A Unified Classification Ecosystem for Auctions

Auctions have known considerable and continuous growth during the last decades due to their interesting properties in price formation when the value of goods traded is not known or varies. The systematic research in the area of auctions has advanced considerably since William Vickrey’s seminal paper on 1961. Although earlier research has been based mainly on Microeconomics and Games Theory, recent advances extended relevant research in Operational Research and Information Technology. Today, auctions and their applications form a challenging topic not only for economists but for operational researchers, marketers, logisticians and management engineers as well. This paper provides an overview of recent literature in auction theory, focusing on contemporary auction techniques and proposes an Auctions Classification Ecosystem (ACE) that encompasses previous works and new developments in the area. The proposed unified classification approach encompasses auction features and mechanism design parameters in a single scheme. This scheme facilitates the understanding of auction characteristics and supports auction practitioners in designing the appropriate format depending on the application requirements.

Purpose The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) states that asset prices in financial markets always reflect all available information about economic fundamentals. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide as to which predictions of the EMH seem to be borne out by empirical evidence. Design/methodology/approach Rather than following the classic three groups of tests for the different forms of EMH that are common in the literature, the authors consider how the two alternative definitions of the EMH and the joint hypothesis problem impact on the tests and leave the controversy unsolved. The authors briefly report the antecedents, the main theoretical and empirical contributions and recent literature on each type of tests. Findings Eventually, as a summary for each type of tests, the authors provide a critical view on the main sources of acrimony between the alternative schools of thought in understanding asset price formation. Originality/value The paper may be seen as an up-to-date introductory review for researchers on the different tests of the EMH performed, and for newcomers to understand the key sources of acrimony between rationalists and behaviorists.

This paper describes a full-scale physical model and its application to investigate the effectiveness/performance of small-bore sewers for a range of operational and design parameters. The implementation methodology involves observing the movement of synthetic gross solids in three small bore sewers (150, 100 and 75 mm diameter) for different volumes of simulated flush waves and gradients. The simulated flush waves were generated, using an automated wave sequencer, for three different flush volumes (3, 4.5 and 6 litres). To investigate the impact of solid shape factor, a number of tests were carried out using synthetic solids in combination with toilet tissue paper. In total, more than 1,000 tests were performed for different operational and design parameter combinations. Results obtained to date have confirmed earlier studies, particularly with respect to the role of flush volume in solids transport, and identified the impact of gradient variation and its significance particularly in small-bore sewers receiving low flush volume. Results from the physical model application exercise will be used to propose new design guidelines for wastewater collection systems with specific consideration to new developments and inform the decision support system, currently being developed as part of a research project on water cycle management for new developments (WaND).

Fabric selection is a critical component in the operation of a dust collection system venting a waste to energy boiler. This paper will discuss the factors to be evaluated when selecting the proper fabric to use in filtration systems venting waste and refuse derived fuel fired boilers. Consideration will be given to the type of scrubbing equipment, the type of cleaning system, the design parameters of the unit, and the gas stream chemistry. Operating experience from existing filtration systems will also be presented. Special emphasis will be made on equipment design, particulate capture and filter service life. A look at new developments in fabric filtration, including fabric blends, micro-denier filtration, and the use of pleated filter technology, will complete this overview.

AbstractThis essay presents a critical overview of recent literature in English on the modern cultural history of death. In order to locate new developments, it charts the evolution of the field from the 1970s until today and distinguishes between French and Anglophone strands in the historiography. A selection of studies published between 2005 and 2015 exemplifies a revival in recent scholarship that hangs on four main innovations: the abandonment of grand narratives of modernization and secularization; an interdisciplinary integration of political, cultural, and intellectual history; greater attention to the individual; and the expansion of the field beyond Europe and North America. Thus, today, the history of death is both local and global, public and private, personal and universal.

Herein, we apply theoretical models to characterize the transfer function and frequency response of a complex optoelectronic circuit that comprises a primary ultrafast sampling circuit followed by a cascade connection of N demultiplexing stages. The successive radio-frequency optoelectronic samplers were based on the cascade connection of positive-intrinsic-negative-photodiodes (PIN-PDs). We developed a procedure to calculate the principal design parameters that allows us to use optical power for each sampling and demultiplexing stage, such that the circuit can be designed based on the application requirements. The results obtained from the theoretical models were compared with the measurements obtained from the 2.5 GS/s sampling circuit connected in cascade with a 1.25 GS/s and a 625 MS/s demultiplexing circuit implemented using commercial PIN-PDs

The oil film have many excellences such as bigger load bearing capacity, longer life, wider velocity range, lower friction etc. The traditional design method is experience test. Even the design parameters could meet the application requirements, but they can not exert the best performance of the oil film bearing. The relationship between load bearing capacity and materials, lubricants, design parameters and structural characteristics of oil film bearing was analysed. To improve the load capacity and run at the optimal state, the objective function was built to optimize the main parameters. Optimization results showed that the load bearing capacity has been greatly improved.

SummuryWith the proliferation of sensor networks and sensor network applications, the overall complexity of such systems is continuously increasing. Sensor networks are now heterogeneous in terms of their hardware characteristics and application requirements even within a single network. In addition, the requirements of currently supported applications are expected to change over time. All of this makes developing, deploying, and optimizing sensor network applications an extremely difficult task. In this paper, we present the architecture of TinyCubus, a flexible and adaptive cross-layer framework for TinyOS-based sensor networks that aims at providing the necessary infrastructure to cope with the complexity of such systems. TinyCubus consists of a cross-layer framework that enables optimizations through cross-layer interactions, a configuration engine that distributes components efficiently by considering the roles of the sensor nodes and provides support to install components dynamically, and a data management framework that selects and adapts both system and data management components. Finally, relevant research challenges associated with the development of each framework are identified and discussed in the paper.
