Impact of Metacognition on Clinical Judgment and Competence in Simulation-Based Blended Learning

This article used a within-subjects pre- and post-test comparison design to verify the impact of metacognition on clinical judgment and clinical competence in simulations using blended learning for nursing students. The study participants were 56 nursing students in their 4th year of college. The metacognition score of the participants for this study was not statistically significant. The differences in clinical judgment score and clinical competence scores reached statistical significance (t=-13.76, p=<0.001; t==-9.06, p=<0.001). Post-learning, the difference in clinical judgment score among 3 metacognition groups was statistically significant (F=3.76, p=0.029). The differences in clinical competence score among 3 metacognition groups pre- and post-test were statistically significant (F=3.87, p=0.027; F=6.09, p=0.004).

Objective: to analyze the effect on the knowledge of therapeutic communication by Nursing students through the use of applications. Method: a randomized and controlled clinical trial conducted with 60 nursing students. In the topic Groups and therapeutic communication techniques, the intervention-IG group (n=30) used the application and the control-CG group (n=30) was submitted to the traditional class. The pre- (Zero Test -0) and post-test knowledge (immediate-Test 1 and after 30 day-Test 2) of those involved were evaluated. Results: Test 1, performed immediately after the intervention, showed a mean of 11 hits in the control group and 13 in the intervention, with statistical significance (p=0.036). Test 2 showed a decrease in hits in both groups (IG=10.87 and CG=9.3), but maintained the difference between IG and CG in the post-test (p<0.01). Conclusion: the use of the application on therapeutic communication favored the knowledge of the students, when compared to the traditional teaching method. REBEC RBR-4TF6MR Registration.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound and calf stretching in subjects with gastrocnemius tightness in plantar fascitis to reduce pain and improve functional ability. Method: 30 patients with plantar fascitis selected from Saveetha college of physiotherapy and rehabilitation center (SPARC) based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patients were treated with ultrasound therapy and calf stretching. The pre and post test values of pain and functional ability was be calculated using Silfverskiold test and Foot Function Index as an outcome measure. Results: The mean value and standard errors were calculated for different variables and the difference in mean value was tested for statistical significance using paired t test. P value of <0.0001 was considered as statistically significant. Conclusion: From the statistical analysis and graphical interpretation the final derived results concluded that combined therapy of ultrasound and calf stretching is found to be effective in relieving gastrocnemius tightness in patient suffering with plantar fascitis and it can be used to improve the functional activities.

The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between self-concept and patterns of family climate among students at the University of Islamic Sciences, and also aimed to investigate the effect of gender and age on this relationship.The sample of the study consisted of a group of students were selected randomly, totaling (139) students; (58) male and (81) female students.Two questionnaires were distributed on 139 students. The first questionnaire was on the impact of patterns of family climate on self-concept and the second one about self-concept. Then the researcher analyzed the results of each item in the questionnaire using appropriated statistical methods, calculated the correlation between self-concept and patterns of family climate using the Pearson correlation coefficient, and G-test to find the difference between correlation coefficients.The results showed a positive statistical significance relationship between family climate patterns on one hand and between self-concept in all its dimensions on the other hand.

Science education in Rwandan schools still faces a number of challenges including the lack or shortage of equipment available for science experiments. This paper describes research conducted to assess the impact of using improvised versus conventional laboratory equipment in experiments. Eighty-five lower secondary school students were assessed using a semi-experimental post-test design on thermal expansion of bodies. Data analysis using a t-test produced a t-Stat of 2.74 over a t-Critical of 1.98 indicating a statistical significance between the two experimental groups in favour of the group using improvised equipment. As a result, it is recommended that improvised equipment be used in those instances in which there is a lack or shortage of conventional equipment since students’ achievement was similar regardless of the type of equipment used.

Background: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is an accurate procedure to sample mediastinal tissue. Rapid on-site cytologic evaluation (ROSE) has been advocated to improve the performance of this procedure, but its benefit remains controversial. Our objective is to assess the utility of ROSE for EBUS-TBNA diagnostic accuracy among unselected patients. Methods: We prospectively collected data from all consecutive EBUS-TBNA procedures performed between 2008 and 2014. ROSE was introduced since 2011 in our daily practice. The accuracy of EBUS-TBNA with and without ROSE was compared in a univariate and multivariate model accounting for confounding factors. The impact of ROSE was then analyzed according to the etiology and size of the lesions. Results: Among 348 EBUS-TBNA procedures analyzed, 213 were performed with ROSE. The overall accuracy tended to be better with ROSE than without (90.6 vs. 84.4%; p = 0.082). After adjustment in a multivariate model, the benefit of ROSE still did not reach statistical significance (adjusted odds ratio 1.86; 95% confidence interval 0.79–4.41). Similar results were obtained in subgroups of patients with malignant disease or sarcoidosis. The size of the lesion did not influence the impact of ROSE on accuracy. Conclusions: ROSE was associated with a moderate increase in the accuracy of EBUS-TBNA, but the difference was not statistically significant. The same effect of ROSE was observed in malignant and nonmalignant lesions and this effect was not influenced by the lesion’s size.

Purpose: To examine the effect of note-taking on novice counselors’ recall and judgment of interview information in four situations: no notes, taking notes, taking notes and reviewing these notes, and reviewing notes taken by others.Method: The sample included 13 counselors-in-training recruited from a master’s level training program in rehabilitation counseling. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted to detect significant differences in recall and clinical judgment. Spearman’s rho correlation was used to determine if there were significant relationships in general judgment across note-taking conditions. The participants’ notes were examined to describe the note-taking strategies used by the participants.Results: MANOVA analysis showed a significant within-subjects effect in relation to the four note-taking behaviors (F[6, 70] = 2.475, p = .031). Univariate analyses for effects of note-taking indicated that there were significant differences for recall (F[3, 36] = 3.214, p = .034) but not clinical judgment (F[3, 36) = 1.936, p = .141). Specifically, the results showed that when counselors reviewed the provided notes, they recalled more facts than when they took notes themselves. The Spearman’s rho correlation results indicated that the counselors’ perceptions of the client changed, but did not become more accurate, as a function of note-taking activity.Conclusion: Note-taking was not a successful strategy to improve recall or judgment among these novice counselors. Counselor educators and supervisors should not assume that the benefits that come from note-taking in academic settings generalize to the clinical setting.

This study examined the effect of an extensive reading online program implemented in a blended learning format to increase students’ reading comprehension. The participants were Saudi freshmen students in a medical university, and the data were collected from two sources: pre- and post-test scores and an open-ended questionnaire. The results indicated students’ significant progress in reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge in the post-test stage. Similarly, students had positive attitudes and experiences after the intervention toward learning reading. Students reported that the extensive reading online program helped them to read more efficiently with maximum comprehension and work at their pace to develop their learning skills. It also was found that extensive reading created a motivating environment for learning. Students changed their views of reading as solely as an academic activity into seeing it as a personal interest and a lifelong learning activity. Finally, the study offered some pedagogical implications and recommendations for further research that will help teachers attempting to improve students’ reading comprehension via blended learning modes.

Abstrak: Kasus stunting di Indonesia masih tergolong tinggi dengan menyentuh angka 30,8%. Angka ini masih jauh dari standar WHO yaitu 20%. Angka prevalensi stunting di Sulawesi Utara sebesar 25,5%, meskipun angka stunting Sulawesi Utara di bawah angka nasional (30,8%) namun masih ada empat daerah dengan angka prevalensi stunting yang cukup tinggi termasuk kabupaten Bolaang Mongondow sebesar 30,6%. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat Desa Muntoi Kecamatan Passi Barat Kabupaten Bolaang Mongondow tentang pencegahan stunting. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah interaktif dan tanya jawab. Hasil penyuluhan menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata skor pengetahuan masyarakat tentang stunting pada saat pre-test adalah 10,43 dan pada saat post-test meningkat menjadi 19,60. Dampak pengabdian ini adalah meningkatnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang pencegahan stunting dengan perbedaan nilai rata-rata skor pengetahuan peserta penyuluhan pada saat pre-test dan post-test dengan angka 9,17. Untuk itu disarankan kepada masyarakat khususnya pada ibu untuk melakukan pencegahan stunting dengan pemenuhan asupan gizi selama hamil, melahirkan dan anak sebelum usia 2 tahun.Abstract: Stunting cases in Indonesia are still high, touching 30.8%. This figure is still far from the WHO standard of 20%. The stunting prevalence rate in North Sulawesi is 25.5%, although North Sulawesi's stunting rate is below the national rate (30.8%), there are still four regions with a fairly high stunting prevalence rate including Bolaang Mongondow district of 30.6%. The purpose of this service is to increase the knowledge of the people of Muntoi Village, Passi Barat District, Bolaang Mongondow Regency about the prevention of stunting. The methods used are interactive lectures and question and answer. The results showed that the average score of public knowledge about stunting at the pre-test was 10.43 and at the time of the post-test it increased to 19.60. The impact of this service is an increase in public knowledge about stunting prevention with the difference in the mean score of knowledge of the extension participants during the pre-test and post-test with a figure of 9.17. For this reason, it is recommended to the public, especially mothers, to prevent stunting by fulfilling nutritional intake during pregnancy, childbirth and children before the age of 2 years.

<p>The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act implemented value-based purchasing to raise the bar on quality care and patient satisfaction in healthcare facilities. The time has come to educate graduate nursing students on the reality of quality indicators and the impact that advanced practice nurses will have on these initiatives. This educational brief describes implementation of an educational session developed for graduate nursing students on VBP and the APN role. The content for the education was derived from an extensive literature review, <em>The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing</em>, and the clinical experience of the author. The education was presented to 12 Master’s in nursing students utilizing a presentation with a pre-/post-test, followed by a question and answer session. Pre/post test scores showed an average increase in mean score of 17 points. Students’ enthusiasm indicated that the content would be of benefit to them as they transitioned to the APN role. Consistent with <em>The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing</em>, specific to Essential III (Quality Improvement and Safety), it is recommended that current quality initiatives specific in the APN role be integrated into the curriculum.</p>

Abstract Background The emergence of COVID-19 raises the opportunity to reimagine medical education. One way of attempting this is online classes, also known as e-learning, through recordings and or live streaming. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the effectiveness of using the e-learning instructional methodology for a Pediatric module with the fourth year MBBS students at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Methods It was a sequential (Quantitative-Qualitative) mixed-method study. The quantitative component of the study consisted of pre and post-tests, as well as feedback on each session. The qualitative component was composed of focused-group discussions to explore students' experiences. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. Mean ±SD was reported for quantitative variables, and frequency and percentages were calculated for nominal variables. The pre and post-test scores were compared using a paired t-test. Pre and post mean test scores were analyzed in comparison to the level of student groups (Experts, Semi-experts, and Novice) by one-way ANOVA. For qualitative content analysis, categories were clumped together to yield sub-themes that were further merged into themes.Results All students (n= 102) participated and enrolled in this study. Fifty-nine participants (68.8%) were female. Participants were stratified into three groups, Novice 41(40.2%), Semi-expert 21 (19.6%), and Expert 40 (39.2%). The majority of the students appreciated the session structure and facilitation. There was a significant effect (p<0.005) on knowledge enhancement during each session, depicted by the improvement in post-test scores. It was also supported by the positive association (r=0.242 to 0.595) between the gain in knowledge and each session held. The ANOVA yielded no statistical significance between the knowledge gained among the three group levels, denoting that our online module had been proven successful in achieving the same learning goals as an in-person rotation.Conclusion E-learning is an effective way of continuing the process of delivering medical education, especially in unprecedented times. Technological enhancements will help carry the impact forward as a blended-learning pedagogical approach in undergraduate medical education.
