Gamification has been a very frequent research topic in the area of education in recent years, with some positive results, such as increasing student engagement and motivation. However, studies on gamification as an instructional strategy are recent and need more data to help teachers in its use in the classroom. Thus, this work describes a gamification experience of a social game with graduate students, teachers in primary and secondary education, and discusses how the elements present in games can provide engagement and favor learning. Furthermore, the authors present the Kahoot app as a possibility to stimulate and engage students in the teaching-learning process, analyzing some implications of learning with a mobile device. The results had a positive impact on increasing student engagement in both Game Social and Kahoot. Therefore, gamification and mobile learning can be good alternatives to increase the quality of teaching, generating meaningful experiences in the classroom.

Software development using microservice has many advantages over conventional technology. The short number of comprehension and applied examples of microservice technology have caused the software developed using this technology is confined. This research aims to apply microservice technology in the development of mobile learning (MLearning). Implementation of microservice will break the application into stand-alone entities and isolated with others. Thus failure in an entity will not effect the application as a whole system. This research using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods in collecting and analyzing data. The data obtained is modeled with an object-oriented approach by used Unified Modelling Language tool (UML). RUP method as one of software development method that gives focus to software architecture is used to develop the MLearning. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative merits of thesis consultation with a librarian prior to graduate submission and to explore whether thesis consultation has a significant impact on the quality of the theses submitted by postgraduate students. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a quantitative case study approach. The total number of thesis scrutiny reports written by librarians between 2009 and 2014 has been reviewed for errors found in theses. Errors have been classified as referencing errors and formatting errors. These have been compiled in a spreadsheet and analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. Findings This paper highlights that thesis consultation has had a positive impact on the quality of the theses students submitted for examination at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Thesis consultation with a strong focus on referencing clearly assisted students learning and applying different citation styles. There was a decrease in the number of referencing errors over time. Not much difference was seen in terms of formatting errors. Further tests showed that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between thesis consultation and the number of referencing errors made by graduate students. Practical implications This study may have implications for the engagement of academic libraries with their graduate communities. With thesis consultation, a librarian may scrutinize the same thesis more than once. Although this may increase the workload of librarians, thesis consultation/scrutiny will have a positive impact on the quality of research produced by graduate students. Originality/value This study shows that students benefited from thesis consultation and there was a significant reduction in citation errors. In reviewing the literature, it has been noted that research done in the area of thesis consultation was very limited; hence, this study significantly contributes to the body of knowledge that presently exists.

Sales controlling is a part of the sales organization. Its main tasks are centered around the coordination and control of sales activities. The economic rationale of sales controlling is to decrease transaction and agency costs which result from the asymmetric distribution of information. It is assumed that the activities of sales controlling can have a positive impact on the success of the sales organization. But positive results hinge on the quality of the output information that sales controllinghas got to offer to the sales organization. The authors of this research project developed a survey to gather information from graduate students about the experiences using a virtual synchronous platform, called Adobe Connect. While the format of the virtual classroom should encourage robust discussion, the authors found this not to be the case in the online virtual synchronous courses in education. Curious as to why the quality of discussion was poorer than expected, the authors surveyed graduate students enrolled in their virtual, hybrid (combination of face-to-face and virtual), and face-to-face classes over four semesters. Analysis of respondents’ Likert Scale ratings and answers to open-ended questions about various aspects of virtual synchronous, hybrid, and face-to-face course presentations were conducted, with a major focus on virtual synchronous online experiences. Results indicated that a learning curve exists when taking virtual synchronous course delivery. In other words, the more courses the students took the more competent and satisfied they became.
