AlTiC master alloys have been prepared by Contact Reaction Method(CRM).X-ray diffraction,SEM and EDS were used to analyse the AlTiC master alloys. It showed that morphology and distribution of TiC and Al3Ti particle have correspondingly changed with the transformation of temperature. As a result, the change in morphology and distribution of TiC and Al3Ti particle has considerably affected the gain refining performance of AlTiC master alloys. The result showed that it had excellent grain refining performance for commercially pure aluminum in 800°C.

The Al-5Ti-0.62C master alloy was prepared through a method of thermal explosion in molten aluminum. The process of remelting and refining of commercially pure aluminum was conducted, and precipitation samples with different heat-treatment times were obtained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), and other techniques were used to analyze the microstructure of the precipitates at the bottom of the samples so as to explore the fading mechanism of Al-Ti-C alloy refinement. The results showed that an obvious precipitation phenomenon of titanium compounds existed in the remelted Al-5Ti-0.62C master alloy and that there were both TiC compounds and TiAl3compounds in the precipitates; in the refined pure aluminum samples, the precipitates were mainly TiC compounds. Precipitation of titanium compounds in aluminum melting is the main cause of fading in the refinement effect of an Al-Ti-C master alloy.

The texture feature and grain refinement effect of Al-5Ti-C alloy on pure aluminum were analyzed and its attenuation mechanism was discussed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM) and other experimental methods. The results show that: Al-5Ti-C alloy is composed of Al, TiAl3 and TiC. Al-5Ti-C alloy has a good grain refining capacity for commercially pure aluminum. During the heat preservation process, due to precipitation of titanium compound in the aluminum melt, refinement effect of Al-Ti-C alloy is declined.

Abstract Al–TiO2–C–La2O3 refiners were synthesized by the in-situ exothermic dispersion method using TiO2, C, Al and La2O3 powders as raw materials. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate the microstructures of the Al–TiO2–C–La2O3 refiners. Commercial pure aluminum was refined by the Al–TiO2–C–La2O3 refiners, aimed at investigating refining performance and the resistance to recession. The results show that the Al–TiO2– C–La2O3 refiner with 0.2% La2O3 is composed of α-Al, blocky Al3Ti, dispersive Al2O3 and TiC, which has a better refining effect on commercial pure aluminum than the Al– TiO2–C refiner. The average grain size refined by the above refiner is about 80 μm and it performs better and has a longer refining effect. The grain structure refined by Al–TiO2– C–La2O3 becomes finer within 5 min and remains the same after 120 min, while refined by the Al–TiO2–C refiner the equivalent times are 10 min and 30 min respectively.

The grain refining effects of Al-Ti, Al-TiC and Al-Ti-C master alloys on commercially pure aluminum were compared, and the grain refinement mechanism of TiAl3 and TiC among master alloys was discussed. The results show that: the grain refinement of the master alloys Al-TiC and Al-Ti toward pure aluminum mainly stems from the heterogeneous nucleation role of TiC and TiAl3 particles, but with the extension of heat preservation time of fused mass, its role of heterogeneous nucleation will decline due to dissolution of TiAl3 and aggregation and precipitation of TiC. The preferable grain refinement effects of Al-Ti-C master alloys toward pure aluminum are mainly due to the fact that when TiAl3 and TiC particles are acted commonly as heterogeneous nucleation particles, the heterogeneous nucleation effect of TiC particles will be enhanced because of the presence of TiAl3.

Al-Ti-B-RE master alloy was prepared by casting of pure Ti. To improve the quality and reduce the cost of α- Al, the Al-Ti-B-RE master alloy was added to α-Al in molten and diluted state. The refining method had the advantages of shorter contact time and better refining effect. The array of the second phase particles was separated and the nucleating rate was greatly increased. Analysis and comparison of the refining effects were by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM).The refining experiment showed that the molten and diluted state Al-Ti-B-RE by oneself had better grain refining performance and had obvious advantages over Al-Ti-B in domestic.

The Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles obtained by the aqueous coprecipitation method are characterized systematically using scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer. These magnetic nanoparticles are spheric, dispersive, and have average grain size of 50 nm. The size and magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be tuned by the reaction temperature. All samples exhibit high saturation magnetization (Ms=53.4 emu·g-1) and superparamagnetic behavior with a block temperature (TB) of 215K. These properties make such Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles worthy candidates for the magnetic carriers of targeted-drug or gene therapy in future.

Zinc biodegradable alloys attracted an increased interest in the last few years in the medical field among Mg and Fe-based materials. Knowing that the Mg element has a strengthening influence on Zn alloys, we analyze the effect of the third element, namely, Y with expected results in mechanical properties improvement. Ternary ZnMgY samples were obtained through induction melting in Argon atmosphere from high purity (Zn, Mg, and Y) materials and MgY (70/30 wt%) master alloys with different percentages of Y and keeping the same percentage of Mg (3 wt%). The corrosion resistance and microhardness of ZnMgY alloys were compared with those of pure Zn and ZnMg binary alloy. Materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), linear and cyclic potentiometry, and immersion tests. All samples present generalized corrosion after immersion and electro-corrosion experiments in Dulbecco solution. The experimental results show an increase in microhardness and indentation Young Modulus following the addition of Y. The formation of YZn12 intermetallic phase elements with a more noble potential than pure Zinc is established. A correlation is obtained between the appearance of new Y phases and aggressive galvanic corrosion.

NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal process, and the effect of temperature on them was studied. The particles were annealed at various temperatures ranging from 413 to 1473 K. Studies were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and a vibrating sample magnetometer. The annealing temperature had a significant effect on the magnetic and structural parameters, such as the crystallite size, lattice parameter, magnetization and coercivity.
