all p < 0.05). There was a correlation between the change of serum vitamin B1 concentration before and after chemotherapy and the change of body mass index (p < 0.05).ConclusionsDuring chemotherapy, lung cancer patients are more likely to develop vitamins A, D, C, and B2 deficiencies. Different vitamin deficiencies are related to gender, clinical stage, pathological type, and disease status. Vitamin determination and reasonable supplementation of nutrients in patients undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer can help improve the nutritional status and increase chemotherapy tolerance.

The study was conducted to determine the effects of layers? diets containing 0, 100, 150 and 200 mg/kg vitamin C on vitamin A and C concentrations in serum of layers. A total of 80 Isa brown layers (28 weeks of age) were used in this study. There were a control and three treatment groups each containing 20 hens. The experimental period lasted 8 weeks. Serum vitamin A and vitamin C concentrations were determined twice at 32 and 36 weeks of age. Serum vitamin A and serum vitamin C concentrations increased as vitamin C supplementation increased in the diet. During the study, serum concentration of vitamin C was increased significantly (P<0.05) by the addition of 150 and 250 mg/kg vitamin C and serum concentration of vitamin A was increased significantly (P<0.01) in all treatment groups in increasing order as vitamin C supplementation increases in the diet. It has been concluded that vitamin C protected vitamin A against oxidation and increased serum vitamin A levels in parallel with increased serum vitamin C.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. Smokeless tobacco is a commonly used drug in the world. Tobacco use in any form is a rising crisis for the population in developing countries. Tobacco contributes significantly to oxidative stress induced morbidity and mortality. The study was aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation on serum cotinine, malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum vitamin C level in smokeless tobacco (ST) chewers. In addition, the study was aimed to evaluate the effect of duration of tobacco chewing on above-said parameters. A total number of 338 healthy participants of aged between 31 to 60 years were classified into two groups comprising of tobacco chewers and tobacco non-chewers. Tobacco chewers group further divided into three subgroups with respect to tobacco chewing duration. Participants were asked to take 1000 mg of vitamin C daily for 45 days. Serum cotinine, MDA and serum vitamin C were measured in all the participants before and after supplementation of vitamin C. Serum cotinine (p<0.001) and MDA (p<0.001) were significantly increased whereas serum vitamin C level (p<0.001) was significantly decreased in smokeless tobacco chewers as than to controls. However, serum cotinine (p<0.001) and MDA (p<0.001) were significantly decreased whereas vitamin C (p<0.001) level was significantly increased in both the groups after supplementation of vitamin C as compared to before. It was observed that the changes become more prominent with increased smokeless tobacco consumption duration. Daily intake of vitamin C may be beneficial to restore the oxidant-antioxidant balance in tobacco chewers.
