Critical Friends Group and Its Impact on Teachers and the Learning Process

This chapter investigates the perceptions, experiences and learning of native and non-native EFL teachers towards in-service teacher education (INSET) through critical friend group (CFG) in a language preparatory program, at a private high school in the western part of Turkey. Specifically, the study identifies the specific aspects of CFG which might enhance teacher-learning and finally, better understand their perceptions towards reflective practice. The participants were four EFL teachers offering English lessons in a preparatory class at the high school. Data were collected through interviews, video recordings, and reflective essays. The findings revealed that participating in CFG has promoted teacher-learning through collaboration as it became the vehicle that facilitated teachers to alter their classroom practices, which in return, supported the learning process in their classrooms.

This paper discusses the process of forming a habit of religious culture in some islamic private high school in Banyumas Regency, namely: Al Irsyad Al Islamiyah, Muhammadiyah 1 of Purwokerto, and Ma’arif NU of Sokaraja. The planting of a habit of religious culture was practiced by each high school based on its mainstream of religious culture in each school. The planting of religious cultural habits in the schools were applied through: classroom learning process, the development of PAI curriculum, school autonomy, human resources development, outdoor activities. In forming the habits of religious culture in each school, there were some differences of subcultures in each school, and it could be analyzed using curriculum and habits theories, which include habits, field, social capital, and doxa.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the learning process and to analyze the problem of learning chemistry in senior high school. The approach used in this study was a qualitative approach. This mini research was conducted at Eria Medan Private Senior High School in 2017. Research subjects were selected by purposive sampling of 35 Mathematic and Natural Science 1, students grade XI. Data were collected and recorded using observation sheet to measure teacher activities. Students responses were obtained using a questionnaire. The result identified some problems that may inhibit the learning process. Only 37,14 % students were happy to complete or practice with questions and 42.85% of students are actively involved in the learning process. In addition, 80% of students stated that the chemistry books used were less interesting and only 20% of students stated their chemistry book was interesting to read.This study also found that there are misconceptions in teaching concept in the subject of chemical equilibrium.

The purpose of this exploratory case study is to investigate the use of authentic materials through Critical Friends Groups (CFG) in a language preparatory program, at a private university in Turkey. Specifically, the study attempted to identify the perceptions and observed behaviours of native and non-native EFL instructors on the use of authentic materials, find out the potential reasons behind the implementation of authentic materials in their classroom practices and finally, examine the influence of incorporating authentic materials through CFG on classrooms practices as well as teachers’ professional development. The participants were eight EFL instructors offering English courses in the exiting preparatory program. Data were collected through interviews, lesson observations and reflective essays. The findings revealed that participating in CFG has transformational impact on instructors regarding their classroom practices as well as on their continuous professional development.

Beberapa faktor penting dalam peningkatan mutu tersebut di antaranya adalah penerapan budaya sekolah yang positif dan berkesinambungan. Budaya sekolah yang positif tentunya harus dipertahankan dan dilaksanakan oleh semua warga sekolah tanpa terkecuali dan tidak merasa terpaksa. Dalam menerapkan budaya sekolah perlu sikap kesadaran dari semua warga sekolah secara bersama-sama. Salah satu budaya sekolah yang harus dipertahankan adalah kedisiplinan, kedisiplinan guru dalam kehadiran di kelas pada proses belajar mengajar. Untuk  meningkatkan  disiplin  para  guru  dapat  diupayakan  melalui  bermacam-macam cara. Dalam Penelitian Tindakan Sekolah (PTS) ini, dicobakan tindakan berupa penerapan Reward and Punishment bagi para guru di SMA Swasta Manarul Islam, Kabupaten Aceh Tamiang. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus, karena dari hasil penelitian dan analisa data, ternyata pada siklus kedua, kedisiplinan guru, dalam kehadiran di kelas pada proses belajar mengajar meningkat dan memenuhi indikator yang telah ditetapkan sebesar 80%. Dari hasil penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa untuk meningkatkan disiplin guru dalam kehadiran di kelas pada kegiatan belajar mengajar dapat dilakukan dengan penerapan Reward and Punishment kepada guru.Kata Kunci: Disiplin Guru, Reward and Punishment. Abstract: The objective of this study was to improve teacher’s discipline in teaching attendance in class through the application of reward and punishment at the Manarul Islam Private High School, Aceh Tamiang Regency, as an effort to improve the quality of learning in school. Some important factors in improving the quality was the implementation of a positive and sustainable school’s culture. A positive school’s culture must be maintained and implemented by all school members without exception and do not feel forced. In implementing school’s culture, it is necessary to have an attitude of awareness from all school members. One of the school’s cultures that must be maintained is discipline that was teachers’ discipline in class attendance in the teaching and learning process. To improve the discipline of teachers, it can be acted in various ways. In this School Action Research, tried to study by applying Reward and Punishment for teachers at Manarul Islam Private High School, Aceh Tamiang Regency. This research was conducted in two cycles, the results of research and data analysis, it turned out in the second cycle, teacher’s discipline, in class attendance in the teaching and learning process increased and met the predetermined indicators of 80%. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that to improve teacher’s discipline in class attendance in teaching and learning activities can be done by applying Reward and Punishment to teachers.Keywords: Teacher Discipline, Reward and Punishment

Laboratorium diperlukan sebagai tempat belajar untuk memberikan pengalaman nyata kepada siswa sebagai salah satu faktor pendukung pelaksanaan pembelajaran. Kegiatan laboratorium tidak hanya bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman teoritis, tetapi siswa dapat menemukan dan membangun pengetahuan mereka sendiri. Penelitian ini menganalisis kontribusi manajemen laboratorium dan motivasi belajar siswa bersama-sama terhadap efektivitas proses pembelajaran kimia di SMA Kota Jambi dan Muara Jambi. Metode penelitian ini adalah metode survei dengan pendekatan kuantitatif terhadap tiga SMA Negeri dan satu SMA Swasta di Jambi dan Muaro Jambi dengan sampel 100 siswa. Instrumen berupa lembar observasi dan kuesioner dengan skala Likert. Teknik analisis korelasi yang digunakan adalah Korelasi Pearson. Hasil penelitian di tiga SMA Negeri dan satu SMA Swasta di Kota Jambi dan Kabupaten Muaro Jambi menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Manajemen laboratorium tidak cukup baik; 2) Motivasi siswa kriteria baik; 3) Efektivitas proses pembelajaran kimia bukanlah kriteria yang baik; 4) Kontribusi manajemen laboratorium terhadap efektivitas proses pembelajaran menunjukkan tingkat kontribusi yang rendah; 5). Kontribusi motivasi belajar siswa terhadap efektivitas proses pembelajaran menunjukkan tingkat kontribusi yang tinggi; 6) Kontribusi manajemen laboratorium sains dan motivasi belajar siswa terhadap efektivitas proses pembelajaran menunjukkan tingkat kontribusi yang rendah.   Laboratories are needed as a place to learn to provide real experience to students as one of the supporting factors of learning implementation. Laboratory activities not only aim to improve theoretical understanding, but students can discover and build their own knowledge. This study analyzed the contribution of laboratory management and student learning motivation together to the effectiveness of chemistry learning process in SMA Kota Jambi and Muara Jambi. This research method is survey method with quantitative approach to 3 SMA Negeri and 1 Private High School in Jambi and Muaro Jambi with sample 100 students. Instruments in the form of observation sheets and questionnaires with Likert scale. Correlation analysis technique used is Personal Product Moment Correlation. Research results in 3 State Senior High School and 1 Private High School in Jambi City and Muaro Jambi Regency indicate that: 1) Laboratory management is not good enough; 2) Student motivation good criteria; 3) The effectiveness of chemical learning process is not good criteria; 4) The contribution of laboratory management to the effectiveness of the learning process shows a low contribution level; 5). The contribution of students' learning motivation to the effectiveness of the learning process shows a high contribution level; 6) The contribution of science laboratory management and students' learning motivation to the effectiveness of the learning process shows a low contribution level

Each school has criteria or benchmarks used to determine the final results of the learning process that has been carried out. Student learning achievement is one input or output from the school. So great is the effect of learning achievement on schools and the environment that students need to develop themselves in achieving achievement. Students are expected to have motivation in learning and improve achievement for the advancement of themselves and their environment. Self-efficacy has a role in giving a confidence or confidence to students in carrying out the task and obtain the expected results. Confidence and confidence need to be instilled in students in order to develop their abilities and be responsible for the tasks assigned to them, and obtain results according to ability. This research, reveals a description of students' understanding in carrying out learning / academic assignments so as to prepare for the future and achieve the expected goals. The number of research subjects amounted to 162 people, as students of class XI Bekasi City Private High School. The results showed 98.8% of 162 students realized that success or success could be achieved with diligent effort, 95.7% of students tried to obtain achievements to achieve their goals, 98.8% of students tried to make the assignment given by the teacher can be completed on time, 85.8% of students have the confidence to complete the task and face difficulties in completing the task (80.2%). The level of self-understanding of Class XI High School Bekasi Private School students mostly acknowledges that success or success can be achieved with diligent effort, obtaining achievements that support the achievement of ideals, as well as having confidence in completing tasks while facing difficulties

Abstract Teacher’s self evaluation is  a way to guide teachers in identifying strengths and weaknesses in learning. Improving teacher’s professionalism started by recognizing and realizing the weaknesses in learning, and by a willingness to enhance self competence. This article is a result of a research that examined four domains that affect students achievement, namely the strategies and teacher’s behavior in learning, planning and preparation done before learning, reflection on learning, and collegiality that supported teacher professionalism. This study aims at describing the strengths and weaknesses of teacher’s in Arabic learning process, and describing the need for teachers to increase professionalism in teaching. The data was obtained by an instrument in form of a questionnaire of teacher’s self evaluation. Respondents consisted of Arabic teacher senior high school of the MAN 3 Rawasari. The instrument used has been validated. The result showed that most of the teachers carried out most of the components contained in the strategies and teaching behaviors and implemented teaching planning and preparation. In teaching planning and in learning process, however, teacher colleagues were still rarely involved for professional development. Reflection on the learning process and planning is rarely conducted jointly with colleagues. For further improvement of teacher learning, more intensive discussion with colleagues, principals, and supervisors are required. Besides, teachers can observe teaching process of other teachers, obtain feedback on learning not only from colleagues but also from principals and supervisors, and coaching done by the principal or learning expert. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of audio visual media on the interest of learning biology of students on plantae material in the class X Private High School Amal Bakti Medan in the 2016/2017 academic year. The type of this research is descriptive research. The subject of this research is the students of grade X of Private High School Amal Bakti. Samples used 38 students of class X. The research instrument used is a test about questionnaire as many as 30 questions with closed answer. The use of audio visual media in the learning process affect the interest of learning student on the subject of biology on Plantae material. The results of this study indicate that overall students experience increased interest in learning of 4.12% after the learning process in aids with audio-visual media in the form of learning videos. And the indicators used to measure interest in learning, namely pleasure (13.1%), curiosity (4.7%), interest (5.7%), comfort (1%) and student enthusiasm (3, 9%) towards biology teachers and biology lessons.Keyword: audio visual media, interest learning, Plantae
