Design and Simulation of Passive Controller for Guided Rockets

In order to increase the density of guided rockets, a passive control method was proposed to reduce the trajectory dispersion caused by initial disturbances, thrust misalignment, vertical wind, etc. at the end of boost phase. The basic principle of passive control method was introduced briefly, and then the disturbance motion equations for the rocket projectile were established. The effective conditions to implement passive control on guided rockets were put forward. A technical scheme of installing elastic sabots on rocket projectile was proposed to realize passive control and a simulation was conducted. The simulation results indicate that the passive control scheme can effectively decrease the velocity direction deviation caused by various disturbances factors at the end of boost phase.

Aiming at a three-axis stabilized microsatellite, a novel attitude control method, called magnetorquer based vertical damping, is proposed to avoid the occurrence of the worst situation that the non-solar-battery-plane spins towards the sun. DSP based simulation results based on DSP show that the vertical damping method outperforms the simple damping method when no orbit information is available, simultaneously the whole attitude control scheme is simple and effective. The proposed solution guarantees a stable power supply from the electrical source even under the extreme situation, which improves the reliability of the whole microsatellite system.

Static var generator (SVG) basic principle and control method are introduced in the article, a direct current control method for SVG is put forward based on d-q transformation, this method is also analyzed from theory and made simulation model, the simulation results show that this control method is reasonable and effective.

A passivity-based controller with quantization for spacecraft attitude control is developed. This passive control scheme includes two parts which are a proportional controller for quaternion feedback and a strictly positive real controller for the angular velocity. To alleviate the errors caused by quantization, a special modification for the nonlinear quantized input is employed in the strictly positive real controller. Asymptotic stability can be guaranteed with the presented controller structure. A guideline for the controller parameter selection is provided with sensitivity analysis for the control scheme. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

For diving control of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), a sliding-mode PID control with backstepping is proposed. First, an equivalent model of AUV is developed. Then, the sliding mode control with an PID sliding surface is proposed for the trajectory tracking control of AUV. Moreover, the analysis of stability can be completed by Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, To validate the proposed control scheme, the simulation results are illustrated in this paper. Simulation results show that, the tracking precision and the robustness of the system are improved under the proposed control method.

Background: With the growing popularity of various group communication applications such as file transfer, multimedia events, distance learning, email distribution, multiparty video conferencing and teleconferencing, multicasting seems to be a useful tool for efficient multipoint data distribution. An efficient communication technique depends on the various parameters like processing speed, buffer storage, and amount of data flow between the nodes. If data exceeds beyond the capacity of a link or node, then it introduces congestion in the network. A series of multicast congestion control algorithms have been developed, but due to the heterogeneous network environment, these approaches do not respond nor reduce congestion quickly whenever network behavior changes. Objective: Multicasting is a robust and efficient one-to-many (1: M) group transmission (communication) technique to reduced communication cost, bandwidth consumption, processing time and delays with similar reliability (dependability) as of regular unicast. This patent presents a novel and comprehensive congestion control method known as integrated multicast congestion control approach (ICMA) to reduce packet loss. Methods: The proposed mechanism is based on leave-join and flow control mechanism along with proportional integrated and derivate (PID) controller to reduce packet loss, depending on the congestion status. In the proposed approach, Proportional integrated and derivate controller computes expected incoming rate at each router and feedback this rate to upstream routers of the multicast network to stabilize their local buffer occupancy. Results: Simulation results on NS-2 exhibit the immense performance of the proposed approach in terms of delay, throughput, bandwidth utilization, and packet loss than other existing methods. Conclusion: The proposed congestion control scheme provides better bandwidth utilization and throughput than other existing approaches. Moreover, we have discussed existing congestion control schemes with their research gaps. In the future, we are planning to explore the fairness and quality of service issue in multicast communication.

AbstractThis study investigates the suppression of the sound produced when a jet, issued from a circular nozzle or hole in a plate, goes through a similar hole in a second plate. The sound, known as a hole tone, is encountered in many practical engineering situations. The mean velocity of the air jet $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}u_0$ was $6\text {--}12\ \mathrm{m}\ {\mathrm{s}}^{-1}$. The nozzle and the end plate hole both had a diameter of 51 mm, and the impingement length $L_{im}$ between the nozzle and the end plate was 50–90 mm. We propose a novel passive control method of suppressing the tone with an axisymmetric obstacle on the end plate. We find that the effect of the obstacle is well described by the combination ($W/L_{im}$, $h$) where $W$ is the distance from the edge of the end plate hole to the inner wall of the obstacle, and $h$ is the obstacle height. The tone is suppressed when backflows from the obstacle affect the jet shear layers near the nozzle exit. We do a direct sound computation for a typical case where the tone is successfully suppressed. Axisymmetric uniformity observed in the uncontrolled case is broken almost completely in the controlled case. The destruction is maintained by the process in which three-dimensional vortices in the jet shear layers convect downstream, interact with the obstacle and recursively disturb the jet flow from the nozzle exit. While regions near the edge of the end plate hole are responsible for producing the sound in the controlled case as well as in the uncontrolled case, acoustic power in the controlled case is much lower than in the uncontrolled case because of the disorganized state.

In high-speed fluid dynamics, base pressure controls find many engineering applications, such as in the automobile and defense industries. Several studies have been reported on flow control with sudden expansion duct. Passive control was found to be more beneficial in the last four decades and is used in devices such as cavities, ribs, aerospikes, etc., but these need additional control mechanics and objects to control the flow. Therefore, in the last two decades, the active control method has been used via a microjet controller at the base region of the suddenly expanded duct of the convergent–divergent (CD) nozzle to control the flow, which was found to be a cost-efficient and energy-saving method. Hence, in this paper, a systemic literature review is conducted to investigate the research gap by reviewing the exhaustive work on the active control of high-speed aerodynamic flows from the nozzle as the major focus. Additionally, a basic idea about the nozzle and its configuration is discussed, and the passive control method for the control of flow, jet and noise are represented in order to investigate the existing contributions in supersonic speed applications. A critical review of the last two decades considering the challenges and limitations in this field is expressed. As a contribution, some major and minor gaps are introduced, and we plot the research trends in this field. As a result, this review can serve as guidance and an opportunity for scholars who want to use an active control approach via microjets for supersonic flow problems.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) has been utilized as the material of smart actuators due to the miniaturization and lightweight. However, the nonlinearity and hysteresis of SMA material seriously affect the precise control. In this article, a novel disturbance compensation-based adaptive control scheme is developed to improve the control performance of SMA actuator system. Firstly, the nominal model is constructed based on the physical process. Next, an estimator is developed to online update not only the unmeasured system states but also the total disturbance. Then, the novel adaptive controller, which is composed of the nominal control law and the compensation control law, is designed. Finally, the proposed scheme is evaluated in the SMA experimental setup. The comparison results have demonstrated that the proposed control method can track reference trajectory accurately, reject load variations and stochastic disturbances timely, and exhibit satisfactory robust stability. The proposed control scheme is system independent and has some potential in other types of SMA-actuated systems.

Dynamic model development and control of an existing operating industrial continuous bulk free radical styrene polymerization process are carried out to evaluate the performance of auto-refrigerated CSTRs (continuous stirred tank reactors). One of the most difficult tasks in polymerization processes is to control the high viscosity reactor contents and heat removal. In this study, temperature control of an auto-refrigerated CSTR is carried out using an alternative control scheme which makes use of a vacuum system connected to the condenser and has not been addressed in the literature (i.e. to the best of our knowledge). The developed model is then verified using some experimental data of the real operating plant. To show the heat removal potential of this control scheme, a common control strategy used in some previous studies is also simulated. Simulation results show a faster dynamics and superior performance of the first control scheme which is already implemented in our operating plant. Besides, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is developed for the polymerization process under study to provide a better temperature control while satisfying the input/output and the heat exchanger capacity constraints on the heat removal. Then, a comparison has been also made with the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller utilizing some common tuning rules. Some robustness and stability analyses of the control schemes investigated are also provided through some simulations. Simulation results clearly show the superiority of the NMPC strategy from all aspects.

Currently, high-performance power conversion requirements are of increasing interest in microgrid applications. In fact, isolated bidirectional dc-dc converters are widely used in modern dc distribution systems. The dual active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter is identified as one of the most promising converter topology for the mentioned applications, due to its benefits of high power density, electrical isolation, bidirectional power flow, zero-voltage switching, and symmetrical structure. This study presents a power management control scheme in order to ensure the power balance of a dc microgrid in stand-alone operation, where the renewable energy source (RES) and the battery energy storage (BES) unit are interfaced by DAB converters. The power management algorithm, as introduced in this work, selects the proper operation of the RES system and BES system, based on load/generation power and state-of-charge of the battery conditions. Moreover, a nonlinear robust control strategy is proposed when the DAB converters are in voltage-mode-control in order to enhance the dynamic performance and robustness of the common dc-bus voltage, in addition to overcoming the instability problems that are caused by constant power loads and the dynamic interactions of power electronic converters. The simulation platform is developed in MATLAB/Simulink, where a photovoltaic system and battery system are selected as the typical RES and BES, respectively. Assessments on the performance of the proposed control scheme are conducted. Comparisons with the other control method are also provided.
