A study evaluated the effects of limestone sources with different solubility on the efficacy of two phytases in broilers. A 2×5 factorial arrangement was employed with two commercial limestone sources and five diet treatments; a positive control (PC) diet with 7.2 g/kg P and 9.6 g/kg Ca, and a negative control diet containing reductions of 1.87 g/kg available P, 1.99 g/kg Ca and 0.4 g/kg Na, supplemented with either Buttiauxella phytase (PhyB) or Escherichia coli phytase (PhyE) at 500 or 1000 FTU/kg diet. The two limestone sources were feed-grade commercial products with different particle sizes and solubility (fast-soluble (FS) 100%; slow-soluble (SS) 26% soluble after 30 minutes at pH 3) containing similar levels of Ca. Diets were fed to one-day-old Ross 308 males (n=2,400) with 30 birds/pen and eight pens/treatment in two phases (starter 0-10 d and grower 10-21 d). On d 21, ileal digesta was collected from 12 birds/pen to determine apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of P and Ca, and myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) disappearance, and tibias from four birds/pen for ash determination. The SS limestone improved body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and FCR vs FS limestone in starter/grower phases (P<0.05), and improved AID of P (P<0.05) and IP6 disappearance (P<0.05) at d 21. There was an interaction between limestone and phytase on BWG, FI and FCR in the grower phase (P≤0.05) whereby FS (vs SS) limestone reduced BWG at either dose of PhyE, but only at 500 FTU/kg of PhyB. At an equivalent dose, PhyB had higher BWG and feed intake than PhyE (P<0.05). At 1000 FTU/kg, performance was equivalent (BWG and FI) or superior (FCR) to the PC, PhyB produced greater tibia ash, AID of P and IP6 disappearance (P<0.05). The findings showed that the effects of limestone particle size on phytase efficacy varied with phytase source and dose.

The bio-efficacy of Escherichia coli-derived phytase produced by thermo-protective coating technology (coated phytase) was evaluated in mash or pelleted broiler diets. Three hundred and twenty-four broilers were divided into 54 groups of six birds and fed nine corn-based diets (six replicates per diet) from 1 to 22 d of age. The nine diets were a positive control (PC) (calcium, 0.9% and non-phytate phosphorus, 0.45%) fed as mash plus 2 × 4 factorial of a negative control (calcium, 0.78% and non-phytate phosphorus, 0.26%) fed as mash (NC-M) or pellet (NC-P) and with coated phytase at 0, 500, 600 or 700 FTU kg-1. The diets were pelleted at 80°C, and pressure load of 40 psi. Body weight gain (BWG) for the PC diet was higher (P < 0.001) than that for the NC-M or NC-P diet. The BWG and tibia ash were linearly increased (P < 0.001) by increased level of the phytase in NC-M or NC-P diet. The BWG for NC-M or NC-P diet reached that of the PC diet when phytase was supplemented at 600 or 700 FTU kg-1. In conclusion, the coated phytase improved nutrient utilization in broilers, and its bio-efficacy was unaffected by the pelleting process.

SummaryThe following trial was conducted to investigate the effects of Se source (inorganic sodium selenite (SS) versus organic use Sel-Plex® (SP; Alltech Inc, Nicholasville, KY, USA)) on the performance, feathering and meat quality of 900, one-day-old male broilers over a 42 day growing period. Pens (n = 20) were randomly assigned to either: Diet A (no Se; negative control), Diet B as for diet A plus 0.3 mg/kg SS (positive control), Diet C as for diet A plus 0.2 mg/kg SP, Diet D as for diet A plus 0.3 mg/kg SP and Diet E as for diet A plus 0.4 mg/kg SP. From day 1 to 28, significant (P < 0.05) treatment effects were seen for feed intake and FCR, with values for the negative control being higher than for the diets containing Se. The best FCR was recorded for the diet containing 0.4 mg/kg SP. Breast meat yield for birds fed the negative control were lower than those fed selenite or SP supplemented diets (P < 0.05). Feather measurements on d 14, 28 and 42 of age showed that, although scores became poorer with age (4.9 at 14 d, 4.6 at 28 d and 3.6 at 42 d), they were unaffected (P > 0.05) by dietary Se inclusion. Numeric trends in favour of SP were seen in cooking losses in meat chilled for 24 hours and seven days. Cooking losses in meat frozen for seven days were significantly influenced by Se inclusion, whereby values for birds fed 0.3 and 0.4 mg/kg SP were significantly lower than values for birds fed inorganic selenite (P < 0.05). Tissue Se concentrations were highest for the SP diets. Meat oxidation from the birds fed SP was lower than for the birds fed no Se or SS. The results demonstrated that SP may be more advantageous in improving certain variables of performance and meat quality compared to inorganic sources of Se.

Phytase produced by Escherichia coli was fed to broiler chicks fed graded levels of available phosphorus (0.25–45%). A positive control involved Natuphos® a fungal phytase commonly used in poultry nutrition. Feeding diets with only 0.25% available phosphorus from 1 to 13 d of age resulted in reduced feed intake and weight gain, with associated loss in tibia weight, tibia ash and tibia phosphorus content (P < 0.01). Adding 600 IU phytase kg−1 diet corrected these problems, and both sources were equally efficacious for most parameters studied. Key words: Phosphorus, phytase, chicken

Although phytase has been researched, new enzymes have been produced, leading to different animal responses. In this scenario, the present study proposes to evaluate the inclusion of a bacterial phytase produced by Escherichia coli in broiler diets based on corn and soybean meal, with or without nutrient reductions, on the performance, nutrient digestibility, phosphorus bioavailability, and bone minerals of those animals and on the economic viability of this practice. A total of 896 male broiler chickens were distributed into 32 experimental units, each housing 28 broilers. The experiment was set up as a completely randomized design with four treatments (Positive Control (PC)- diet meeting the nutritional requirements of the broiler chickens; Negative Control (NC) with reductions of 100kcal/kg of ME, 0.14% avP and 0.11% tCa; NC + phytase (500 FTU/kg); PC + phytase (500FTU/kg)) and 8 replicates. Phytase increased (p < 0.05) feed intake and body weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio in starter (1 to 21 days) and total (1 to 42 days) phases, respectively, compared with Negative Control diet without supplementation. The Negative Control + phytase diet also led to a feed intake similar to Positive Control in the starter and total phases. The inclusion of phytase without nutrient reductions improved (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio in the starter phase, compared to Positive Control diet. There was an increase (p < 0.05) in the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and phosphorus and in apparent digestible energy in the Negative Control + phytase diet compared to the Negative Control diet. Phytase supplementation increased (p < 0.05) the digestibility of crude protein, calcium and phosphorus, and apparent digestible energy compared to Positive Control diet. Ash, phosphorus, and calcium contents were higher in the Negative Control + phytase diet compared with those observed in the Negative Control diet without enzyme (p < 0.05). The Positive Control + phytase diet provided higher ash contents (p < 0.05), but calcium and phosphorus deposition was similar to those obtained with Positive Control diet. Phytase inclusion allows for a reduction in the diet cost per ton of produced feed. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with bacterial phytase produced from Escherichia coli for broiler chickens is recommended, as it provided increases in production performance, nutrient digestibility, and energy metabolizability and a reduction in the diet cost.

This work examined the effects of incorporation of exogenous enzyme preparation on growth and performance traits in broilers fed diet containing 400 g/Kg of L. angustifolius(cv. Arabella) of Europe and L. angustifolius (cv. Kalya) obtained from Australia. A maize- soy (MS) based diet served as a control diet and acted as positive, while non-protein control diet acted as a negative control (NPC) and fed ad libitum for 18 days. Growth rate, apparent digestibility of N, fat and excretion of essential minerals were assessed. In comparison to broilers fed maize-soy (MS) diet, broilers fed the L. angustifolius  of European origin (EL) diet, consumed less feed, had considerably lower body weight gain, as well as lower apparent digestibility. Addition of Rena phytase to the EL (ELPH) and L. angustifolius of Australian origin (ALPH) increased feed intake, however, the feed gain ratio was found to be decreased. . This study indicates that a diet containing high level of lupin meal is detrimental to feed intake broilers and thus affected their performance. However, when lupin meal diet was supplemented with Rena phytase, performance parameters were not different from those obtained from raw meal. The inclusion of lupin meal with or without exogenous enzyme had significant effect on the mineral content of the faeces and on mineral balance. The results suggest that lupin protrein is involved in the elevated loss of minerals associated with long-term effects of this seed as protein source in poultry. Compared to those of control, the N excretion was in the range of 14.9% (EL), 15.6% (ELPH) and 13.9% (ALPH). On the other hand, digestibility was found to be in the range of 78% (EL) and 73% (ELPH) than the corresponding control fed on (MS) diet. The fat excretion was found to be highest in (ALPH) fed diet 19.1% as compared to those of control. True fat digestibility was found to be at the lowest level n ALPH group. The present work has revealed a very remarkable property of L. angustifolius of Australian lupin, that has caused high level of fat excretion in the droppings of broilers fed this as compared to those of its European counterpart. It is highly likely that Australian lupin due to its gel forming character may have caused this kind of response in fecal lipid excretion.Bang. J. Anim. Sci. 2017. 46 (4): 266-272

Abstract A total of 355 pigs (DNA 200x400; initially 5.6 kg) were used to evaluate the effects of coarse wheat bran and crude protein (CP) level in diets without pharmacological levels of zinc oxide on nursery pig performance and fecal dry matter (DM%). Pigs were allotted to 1 of 6 treatments in a completely randomized design with 5 pigs per pen and 12 pens per treatment. Treatment diets were fed in two phases (d 0 to 7 and 7 to 21) followed by a common diet fed d 21 to 45. Treatments included a positive control diet with ZnO, negative control without ZnO, and negative control with 4% wheat bran and formulated to contain 21, 19.5, 18, or 16.5% CP. All diets contained 1.35% SID lysine except the 18 and 16.5% (1.25 and 1.20% lysine) CP diets. Data were analyzed using the lmer function from the lme4 package in R. During the experimental period, decreasing CP decreased (linear, P&lt; 0.05) ADG, G:F, and d 21 BW, but increased (linear, P=0.005) fecal DM%. Pigs fed the diet containing ZnO had increased (P&lt; 0.050) ADG, ADFI, and G:F compared to the negative control and diet with 21% CP and wheat bran. From d 21 to 45, pigs previously fed the 21% CP diet with wheat bran had increased (P&lt; 0.05) ADG compared to the positive control. Fecal DM on d 45 and G:F increased (P&lt; 0.05) for pigs fed the 21% CP, wheat bran diet and negative control compared to those fed the positive control. Overall, pigs fed low CP diets had decreased (P&lt; 0.05) ADG while pigs fed the positive control had greater (P&lt; 0.05) ADG compared to the negative control. Additional research is needed to determine if modifying low CP, wheat bran diets will elicit benefits of increased fecal DM% while maintaining growth performance.

In 6 trials with 460 pigs, initially about 19 kg the threonine requirement for growth between about 20 to 40 kg was investigated. To a negative control diet, containing crude protein 160 g and threonine 5.6 g/kg. L-threonine 0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g/kg, was added and compared with a positive control diet with crude protein 185 g/kg and threonine 6.8 g/kg. The negative control diet was supplemented with lysine, methionine, tryptophan, isoleucine, histidine and valine so that no other amino acids than threonine were limiting. The positive control diet was supplemented with lysine and methionine. The experimental diets were fed ad libitum as pellets. In 2 separate trials, the apparent faecal and ileal digestibility of the amino acids of the 2 control diets was estimated. The requirement for total threonine was 7.1 g/kg for maximum weight gain, and 7.4 g/kg for maximum efficiency of feed utilization in a diet containing net energy 2290 kcal/kg. These results correspond with 6.2 and 6.5 g/kg faecal digestible and 5.7 and 6.0 g/kg ileal digestible threonine, respectively. Pig performance on the negative control diet supplemented with the first limiting amino acids, was similar to that of the positive control diet. Ross 308 broiler chicks (n = 240) aged 1 day were assigned to five groups for eight replicates (six chicks for each) (3♂ and 3♀). Basal dietary groups were supplemented by 2000, 4000, and 6000 mg/kg cinnamon (CN) for 21 days. Basal diet alone was used as a negative control, and basal antibiotic diet (Colimox) was used as a positive control. At 10, 14, and 21 days of age, chicks that received 2000 mg CN and Colimox had a higher body weight, resulting in an increase in body weight gain. CN also resulted in the maximum improvement in the feed conversion ratio and feed efficiency over 1–21 days at the level of 2000 mg/kg. At days 10, the maximum relative breast weight was 2000 mg/kg of CN. Mean serum albumin concentrations, duodenal villus height, and goblet cell density increased (p < 0.05) by 2000 mg/kg of CN, and mean serum globulin and total protein concentrations and crypt depth increased (p < 0.05) by 6000 mg/kg of CN compared with control. Increased cecal Escherichia coli number was CN dose-dependent. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of 2000 mg/kg CN can be applied as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics for broiler starter diet.

This study was conducted to investigate the antipyretic effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Corchorus depressus Linn. against Escherichia coli ( E. coli)-induced pyrexia in rabbits. Hydroalcohalic extracts of C. depressus were given orally at 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg for antipyretic affect in E. coli-induced fever in rabbits. The animals were divided into five groups of five each. Among these five groups, three received various doses of experimental treatments, whereas the fourth one served as positive control and received paracetamol. The fifth group of animals served as negative control and received no treatment. The body temperature of the rabbits was measured rectally over a period of 5 h. C. depressus exhibited better effects at dose rate of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg. The hydroalcoholic extract of C. depressus has significant antipyretic effect. These results lend support to the popular use of C. depressus in traditional medicine as a remedy for pyrexia and suggest that the characterization of the principles for such activity deserves further investigation.

Three groundnut meals namely: groundnut cake (GNC), locally processed groundnut cake (kulikuli) and toasted groundnut seed(kernel) meal (TGSM) were incorporated in rabbit diets at two levels to generate six diets: 18% GNC, 22% GNC, 18% Kulikuli, 22% Kulikuli, 18% TGSM and 22% TGSM respectively, and 18% GNC also served as the control diet. Twenty four (24) six weeks-old growing rabbits of mixed breeds and sexes with mean initial weight of 568.75±l2.85g were randomly allocated to the six dietary treatment groups, such that each had four rabbits and each rabbit formed a replicate in a completely randomized design laid out in a 2X3 factorial arrangement and fed ad libitum, for 70 days. The main effects showed that while the treatment groups fed TGSM were significantly depressed (p<0.05). rabbits fed GNC and kulikuli were not significantly different (p>0.05) for average daily feed intake, daily body weight gain and final body weight. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was not significantly (p >0.05) affected among treatment groups. Rabbits fed TGSM had significantly (p<0.05) better apparent digestibility coefficient (78.04%) than those on kulikuli (75.81%6) and the group on kulikuli were better than animals fed GNC (72.09%) for fat digestibility. Fibre digestibility was also significantly different (p <0.05), with rabbits fed kulikuli having the poorest fibre digestion (15.63 %). Crude protein, dry matter and NFE apparent digestibility coefficients were not significantly (p >0.05) affected. Among all the parameters measured, only fat and fibre digestibility coefficients had significant (p <0.05) interactions and NFE digestibility was significantly affected (p <0.05) by level of inclusion, with groups fed 22% digesting it better. Feed cost kg gain did not differ significantly (p >0.05) among the treatment groups. Growth was still on the rise and there was a significantly (P<0.01) strong relationship (correlation and regression) between feed intake and weight gain for all the treatment groups. was concluded that both kulikuli and TGSM are potential feed resources for rabbits, more available to house hold farmers, equally economical as GNC and better still if groundnut farmers and or processors of kulikuli raise rabbits, though TGSM had less value for growth rate compared to GNC and Kulikuli at these levels of inclusion
