In this paper an analysis of the stress state of the hull of the ship Kormoran II loaded by non-contact mine explosion were performed. An empirical description of the pressure wave from the non-contact TNT explosion loads reported by authors such as RH Cole T. L. Geers and K.S. Hunter was used. The way of modeling the pressure wave using the acoustic medium implemented CAE programs was shown. The paper presents the results of pressure distribution on the hull of the ship Kormoran II at selected time points from TNT explosion under the keel of the ship. The paper presents detailed results of the stress state in the selected nodes, for example on the frame of main motor construction.

Abstract The state of stress in the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ) changed significantly because of the occurrence of the 1992 Mw 6.1 Joshua Tree and the MW 7.3 Landers earthquakes. To quantify this change, focal mechanisms from the 1975 Galway Lake sequence, the 1979 Homestead Valley sequence, background seismicity from 1981 to 1991, and the 1992 Landers sequence are inverted for the state of stress. In all cases, the intermediate principal stress axis (S2) remained vertical, and changes in the state of stress consisted of variations in the trend of maximum and minimum principal stress axes (S1 and S3) and small variations in the value of the relative stress magnitudes (ϕ). In general, the stress state in the ECSZ has S1 trending east of north and ϕ = 0.43 to 0.65, suggesting that the ECSZ is a moderate stress refractor and the style of faulting is transtensional. South of the Pinto Mountain fault, in the region of the 1992 Joshua Tree earthquake, the stress state determined from the 1981 to 1991 background seismicity changed on 23 April and again on 28 June 1992. In the central zone, S1 rotated from N14° ± 5°E to N28° ± 5°E on 23 April and back again to N16° ± 5°E on 28 June. Thus, the Landers mainshock in effect recharged some of the shear stress in the region of the Mw 6.1 Joshua Tree earthquke. Comparison of the state of stress before and after 28 June 1992, along the Landers mainshock rupture zone, showed that the mainshock changed the stress orientation. The S1 trend rotated 7° to 20° clockwise and became progressively more fault normal from south to north. Along the Emerson-Camp Rock faults, the variation was so prominent that the focal mechanisms of aftershocks could not be fit by a single deviatoric stress tensor. The complex distribution of P and T axes suggests that most of the uniform component of the applied shear stress along the northern part of the rupture zone was released in the mainshock. The San Bernardino Mountains region of the Mw 6.2 Big Bear earthquake has a distinctively different state of stress, as compared to the Landers region, with S1 trending N3° ± 5°W. This region did not show any significant change in the state of stress following the 1992 Mw 6.2 Big Bear sequence.

The paper presents simulations of the state of stress and deformation of the Kilo class submarine hull loaded from pressure wave of non-contact mine explosion. To accomplish the task the finite element method was used. Pressure wave was described by T. L. Geers’a and K. S. Hunter model. The way of modeling the pressure wave using the acoustic medium implemented to CAE programs was shown. To describe the material an elastic-plastic model of Jonson-Cook which takes into account the speed of deformation was used. The paper presents pressure distribution on the Kilo type submarine hull exposed on 100 kg of TNT explosion load in front of the bow of the ship.

AbstractTo evaluate the influence of permeant and temperature exposure on the state of stress in polyimide coatings, uniaxial experiments on thin polyimide films held at constant length were performed. The uniaxially constrained poly(4,4′,-oxidiphenylene pyromellitimide) or PMDA-ODA films were exposed to methylene chloride while the stress was monitored. It was found that the stress was reduced to zero from a stress as high as 40 MPa by the swelling with methylene chloride. Attempts to remove the methylene chloride at room temperature with a nitrogen purge resulted in a stress increase of only 8 MPa. However, the remaining stress of an additional 20 Mpa was recovered when the sample was heated to 350°C and returned to room temperature. Temperature exposures of 150°C and 200°C resulted in a stress increases of only 14 MPa and 17 MPa, respectively. These observations suggest a strong coupling between the stress state, temperature and equilibrium swelling by permeants.

This essay explores the discourse of law that constitutes the controversial apprehension of Cicero's issuing of the ultimate decree of the Senate (senatus consultum ultimum) in Catiline. The play juxtaposes the struggle of Cicero, whose moral character and legitimacy are at stake in regards to the extra-legal uses of espionage, with the supposedly mischievous Catilinarians who appear to observe legal procedures more carefully throughout their plot. To mitigate this ambivalence, the play defends Cicero's actions by depicting the way in which Cicero establishes the rhetoric of public counsel to convince the citizens of his legitimacy in his unprecedented dealing with Catiline. To understand the contemporaneousness of Catiline, I will explore the way the play integrates the early modern discourses of counsel and the legal maxim of ‘better to suffer an inconvenience than mischief,’ suggesting Jonson's subtle sensibility towards King James's legal reformation which aimed to establish and deploy monarchical authority in the state of emergency (such as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605). The play's climactic trial scene highlights the display of the collected evidence, such as hand-written letters and the testimonies obtained through Cicero's spies, the Allbroges, as proof of Catiline's mischievous character. I argue that the tactical negotiating skills of the virtuous and vicious characters rely heavily on the effective use of rhetoric exemplified by both the political discourse of classical Rome and the legal discourse of Tudor and Jacobean England.

This chapter demonstrates that the downwards pressure that state consolidation placed on mass violence was amplified by the type of state that emerged. Across East Asia, governments came to define themselves as “developmental” or “trading” states whose principal purpose was to grow the national economy and thereby improve the economic wellbeing of their citizens. Governments with different ideologies came to embrace economic growth and growing the prosperity of their populations as the principal function of the state and its core source of legitimacy. Despite some significant glitches along the way the adoption of the developmental trading state model has proven successful. Not only have East Asian governments succeeded in lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, the practices and policy orientations dictated by this model helped shift governments and societies away from belligerent practices towards postures that prioritized peace and stability. This reinforced the trend towards greater peacefulness.

This chapter explores a variety of issues central to the turn-of-the-century Austrian panic over trafficking. They include anti-Semitism, Jews as protagonists and victims, and mass migration in an urbanizing world, as well as why particular Austrian cities were associated with the trade in women. The chapter analyzes the government’s domestic and international efforts to combat trafficking, as well as the role bourgeois reform organizations played. It explores the relationship between the trafficker and the trafficked, arguing that these women and girls were not simply victims, but sometimes willing participants, or something in between, in order to sketch a more nuanced picture of turn-of-the-century “white slaving.” The term “trafficker” is employed to reflect the way sources (the state, journalists, reform groups) viewed the issue, not because it can be proved that the problem was as widespread as they claimed.

The state of stress present in an elastic half-plane contact problem, where one or both bodies is subject to remote tension has been investigated, both for conditions of full stick and partial slip. The state of stress present near the contact edges is studied for different loading scenarios in an asymptotic form. This is of practical relevance to the study of contacts experiencing fretting fatigue, and enables the environment in which cracks nucleate to be specified.

AbstractUnderground quarrying is rarely adopted for granite extraction due to the difficulties in the implementation of traditional technologies (drilling and explosive). As alternative to drilling and explosive, the combination of diamond wire and water jet seems to be the most promising available technology. The cutting performance achievable with the water jet technology depends on the operative parameters, the material characteristics and the state of stress within the rock massif. To assess the effect of the state of stress on the cutting rate, laboratory tests have been performed with an oscillating water jet machine on granite samples subjected to a static load. The stress distribution in the layer of rock to be removed has been evaluated by numerical simulation with the FLAC code (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua). The correlation between the results of the cutting tests and the numerical models of the rock samples has been inferred. Starting from a conceptual model, which theoretically describes the relationship between the cutting rate and the stress, a step function was defined that indicates the ranges of stress where predefined values of the cutting rate are workable.
