Altmetrics Spectrum of Bioinformatics Literature

Social media is increasingly used for the dissemination of scientific publications by most science, technology and management (STM) journals. Bioinformatics is one of the new areas of research emerging in the subject tree. The role of social media in increasing the awareness of published works in bioinformatics has not been previously explored. Here, a qualitative analysis of the highest trending works in bioinformatics along with a correlation analysis with their social media metrics (altmetrics) is made. A comprehensive search has been performed for articles related to the bioinformatics using the SCOPUS Database. Further, a highly-cited article with more than 1000 citations has been filtered out. Another comprehensive search for bioinformatics articles using the Altmetric database was conducted. The Altmetric database provides a total weighted score of all online mentions for an article received on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and mainstream media sources. There is a significant correlation has been found between the patent mention and citations.

Background: Chikungunya is a vector-borne disease, mostly present in tropical and subtropical regions. The virus is spread by Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitos and symptoms include high fever to severe joint pain. Dhaka, Bangladesh, suffered an outbreak of chikungunya in 2017 lasting from April to September. With the goal of reducing cases, social media was at the forefront during this outbreak and educated the public about symptoms, prevention, and control of the virus. Popular web-based sources such as the top dailies in Bangladesh, local news outlets, and Facebook spread awareness of the outbreak. Objective: This study sought to investigate the role of social and mainstream media during the chikungunya epidemic. The study objective was to determine if social media can improve awareness of and practice associated with reducing cases of chikungunya. Methods: We collected chikungunya-related information circulated from the top nine television channels in Dhaka, Bangladesh, airing from 1st April–20th August 2017. All the news published in the top six dailies in Bangladesh were also compiled. The 50 most viewed chikungunya-related Bengali videos were manually coded and analyzed. Other social media outlets, such as Facebook, were also analyzed to determine the number of chikungunya-related posts and responses to these posts. Results: Our study showed that media outlets were associated with reducing cases of chikungunya, indicating that media has the potential to impact future outbreaks of these alpha viruses. Each media outlet (e.g., web, television) had an impact on the human response to an individual’s healthcare during this outbreak. Conclusions: To prevent future outbreaks of chikungunya, media outlets and social media can be used to educate the public regarding prevention strategies such as encouraging safe travel, removing stagnant water sources, and assisting with tracking cases globally to determine where future outbreaks may occur.

The subject of this research is the specifics, forms and functions of interaction in social media groups between the representatives of ethnic communities. The goal consists in determination of the role of social networks in adaptation of ethnocultural communities of St. Petersburg. The research is based on the polling technique for acquisition of information on the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral state of a person. The survey was conducted via distribution of questionnaires among the representatives of ethnic groups. The article also employs the method of systematic scientific observation over the social media groups, topic raised therein, as well as reading and analysis of the comments. The scientific novelty of this work consists in outlining of the nature, trends and development prospects of cross-cultural communications as the channel for ethnocultural interaction.  The main conclusions, which touch upon users from various ethnic communities who do not have enough experience in organization of activity of social media groups, demonstrate that it causes the loss of the sense of security, accumulation of prejudices and escalation of interethnic conflicts, as well as preference of the with restricted access, which contributes to lock down of the group and impedes adaptation in the accepting society. Stabilization of situation can be achieved by improvement of the quality of content posted in the social media, as well as level of their administration.

Beyond the widespread coverage of terrorism-related stories on international news outlets, we are witnessing the swift spread of alternative interpretations of these stories online. These alternative narratives typically involve digital transmediation or the remix, remediation, and viral dissemination of textual, audio, and video material on multiple new and social media platforms. This chapter discusses the role of new(er) media in facilitating the transmediated spread of extremist narratives, rumors, and political parody. Drawing from recent case studies based upon multi-modal analyses of digital texts on social media networks, including blogs, vlogs, Twitter, and Jihadist sites associated with acts of terror in Asia, Middle East, and North America, the chapter illustrates how digital transmediation significantly works oftentimes to construct counter narratives to government counter insurgency operations and mainstream media presentations. In discussing these examples, the chapter demonstrates how the new media points to varied narratives and reifies notions of national security, global politics, terrorism, and the media's role in framing the “War on Terrorism.” Moreover, a critical examination of remix texts and digital mashups of popular artifacts inform a Web 2.0 understanding of how the creative communication practices of online prosumers (hybrid consumers and producers) contest dominant interests in the online ideological battlefield for hearts and minds.

On March 18, 2014, a group of student protestors raided and occupied the Legislative Yuan and later the Executive Yuan in Taiwan. The student-led movement lasted for about 3 weeks after Taiwan's President made significant concessions to change his non-transparent practices when signing the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement (CSSTA) with People's Republic of China. Mostly labelled as a movement of civil disobedience against government's dealings with China, the 318 Sunflower Student Movement is viewed as an important step toward the deepening of Taiwan's democratization process. Its repercussions were felt in Hong-Kong and Macao where similar civil disobedience movements had emerged. On the basis of the resource mobilization theory (RMT), the authors used a combination of case study and thematic analysis methods to examine the role of social media in political mobilization in Taiwan. This chapter identified two major recurrent themes as follows: challenging mainstream media and mobilizing multi-movement resources.

To arrest the negative stereotypes of Africa in and outside the African continent, a number of civil society organizations and activists have launched various social media-assisted initiatives aimed at showcasing the positive facets of African cultures as well as the beautiful touristic attractions existing on the continent. One of such initiatives is the #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou movement launched in 2015 to combat the negative and colonial stereotypes of Africa through the sharing of beautiful images and videos of Africa on Twitter. The movement encouraged Africans of all horizons to share attractive images of Africa, particularly the ones that are rarely or never shown on mainstream media. Six years after the project was launched, it is high time to evaluate its strength and know some of its merits and implications. In line with this aphorism, this paper uses secondary sources and a qualitative analysis of images and videos shared on Twitter to examine the contribution of the #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou movement to the imperative of challenging colonial representations of Africa. It specifically discusses the genesis, trans-nationalization and promises of the project; and assesses the movement in the light of two philosophico-cultural currents/theories namely Afro-positivism and counter hegemony. The paper argues that the #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou movement put to question the popular but problematic belief that Africa is all about negativisms. It started a visual-assisted conversation not only about the wonders found on African soil but also about some of the cultures which non-Africans have often viewed as problematic or controversial. Such a conversation is a proof that Afro-optimism is still much alive on the continent and that; Africans are conscious that the fight against colonial stereotypes is a perpetual battle which must be fought even with the help of new digital cultures such as digitalized image-based activism.

The image of a shirtless black child in Copacabana watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks, published by photographer Lucas Landau on his Facebook page, was a focus of controversy across social media and produced a number of different interpretations about both the photograph and the boy in it. The Brazilian edition of the Spanish newspaper El País produced two texts on the subject, both of which brought about varying comments from Facebook users. Using the French discourse analysis as a basis, this article analyzes interpretations expressed about the texts published in El País. The goal was to understand social perceptions of the current conception of childhood by analyzing the reactions conveyed in the comments. Our research showed us that the kid’s individuality goes undisclosed and he becomes a platform for sociopolitical discussions. This is quite common in journalism and how it represents contemporary childhood: the role of children as active social actors is disregarded, and they are simply portrayed as being in need of protection.A imagem publicada pelo fotógrafo Lucas Landau em sua página no Facebook, mostrando um menino negro, sem camisa, vendo a queima de fogos no réveillon de Copacabana, causou polêmica nas redes sociais, com diferentes interpretações sobre a fotografia e a criança retratada. Por meio da análise do discurso de linha francesa, este artigo analisa essas manifestações, que exprimem a recepção dos textos do El País. O objetivo foi compreender as percepções sociais da concepção contemporânea de infância, por meio das reações dos comentadores. Pelo estudo, percebe-se que o garoto tem sua individualidade suprimida e se torna “palco” para discussões sociopolíticas. Isso reflete o que se tem visto de forma geral nas representações da infância no jornalismo: o papel das crianças como atores sociais ativos é ignorado, e elas são mostradas somente como seres tutelados. La imagen publicada por el fotógrafo Lucas Landau en su página del Facebook, mostrando a un niño negro, sin camisa, viendo la quema de fuegos en el año nuevo, en Copacabana, causó polémica en las redes sociales, con diferentes interpretaciones sobre la fotografía y el niño retratado. El diario español El País, en su versión brasileña, produjo dos textos sobre el tema, los cuales, a su vez, también generaron varios comentarios de usuarios de la red Facebook, en el perfil de la publicación. Este artículo hace un análisis de esas manifestaciones, que expresan la recepción de los textos de El País, por medio del análisis del discurso de línea francesa. El objetivo fue comprender percepciones sociales de la concepción contemporánea de la infancia, por medio de las reacciones de los comentaristas. Por medio del estudio, se percibe que el chico tiene su individualidad suprimida y se convierte en “escenario” para discusiones sociopolíticas. Esto refleja lo que se ha visto de forma general en las representaciones de la infancia contemporánea en el periodismo: el papel de los niños como actores sociales activos es ignorado, y ellas son mostradas sólo como seres tutelados.

The COVID-19 pandemics highlighted the role of social media influencers as political communicators and drew attention to the question of accountability of influencers and their overall role in the media ecosystem. The aim of the paper is to analyze the role of lifestyle Instagram influencers in shaping the public narrative about COVID-19 as an orchestrated political event aimed at curbing civic freedom in the Czech Republic with focus on two key elements: 1) the politicization of the domestic (space) on Instagram and its gendered nature and 2) the framing of the role of influencers as democratic public voices offering an alternative to mainstream media, within the context of the post-socialist historical experience of totalitarian past. The presented analysis builds on digital ethnography among Czech female lifestyle influencers and content analysis of selected Czech influencers profiles.

Статья посвящена изложению предложенной авторами модели психологического воздействия в социальных сетях. Основанием модели послужили теоретические подходы, направленные на понимание особенностей реагирования отдельного человека, столкнувшегося с потоком информации в социальных сетях, а также концепции, ориентированные на анализ роли социальной идентичности человека и его социального окружения в процессах воздействия. Описаны элементы модели: субъект воздействия, объект воздействия, средства, эффекты и контекст воздействия. Охарактеризованы четыре группы факторов эффективности психологического воздействия в социальных сетях: характеристики субъекта воздействия, особенности средств и контекста воздействия, характеристики объекта воздействия. The article is devoted to the presentation of the model of psychological influence on social media proposed by the authors. The model is based on theoretical approaches aimed at understanding the characteristics of the individual's response to the flow of information in social networks, as well as concepts focused on analyzing the role of a person's social identity and social environment in the impact processes. The elements of the model are described: subject of influence, object of influence, means, effects and context of influence. Four groups of factors of the effectiveness of psychological influence in social media are characterized: characteristics of the subject of influence, features of the means of influence and context of influence, characteristics of the object of influence.

AbstractIntroduction: The purpose of this article is to analyse the phenomenon of “body cult” as well as psychological and social factors conditioning its occurrence among young women. Particular attention was paid to the role of social media and an attempt was made to indicate possible preventive measures to promote health-popularising behaviour towards the body among high school students.Materials and methods: On the basis of the review of the available literature, developmental conditions of the adolescence period and research results on the subject were presented.Results: The paper presents the role of social media in the context of shaping behaviours related to “body cult”.Conclusions: The content presented on blogs and social networks put pressure on young women to cultivate the physical characteristics of a person. In this perspective, excessive focus on striving for the perfect figure can lead to the development of anti-health behaviour. Further research is definitely needed.

This paper develops the idea that recent “networked” social movements are driven by emotions and provides an analysis of the role of emotions in movement mobilization. The case study focuses on the 2013 protests against a “coup” within the Czech Social Democratic Party. The protests had an immediate impact, resulting in a series of demonstrations, mainstream media attention and a successful overturning of the “coup”. The movement’s Facebook page served as an important catalyst for the protest. We argue that the movement’s success can be explained by its emphasis on perceived issues of morality. As people tend to gather on Facebook to express their feelings, social media become a primary conduit for emotional protest, which can be subsequently taken to the streets.
