This study investigated the combined influence of stochastic surface roughness patterns and a magnetic field produced by an infinitely long wire on the distribution of hydrodynamic pressure in journal bearings lubricated with ferrofluids. According to our results, the magnetic field can raise the dimensionless pressure, improve the dimensionless load capacity and reduce the modified friction coefficient, especially at high eccentricity ratio. However, these bearing Characteristics are also influenced by surface roughness pattern depend on the length to diameter ratio λ, and the critical value of λ equal to 0.6, 0.95 and 1.8 in this study.

An analysis and experimental results are presented for a magnetohydrodynamic partial journal bearing using a liquid metal lubricant. An external magnetic field is applied axially along the journal, and current is permitted to flow between the journal and bearing. The analysis shows that increased load capacity can be achieved by supplying current from an external source. In addition, the analysis reveals the existence of an optimum Hartmann number at which the load capacity peaks for a given applied current. This optimum value is about 5 for a dimensionless current I¯ = −5 applied to a bearing with a width/diameter ratio of 1 and an eccentricity ratio of 0.6. Experimental results which demonstrate the increase in load capacity resulting from an externally applied current are presented graphically and compared with the theory.

The properties of magnetic bearings, particularly those based on repulsive forces due to eddy currents, are determined by a complex mixture of electrical and mechanical length and time scales. A perturbation solution for the magnetic field structure based on careful ordering of these parameters has permitted the effects of realistic gap geometries to be analyzed. The load capacity of eddy current journal bearings is found to be somewhat larger than previously predicted in an earlier paper which used magnetic fields based on constant gap size. The present results may be of interest to those concerned with calculating eddy currents in conventional attractive magnetic bearings.

The design problem is formulated for multi-recess hydrostatic journal bearings with a design criterion of minimum total power loss. The design is subject to the constraints of constant ratio of the recess area to the total bearing area and maximum load capacity for a given recess geometry. The L/D ratio, eccentricity ratio, ratio of recess area to total bearing area, and shaft rotational speed are considered as parameters. The analysis is based on the bearing model of Raimondi and Boyd [1]. This model is generally valid for low-to-moderate speeds and a ratio of recess area-to-total bearing area of approximately 0.5 or greater. Design charts are presented for bearings having a ratio of recess area-to-total bearing area of 0.6 and employing capillary and orifice restrictors, these being the most common types of compensating elements. A design example is given to illustrate the use of the design charts.

An analytical solution for the performance characteristics of finite porous journal bearings is obtained. Results are presented which relate the eccentricity ratio and coefficient of friction as functions of load number for design variables of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1. The load capacity obtained by using the finite bearing theory is compared to the load capacity obtained by using the short-bearing approximation and the infinite-bearing approximation.

The water-lubricated bearings have been paid attention for their advantages to reduce the power loss and temperature rise and increase load capacity at high speed. To fully study the complete dynamic coefficients of two water-lubricated, hydrostatic journal bearings used to support a rigid rotor, a four-degree-of-freedom model considering the translational and tilting motion is presented. The effects of tilting ratio, rotary speed, and eccentricity ratio on the static and dynamic performances of the bearings are investigated. The bulk turbulent Reynolds equation is adopted. The finite difference method and a linear perturbation method are used to calculate the zeroth- and first-order pressure fields to obtain the static and dynamic coefficients. The results suggest that when the tilting ratio is smaller than 0.4 or the eccentricity ratio is smaller than 0.1, the static and dynamic characteristics are relatively insensitive to the tilting and eccentricity ratios; however, for larger tilting or eccentricity ratios, the tilting and eccentric effects should be fully considered. Meanwhile, the rotary speed significantly affects the performance of the hydrostatic, water-lubricated bearings.

We show that the ground state of the xy model (ferromagnetic orantiferromagnetic) in a transverse magnetic field h --- for any spin value, in any dimension --- is the state with all spins aligned antiparallel to the field when h is greater than some critical value hc. In particular, for the spin-1/2 linear chain, we study the behavior of correlations as functions of the magnetic field. PACS Nos.: 75.10Jm and 64.60.Cm

The analysis of possible current distributions when passing current through a periodically modulated long Josephson contact located in an external magnetic field is carried out. An approach based on the analysis of continuous configuration modification proceeding in the direction of Gibbs potential reduction is used for the calculation. The case when the pinning parameter is less than the critical value is considered. It is shown that at any value of the external magnetic field, there is a critical value of the transport current, when exceeded, the situation ceases to be stationary, as a result of which energy passes into radiation and heat, i.e. currents cease to be persistent. The value of the critical current is determined by the value of the magnetic field at which the vortices begin to fill the entire length of the contact. With an increase in the external magnetic field, the critical value of the current decreases.

Abstract The mixed lubrication performance of water-lubricated coupled journal and thrust bearing (simplified as coupled bearing) is investigated by a developed numerical model. To ensure the continuity of hydrodynamic pressure and flow at the common boundary between the journal and thrust bearing, the conformal transformation is introduced to unify the solution domain of the Reynolds equation. In the presented study, the coupled effects between the journal and thrust bearing are discussed. The effects of the thrust bearing geometric film thickness on the mixed lubrication performance, including the load capacity, contact load and friction coefficient, of the journal bearing are investigated. And the effects of the journal bearing eccentricity ratio on the mixed lubrication performance of the thrust bearing are also investigated. The simulated results indicate the mutual effects between the journal and thrust bearing cannot be ignored in the coupled bearing system. The increasing thrust bearing geometric film thickness generates a decrease in load capacity of journal bearing. There exists an optimal eccentricity ratio of journal bearing that yields the minimum friction coefficient of the thrust bearing.

A numerical analysis is performed on the hydrodynamic characteristics of electrorheological(ER) fluid flows in journal bearings based on the basic hydrodynamic equations. The flow field is assumed to be incompressible and isotropic, the Bingham plastic model is used to describe the behavior of ER fluids. The effect of bearing eccentricity ratio and applied electric field intensity has been studied attentively. It shows that control of the journal bearing through external electric field is much more feasible in high eccentricity ratio bearing than in low eccentricity ratio one.

The characteristics of externally pressurized journal bearings with four recesses and with membrane-type variable-flow restrictors as compensating elements are analytically investigated by using the bearing model of Raimondi and Boyd. The effects of the ratio of the recess pressure at zero eccentricity to the supply pressure (pressure ratio), the eccentricity ratio, the compliance of the membrane and the shaft rotation on the lubricant flow rate, the load capacity and the stiffness of these bearings are presented for a given aspect ratio and inter-recess*** land width-to-diameter ratio. For a non-rotating shaft, it is shown that when the bearing operates at zero eccentricity there is a pressure ratio that gives an optimum bearing stiffness. This pressure ratio is a function of the aspect ratio of the bearing only. Using this pressure ratio, data for the load capacity and stiffness of the bearing are presented for an eccentricity ratio that varies from 0 to 0·1. For these data, the membrane compliances used are those that would give an infinite bearing stiffness if the bearing were operating at zero eccentricity.
