Simulation Games

This chapter develops a reflection on the theme and the different meanings that simulation can assume in applied research ambits, and deals with the problems connected to the lack of a specific ontology shared by the scientific community. In this context, after the reflections on the interconnections between simulation and reality with a view to integrating rather than superimposing one on the other, we propose a classification for simulation in the educational field that takes the didactic, social and political literature into account and underlines the need to construct an ontology that can overcome the semantic ambiguity and support a scientific debate, with particular reference to simulation games seen from the perspective of the ecology of human development.

This editorial reports on a thorough analysis of the abundance and scarcity distribution of chemical elements and the minerals they form in the Earth, Sun, and Universe in connection with their number of neutrons and binding energy per nucleon. On one hand, understanding the elements’ formation and their specific properties related to their electronic and nucleonic structure may lead to understanding whether future solutions to replace certain elements or materials for specific technical applications are realistic. On the other hand, finding solutions to the critical availability of some of these elements is an urgent need. Even the analysis of the availability of scarce minerals from European Union sources leads to the suggestion that a wide-ranging approach is essential. These two fundamental assumptions represent also the logical approach that led the European Commission to ask for a multi-disciplinary effort from the scientific community to tackle the challenge of Critical Raw Materials. This editorial is also the story of one of the first fulcrum around which a wide network of material scientists gathered thanks to the support of the funding organization for research and innovation networks, COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology).

AbstractThe scientific debate which developed during the eighteenth century, proposed and diffused new theories on the generation not only within the scientific community. Microscopic investigation and various experimental campaigns fostered daring models attempting to unveil the natural phenomena from which life originates. Besides the famous scientific and philosophical works that marked the age, in the second part of the century two pamphlets appeared that well represent the importance of the querelle about embryological systems defining the concept of generation as a voyage within the human body. Lucina sine concubitu and Juno abortans, respectively published in England and in Germany between 1750 and 1760, narrate the odd and imaginary adventures of two doctors who are trying to interrupt and modify the embryos' journey towards the body of the mother.

Climatologists have recently introduced a distinction between projections as scenario-based model results on the one hand and predictions on the other hand. The interpretation and usage of both terms is, however, not univocal. It is stated that the ambiguities of the interpretations may cause problems in the communication of climate science within the scientific community and to the public realm. This paper suggests an account of scenarios as props in games of make-belive. With this account, we explain the difference between projections that should be make-believed and other model results that should be believed.

Despite the great interest that the scientific community has in quantum computing, the scarcity and high cost of resources prevent to advance in this field. Specifically, qubits are very expensive to build, causing the few available quantum computers are tremendously limited in their number of qubits and delaying their progress. This work presents new reversible circuits that optimize the necessary resources for the conversion of a sign binary number into two's complement of N digits. The benefits of our work are two: on the one hand, the proposed two's complement converters are fault tolerant circuits and also are more efficient in terms of resources (essentially, quantum cost, number of qubits, and T-count) than the described in the literature. On the other hand, valuable information about available converters and, what is more, quantum adders, is summarized in tables for interested researchers. The converters have been measured using robust metrics and have been compared with the state-of-the-art circuits. The code to build them in a real quantum computer is given.

Summary Economic development has a great importance, it has the First attention by scholars, researchers and economists within the state, especially after the end of the WWII, when the countries that suffered from this war began the reconstruction process, then the other types of Development began to appear, such as sustainable development and human development, and also they began to talk about social and political development. However, many challenges stand in the way of economic development such as poverty and underdevelopment, and certain strategies must be followed to achieve economic development and thus achieve Peace, peace and development are closely interrelated, since most wars and conflicts arise for economic reasons or either for the control of resources or because of unfair distribution of resources. This research deals with the economic development strategies for peace, with explanation of the relationship between peace and development.

This research aims to clarify the synergy (bond/integration) between the Capital and the Intelligence in light of the Qura’an and Sunnah from sutainable developmental perspective, in the other way its attentively enlightens the meanings of versus of Quran and Sunnah in sustainable way; The research methodology was based ubon Tracking the Holy Quraan & Sunnah to reveal/explain the link/connection between capital and Intelligance mentioned in it, the researcher reaches that there is strong integration between the types (Capital& Intelligence) in examples (Role Models/leaders) from Quran and Sunnah in order to achieve peace, prosperity and sustainability to the community, and it reveals that Quran and true sunnah has a biggest influence in supporting this Coalition by setting such these examples and with the guidance of Allah and its prophet Mohammed (ppuh) reactions (sayings, doing and approval), taken in consideration not to twist the versus of Quran or hadith to comply/ match with the subject of the research; and the results of this study that there is a strong sustainable relationship between all types of capital and intelligence supported by Quran and reinforced by Sunnah, in fact there is a solid bond between intelligence and capital shown in Quran and Sunnah for the sake of humanity, also Quran and Sunnah encourages transparency and positivity in all ways of life (relationships, thoughts, communications,..) in sustainable moral frame to achieve Eternity in this life and at the judgment day; And the recommendations is that It’s Important for Islamic Institutes to support like these researches effectively to enhance the sustainable human development in the society, further more It’s crucial to implement the intelligence types by Institutes in Islamic perspective in all ways of life (educational, cultural, social,..) to build a generation proud of his Islam and ready to work for it.

The purpose of this chapter is to define intrinsic values of information-communication processes in human development. The development of civilization depends upon the accumulation of wisdom, knowledge and cultural and infrastructural gain. Man is prouder of his heritage than of that which he can eventually achieve in the future. The future is often the threat of the imminent unknown, something that can destroy our stability, qualifications and position within society. On the other hand, the “future” is also the hope of the desperate for a better life.

This chapter looks at E.R. Dodds’s engagement with the paranormal. Dodds’s career in psychic research had three distinct phases: before, during, and after his tenure of the Oxford chair. His own paranormal beliefs, however, solidified early and remained consistent over his long career in the field. Telepathy was real, an innate part of human development, and a default explanation for other forms of clairvoyance and mediumship. On the other hand, disembodied intelligences—including demons, ghosts, and spirit guides—were a delusion. Though marginalized in modern histories of psychic studies, Dodds’s long and active association with the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) made him a central figure in the history of twentieth-century paranormal research in Britain, and one of the most thoughtful and hard-nosed embedded observers of its journey from the Victorian parlour to eventual extinction in the laboratory environment he had spent his adult life advocating.

I present the momentous discovery of gravitational waves, announced in 2016, starting from a confused Einstein who in 1936 tries to convince the scientific community that gravitational waves cannot exist (!), and then illustrating the extraordinary insights and breakthroughs that led 2017 Nobel Prize winners B. Barish, K. Thorne and R. Weiss to open an entirely new window on the Universe. This achievement has marked the beginning of a new era in science, and upcoming experiments have the potential to truly revolutionize our understanding of the Universe. Accounts of the perception of extra-terrestrial reality with senses beyond sight, such as those offered by astronauts who have been on the Moon, are exceedingly rare. That is hardly unsurprising: touch and taste require direct contact, while hearing and smell operate only over short distances, and are in any case confined to the Earth’s thin shell of atmosphere. Sight, on the other hand, allows us to collect the electromagnetic waves emitted by extraordinarily remote celestial objects.

SiC has currently attracted the interest of the scientific community for qubit applications. Despite the importance given to the properties of color centers in high-purity semi-insulating SiC, little is known on the electronic properties of defects in this material. In our study, we investigated the presence of electrically active levels in vanadium-doped substrates. Current mode deep level transient spectroscopy, carried out in the dark and under illumination, together with 1-D simulations showed the presence of two electrically active levels, one associated to a majority carrier trap and the other one to a minority carrier trap. The nature of the detected defects has been discussed in the light of the characterization performed on low-energy electron irradiated substrates and previous results found in the literature.
