The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of quality in university governance in Indonesia. The researcher designed this study with an approach of qualitative research approach with Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method. Participants come from 25 universities throughout Indonesia. Participants are leaders of higher education ranging from the head of the study program to the rector. The result of the focus group discussion shows that the quality of higher education will decrease if there is the scarcity of qualified lecturers. Declining quality of higher education will affect the number of students. Finally, if the student decline happens continuously, then higher education can close. So quality is a top priority in university governance.

This qualitative study aimed to present baseline information about the academic and social experiences of the foreign students at the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). The researchers conducted a focus group discussion involving 15 of them who are currently enrolled in various programs of the university. Through an in-depth interview, it was found that most of the foreign students have known UIC via a recommendation of a friend, or the internet. Findings revealed that the existence of the foreign students in UIC is characterized both by pleasant and unpleasant experiences. The positive feedback about the UIC educational system opens a possibility for more influx of foreign students while the unpleasant experiences pose dramatic amendments in established policies of the university.

In Malaysia, waqf management including those in universities, is under the authority of the State Islamic Religious Council as a sole trustee waqf. This is to protect the waqf assets from any interventions by the heirs. Even so, one Malaysian university is said to manage the waqf scheme without the supervision of the Islamic Council which contradict with the provision of the State of Islamic Religious Council (SIRC) as the sole trustee of waqf. Thus, this study explores the management of waqf by several universities in Selangor and relation to SIRC as the sole trustee of waqf. A qualitative research approach was employed to collect data from focus group discussions and interviews with selected participants from the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Selangor IRC), selected universities and waqf experts in Malaysia. The findings show that University Kebangsaan Malaysia and University Putra Malaysia waqf funds are managed under the Selangor IRC monitoring while University Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia endowment or waqf fund is managed privately by the university. The impact of this is that several waqf management issues arose. Hence, the authors recommend the Model theory of al-wilayah to be applied in the management of waqf in the universities. Through this model, SIRC and the university can play a more significant role in the management of waqf, thereby promoting the development of waqf in Malaysia.

Slow tourism is an eminent concept that aims to embolden extended tourist stay within a destination. The current study adopts qualitative research approach and extracts data from purposefully selected tourism professionals. The researcher employed both interview and focus group discussion to collect data required for this study. Findings of the current study unfold that slow tourism as a unique approach augments the overall tourism activities, mainly within emerging destinations. Even though slow tourism has received limited attention in Bahir Dar and its surroundings, it is quite substantive to discourage the negative economic, sociocultural and environmental impacts of tourism. However, absence of developed tourism infrastructures and limited understanding of stakeholders restrain the practice and development of slow tourism in the study area. In terms of policy references, the present study suggests that there is a need to develop a practical guideline to inculcate the fundamental concepts related to the practical applications of slow tourism in emerging destinations.

The legislative members are active and creative individuals, having their world, and different from other individuals outside the legislative members. Therefore, qualitative research method with case study approach is considered relevant to reveal the phenomenon. The object of the research comprises the legislative members determined purposively. The data were collected through participation observation, interview, documentation study, and focus group discussion. The results of research show that the community aspirations often face the interest of political party of the legislative members. The legislative members should be able to harmonize these two different interests. The study examines the role of Enashma traditional conflict resolution mechanism in handling conflict to maintain peace and stability. To realize the intended objectives, the study utilized case-study research approach with qualitative research method and the data were collected using observation, interview, focused-group discussion and document analysis. The data collected were analyzed and interpreted through word description and narration. According to the data obtained from the interview and focus group discussion, Enashma traditional conflict resolution mechanism has several advantages over the state law. Some of the advantages are restorative capacity, accessibility, revealing crime committed without witness and its acceptability. Paradoxically, the exclusion of women in the system, no standardized mechanism to fix payment of compensation for different conflicts, lack of supportive and strengthening measures from the government and lack of office for local elders are the major weakness of the institution as the information obtained from key informants. Therefore, the study recommended that all the stakeholders should be responsible tosolve the weakness of Enashma traditional conflict resolution mechanism in the study area.

One question many ask in qualitative research is “Am I doing this right?” In her new book, Focus Group Discussions: Understanding Qualitative Research, Monique Hennink expertly shares with the reader suggestions and pitfalls of conducting focus group discussions. She shares these ideas and suggestions through conversation, research and anecdotal stories demonstrating the types of situations that one could experience when conducting a focus group discussion. Hennink dedicates a portion of the book to the importance of a robust methods discussion in supporting one’s write-up; as well as guidelines for writing-up research and assessing others published work (validity, reliability, credibility). Newcomers to this research method will find techniques to make improvements in focus group discussions both in the academic environment and the corporate world. This book has something for everyone.
