Homogenized magnesium alloy Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca has been hot-extruded and then aging treated for improving the magnesium alloy plastic deformation ability and promoting applications of magnesium alloys. In the hot extrusion process, the influences of extrusion parameters for microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca magnesium alloy were investigated. The results show that dynamic recrystallization occurred during hot extrusion. Compared with as-cast alloy, the grains are fined remarkably, and the mechanical properties are enhanced obviously. Twin crystals appeared in grains after hot extrusion, with the extrusion temperature rising, twin crystal structures has been reduced. Aging further increased the mechanical properties of the estruded alloy. The ultimate tensile strength of Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca alloy is about 385 MPa and the elongation is about 11% when extruded at 320°C(extrusion ratio is 10) and aged at 190°C for 8h.

Laminated veneer lumber is taken as an object of study, and use LVL specimens of different sizes for compression test and tensile test. The goal of the experiment is to investigate the size effect on compressive strength and tensile strength as well as the influence of the secondary glued laminated face, which appears in the secondary molding processes. The results show that both compressive strength and tensile strength have the size effect apparently and the existence of the secondary glued laminated face lower the compressive strength of LVL specimens. Afterwards, the relationship between compressive strength and volume along with tensile strength and area are obtained by the test results.

The mechanical properties, among all the properties of plastic materials, are often the most important properties because virtually all service conditions and the majority of end-use applications involve some degree of mechanical loading [1]. In the present work three different commercial polyethylene materials are tensile tested at four or five different tensile rates and two or three temperatures. Tensile test results against tensile rate include stress at 0.5 % elongation, tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation at yield and % elongation are determined. It is concluded that the structure, chain lengths and branching rates of polymer matrix significantly effected tensile test curve characteristic.

The Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing has been investigated. It was found that the Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy processed by ECAP obtained ultrafine grains and exhibits excellent mechanical properties. After ECAP, the average grain size of Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy refined to about 400 nm. The highest strengths with yield strength of 381.45MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 438.33MPa were obtained after 2 passes at 623K. It was found that cracks were preferentially initiated and propagated in the interior of X-phase during the tensile test. As a result, the elongation of alloy is decreased with pass number increasing.

In-situ (Al2O3+Al3Zr)p/A356 composites were synthesized by melt reaction technology and the effects of yttrium on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites are investigated. The results indicate that the reinforced particulates Al2O3 and Al3Zr become smaller in size with yttrium addition, the sizes are about 0.5~2μm. The distribution becomes more homogeneous, the morphologies are spheroid-shape and ellipsoid-shape, the ambitus is blunt. The mechanical properties test results show the mechanical properties of the composites are greatly enhanced. With 0.4wt.% yttrium addition, the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the composites reach to 388MPa and 296MPa, which are increased 35.6% and 37.0% comparing with no yttrium addition, respectively. The effect mechanisms of yttrium are discussed.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg-5Y-xMM alloys have been investigated, where MM stands for the Ce-rich misch metal. It was found that the additions of the MM led to refinement of the microstructures and improvement of the mechanical properties. The dynamic recrystallization has occurred during hot extrusion. As a result, the mechanical properties of the alloys were greatly improved after hot extrusion. It was indicated that the specimens of the extruded alloy Mg-5Y-3MM displayed a higher tensile strength, and the values of the ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength were 260 and 183MPa, respectively.

The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg-2.5 Zn-0.5Y Mg alloy were investigated. The grainy intermetallic phases (I-phase and w-phase) observed in the as-cast Mg-2.5Zn-0.5Y alloy distributed homogeneously in the hot extruded alloys. Compared with the cast one, the extruded alloy shows predominant mechanical properties as the result of refined microstructure and the dispersed intermetallic phases formed during hot extrusion. The ultimate tensile strength and the yield tensile strength of the extruded alloy were 354.8 MPa and 305.9MPa respectively.

According to the profile section of transport equipment, the wide and hollow AZ31 magnesium alloy profiles was self-designed. Extrusion molding performance of the profiles, the law of microstructure and mechanical properties were studied when billets pretreatment and extrusion temperature were changed. The conclusions are as follows: (1) The grains of AZ31 profiles extruded by pre-extrusion billet are smaller and the strength is better, its maximum tensile strength is 280MPa. (2) Other processes being equal, the grains of AZ31 profiles are smaller and strength is higher, but the plastic is bad, when the extrusion temperature is 300°C. However, both strength and ductility of AZ31 profiles are better, when the extrusion temperature is 350°C. (3) Wide and Hollow AZ31 profiles perform significant heterogeneity and anisotropic characteristics on mechanical properties.
