Smart homes have been predominantly pointed as one of the key constituents of intelligent environments. These are residential units substantially integrated with a communicating network of sensors and intelligent systems based on the application of new design initiatives and creative technologies. This study provides a holistic overview on the essence of smart homes besides demonstrating their current status, benefits and future directions. The study reveals that smart homes embrace significant potentials towards achieving comfort, security, independent lifestyle and enhanced quality of life. Findings urge the necessity to focus on further exploration of the social and environmental benefits derived from the application of creative technologies in smart homes. The study concludes that smart homes play a fundamental role in shaping the future cities. Finally, the study identifies a research gap indicating that there has been less consideration towards linking the fundamental potentials of smart homes to the overall performance and key indicators of smart cities.

This article shows that the deployment of modern high-tech companies in the regions affects the development of smart cities. In particular, it was noted that high-tech companies not only create high-tech products, but also are an example of optimization of management processes, economical consumption of various types of resources, and also serve as one of the factors for the accumulation of intellectual capital and the quality of life of the population in the regions. It is shown that modern advanced technologies of a smart city affect not only the social aspects of the region’s development, serve to improve its legislative, managerial and social foundations, but also encourage megacities to solve the problems of efficient use of the environment.

Trends in the world population are shown to favor the increase market of elderly people aged 65 and over. This creates a new and promising market with many peculiarities and a variety of needs to be satisfied in terms of improving quality of life. The proposed solution to this problem which is investigated in this paper comes from technology. Especially, smart phone technology can lead to the creation of innovative products and services facilitating the elderly in their daily lives. The purpose of this study is to explore how a smart phone application (Active Ageing), could upgrade the quality of life of the elderly people and how to motivate them by making them feel safe and comfortable to go out for a walk. Further, the proposed app development takes a stakeholder’s approach where the society, the state, local actors and private investors, are involved. In this way opportunities can be seized and be a deterministic factor in this new market with many economic, social and environmental benefits. At the same time, the study examines the conceptual framework of an innovative business model which will contribute to the sustainable development of the application in the Greek society by taking a social entrepreneurship approach. Going through a critical literature review in relation to Active Ageing, the benefits and risks of walking, social entrepreneurship, market research methods and smart cities, an appropriate survey instrument was developed for evaluating the potential of the envisioned Active Aging app. Elements in the survey examined key issues that concern the elderly. Specifically, market needs have been identified regarding the necessary information to create confidence, safety, enjoyment and high quality of life in a framework of sustainable mobility.

AbstractTechnological innovations in healthcare, perhaps now more than ever, are posing decisive opportunities for improvements in diagnostics, treatment, and overall quality of life. The use of artificial intelligence and big data processing, in particular, stands to revolutionize healthcare systems as we once knew them. But what effect do these technologies have on human agency and moral responsibility in healthcare? How can patients, practitioners, and the general public best respond to potential obscurities in responsibility? In this paper, I investigate the social and ethical challenges arising with newfound medical technologies, specifically the ways in which artificially intelligent systems may be threatening moral responsibility in the delivery of healthcare. I argue that if our ability to locate responsibility becomes threatened, we are left with a difficult choice of trade-offs. In short, it might seem that we should exercise extreme caution or even restraint in our use of state-of-the-art systems, but thereby lose out on such benefits as improved quality of care. Alternatively, we could embrace novel healthcare technologies but in doing so we might need to loosen our commitment to locating moral responsibility when patients come to harm; for even if harms are fewer – say, as a result of data-driven diagnostics – it may be unclear who or what is responsible when things go wrong. What is clear, at least, is that the shift toward artificial intelligence and big data calls for significant revisions in expectations on how, if at all, we might locate notions of responsibility in emerging models of healthcare.

Psychosocial interventions have been found to have similar outcomes as pharmacological interventions for people with dementia (PWD). Cognitive stimulation has been found to benefit cognition and there is evidence of self-reported quality of life (QOL) and wellbeing improvement in this population. However, little research has been carried out in exploring the association between QOL and computer-assisted exergaming in PWD. This study explored if a programme of computer-assisted exergaming interventions, utilising exergaming technology (Able-X), as an adjunct to existing activities and treatments, could deliver improvements in QOL, including cognitive and physical function for 10 people diagnosed with dementia. An ontological approach of social pragmatism, combined with interpretive epistemology, within a collective convergent parallel case study (CS) methodological design was used. The study was carried out in three aged care residential units in New Zealand (NZ) that catered for people with dementia. As far as possible the principle of errorless learning (EL) (Terrace, 1963) was applied to the gaming environment when utilising the Able-X gaming interface, which was not entirely errorless. EL is based on the principle that it is difficult for people with impaired memory to remember and correct errors made while trying to learn or relearn something. Pre-and post-gaming qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with lead care staff and the next of kin for each participant, health record review, observation of video footage of the gaming experiences and computer-generated exergaming scores. In addition, several quantitative measures were used: Mini-Mental State Examination-2-BV, Global Deterioration Scale, Functional Assessment Staging Test, Quality of Life–AD, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia and the Rating Scale for Anxiety in Dementia. Data were generated over a 10-month period (excluding postscript comments). Data triangulation included application of the theoretical framework of ‘embodied selfhood’ (Kontos, 2003, 2004) to demonstrate participants’ agency through intentionality of individualistic bodily movements, gestures and a sentient affinity with the social environment, and through habitus of the social relational body that implicitly understands the socio-cultural ways of being-in-the-world. The analysis revealed five emergent themes and six novel concepts that lend themselves to further inquiry. The first three themes: ‘Sentient interaction with the social gaming environment’, ‘Initiation and gaming advancement in partnership’, and ‘Levels of gaming intentionality’, focused on the gaming environment, including gaming initiation, engagement and progress. The other two themes: ‘Hand-eye coordination’ and ‘Aspects of QOL’, evidenced the similarities and differences across each case in terms of the main findings. The key findings were significant improvements in hand-eye coordination, global QOL, and anxiety levels. Furthermore, cognitive scores improved for five participants and depression scores for seven participants, however, these improvements were not significant. In addition, there was qualitative evidence of enhanced motivation to re-engage in psychosocial social activities for all participants, improved behavioural symptoms of dementia for nine participants, enhanced communication for nine participants and enhanced functioning of skills relating to activities of daily living tasks for seven participants. This study demonstrated that improved hand-eye coordination and overall QOL were the results of computer-assisted exergaming with Able-X and EL strategies. Irrespective of the stage of dementia, significant benefits can be achieved through either solo or small group facilitated exergaming sessions.

All around the world, taking stock of buildings older than 1970, when the first energy efficiency arose, is an important one. Today, all urban agglomerations confront themselves with environmental problems generated by air pollution, cars, and buildings, vie for the first place as the highest polluters. In the future, cities will become increasingly populated, and as a result these problems will more and more affect the quality of life. A way to prevent this scenario is a gradual transition to smart cities. In this approach, smart houses will become indispensable. In order to maintain unaltered cities' specificity, the only acceptable solution is to retrofit old buildings, especially of those classified as historical monuments or as iconic buildings. By retrofitting these buildings, they could be prepared for integration in future cities.

One of the main reasons for using counsulting in an organization is the expected positive economic effect, because the client is interested in the quality of the result, and not the process of counseling. However, it should be borne in mind, that the result, obtained from the implementation of the consulting project, can be influenced not only by the consultant, but also by the client himself. In assessing the quality of counseling, the following factors are taken into account: the macro and microenvironment and the specific situation in the organization itself; qualification, personal experience, goals and motivations, personal qualities of the consultant; experience, worldview, personal qualities of the client. In the article, to evaluate the effectiveness of management consulting, it was proposed to apply a system of key indicators for assessing the effectiveness of the social aspect of management counseling. The advantage of using proposed in the article’s key performance indicators are: the presence of a systematic approach to the analysis of the activities, because it uses indicators, that reflect the key factors in increasing the efficiency of management; during the analysis the dynamics and changes in key indicators are evaluated, which allows analyzing both effective and unprofitable organizations from a unified position; the methodology assumes calculation of various indicators: natural and cost, qualitative and quantitative. This methodology allows any organization to really assess the effectiveness of management consulting and its impact on the management of production and financial activities.

Measurement of household endowment with durables is crucial in many aspects of assessing the social and economic situation of a country and its citizens. The demand (sales) for durables is regarded as one of the key indicators of economic conditions. Similarly, analysis and evaluation of household durable goods are usually considered in the context of measuring the quality of life. The possession of durables is measured by means of the number and quality of goods in households. Measurement of household endowment is conducted usually by means of weak measurement scales, namely nominal and ordinal. Such data require the use of specialised tools for analysis and modelling. This study discusses the possibilities of statistical analysis of such data. Additionally, modelling and problems of inference on the basis of obtained results are discussed.
