Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people worldwide and its related complications continue to be of great concern. The outcome of diabetes depends mainly on the patient’s self-management. Health care professionals therefore have a major responsibility to assist patients to acquire the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes towards self-management. A quantitative survey was conducted to identify diabetic patients and family members' knowledge and views about diabetes and its treatment regimen. A convenient sample of 32 diabetics and 32 family members who attended two health care facilities in the Mopani district, Limpopo Province, was drawn. Two similar questionnaires, one for each group respectively, were completed by the subjects. The data was analysed by a computer programme, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Findings revealed that the diabetics and family members lack adequate knowledge on diabetes and its treatment. Recommendations regarding the required health education and assistance to be given to these patients and their family members were made.

BACKGROUND Mobile application has become a new tool for management of chronic disease like diabetes mellitus (DM). Up to date, most of the studies related to mobile application focus on the effectiveness of self-management, rarely take perceptions and experiences of users into account. OBJECTIVE To conduct a meta- synthesis of qualitative researches which associated with mobile application using experiences among diabetic patients in order to better understand those factors which facilitate or hinder patients’ embracement, and to provide recommendations for future mobile application design and disease management strategies. METHODS Literatures focused on experiences and perceptions of users in diabetes application were searched in PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library between inception and June 2018. The Jonna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tool for qualitative studies was utilized to evaluate the quality of the selected studies. The searching results were synthesized by employing Integrating Methods. RESULTS Four studies were included for analysis, 17 findings were subsequently integrated into 6 categories and finally 2 synthesized results were defined, including the use of mobile application for diabetes can improve patients’ self-management and confidence in disease control, obtain more support from health care professionals, and reduce negative emotions; Problems and negative effects in use. CONCLUSIONS Mobile application is a helpful tool to initiate and maintain self-management among diabetic patients and more improvements are necessary for the sake of easy use and effectiveness. Further high-quality qualitative study is needed to better understand requirements and using experience of diabetics, health care professionals or other stakeholders.

The aim of this study was to obtain baseline data from female Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2 DM) patients on their general health status, demographics, their knowledge of and attitudes towards diabetes and exercise, as well as their present physical activity levels.The sample of convenience consisted of 93 patients between the ages of 36 and 70 years, who were attending the Mamelodi Hospital Diabetic Outpatient Clinic.Demographic, clinical, diabetes knowledge, diabetes attitude and physical activity data were captured. Data were summarized with descriptive statistics. Pearson product-moment correlation was employed to assess relationships and Cronbach’s alpha measured reliability.It was found that the sample had a low educational level. (84% schooling up to St 7) Several risk factors for the control of diabetes were identified in the sample. (Class I obesity, HbAI c-levels acceptable to compromised, 75% on treatment for hypertension) They had low scores on knowledge of diabetes ( mean,SD =4.72,2.05 out of 15) and low levels of physical activity. (mean, SD—2.85,2.09) Patients agreed with the attitude in the scale that the health care professionals require skills to educate and counsel diabetic patients, as well as bring about behavioral changes in the patients.( r=0.62) They also agreed that diabetes has a substantial psychosocial impact on their lives. (r=0.41) The highest correlation between to sub-scales was between the need for special training of health care professionals who care for diabetic patients and the psychosocial impact of the disease. (r=0.41) Patients should be educated about the basic physiology of diabetes, insulin action and causes of hypoglycaemia. They should also be motivated to increase physical activity on a continuous basis.Culturally sensitive research is needed to identify health beliefs, motivation for the control of diabetes and environmental and personal barriers to exercise and physical activity in this population.

This study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of diabetes self-management education (DSME) in the improvement of glycemic control among patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka. The study was a prospective interventional study and conducted as a preliminary study at medical clinic, Base hospital, Kaluwanchikudy, Batticaloa. Thirty patients with T2DM were included based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. A structured individual diabetes self-management education for 10 hours (one hour per week) was delivered to diabetic patients by the trained Nurse Health Educator. Glycosylate hemoglobin (HbA1c) was assessed as a main outcome measure and Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Body Mass Index (BMI) of each patient were also measured and recorded before and after the intervention. The respondent rate was 96.7% (n = 29). Majority of them were females (n = 25, 86.2%). A Wilcoxon signed rank test showed that DSME had a statistically significant reduction in HbA1c [8.60 (IQR 2.60) vs. 7.40 (IQR 2.10), p = .000] and FBS level [159.00 (IQR 77.50) vs. 134.00 (IQR 40.50), p = .002] at 3 months of intervention. The mean BMI at baseline was higher compared to 3 months of intervention [24.88 (SD ± 3.06) vs. 24.19 (SD ± 2.79)] which was statistically significant (p = .000). Majority of participants (n = 22, 75.9%) had improved their HbA1c level by ≥ 0.5% in 3 months. The diabetes self-management education is an effective measure in improving glycemic control and other clinical parameters among patients with T2DM. Thus, DSME needs to be implemented among clinic patients with T2DM for the better outcome and the preventions of complications.

The former Transkei is a predominantly rural region of the Eastern Cape Province. The poor infrastructure in this area results in inaccessibility of the available health services. The majority is ill equipped to deliver optimum diabetes care. There is an increase of lower limb amputations and lack of knowledge among patients with diabetes mellitus in the former Transkei. These complications can be prevented by patient education on self-management and appropriate footcare procedures. This qualitative study was conducted to explore and describe the experiences and footcare practices of diabetic patients who live in the rural areas of Transkei.

Medical waste management is of crucial importance in health care facilities (HCF). In the present study, we assessed the knowledge, attitude and practices of medical waste management in an HCF of Sulaimani city, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Using a self-administered questionnaire, we collected information on waste management practices from health care professionals (HCP) in 14 public and private hospitals and 10 primary health care centers of the city. Based on answers, total knowledge score on a 10-point scale was established. A total of 406 HCPs (of those, 261 women), average age 37.3 (SD ± 9.4) years participated. Just 20.3% have been trained on medical waste management. The total knowledge score ranged from 0 to 9 with a mean of 4.7 (SD ± 1.8).  Factors which were significantly associated with the better knowledge score was male gender, having a high educational degree, being trained in waste management and has been in service for more than 5 years. 68% of HCPs followed the color coding system, 91% always/frequently disposed used sharps/needles to safety boxes, 79% always or frequently recapped needles, 49% reported experiencing at least one needle prick injury during their work but only 37% of them had reported the injury to a supervisor and only 4% of those injured had filled an injury form. There is a low average level of knowledge and the unsafe risky practices are quite prevalent in HCFs. Provision of appropriate training on dealing with medical waste is essential to promote safe practices among HCFs.

BACKGROUND Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) require regular follow-ups and overall management to normalize maternal blood glucose and improve pregnancy outcomes. With the advancements made in the digital field, telemedicine is gaining popularity over traditional health care approaches in different medical fields. As for GDM, telemonitoring solutions seem to improve women’s quality of life and enhance self-management. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to understand, from patients’ and health care professionals’ (HCPs) perspectives, what drives the adoption and diffusion of a telemonitoring solution (myDiabby) in a context where telemonitoring activities are still not compensated like traditional follow-ups. METHODS The study was conducted in 12 diabetes services in France using myDiabby for monitoring and managing patients with GDM. A qualitative research approach was adopted for collecting and analyzing data. A total of 20 semistructured interviews were conducted with HCPs working in different health structures in France, and 15 semistructured interviews were conducted with patients who had been using myDiabby. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. RESULTS Different determinants need to be taken into consideration when adopting an innovative health technology. By drawing on the diffusion of innovation theory, a set of factors associated with the technology (the relative advantages, compatibility, ease of use, testability, and observability of the telemedicine platform) has been identified as affecting the adoption and diffusion of telemonitoring solutions in French diabetes services. In addition, data analysis shows a set of environmental factors (the demographic situation of HCPs, the health care access in rural communities, and the economic and political context in France) that also influences the spread and adoption of telemonitoring systems in French hospitals. CONCLUSIONS Even though telemonitoring activities are still not remunerated as traditional follow-ups, many French HCPs support and encourage the adoption of telemonitoring systems in GDM. As for patients, telemonitoring systems are perceived as a useful and easy way to monitor their GDM. This study contributes to recognizing the value of telemonitoring interventions in managing GDM and considering the expansion of telemonitoring to other chronic conditions.

Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is a public health concern worldwide. TeleHealth technology may be an effective tool for empowering patients in the self-management of diabetes mellitus. However despite the great impact of diabetes on healthcare in Saudi Arabia, no research has investigated diabetic patients’ willingness to use this technology. This study investigates diabetic patients’ willingness to use tele-technology as a tool to monitor their disease.Methods:  Data were collected from diabetic patients attending the diabetes education clinic at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (MNGHA) in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia over a three month period. A survey was developed which measured patients’ willingness to use tele-technology in the self-management of their diabetes as well as their perceived expectations from the technology.Results: The study found that the majority of patients were willing to use tele-technology to self- monitor their diabetes. However, a minority (11.3%) indicated willingness to use the system daily and only half indicated preference to use it once a week (53.8%). Patients who were younger, had higher education levels, were employed, had internet access and had Type II diabetes were significantly more likely to report willingness to use the technology.Conclusions: Diabetic patients could be ready to play a more active role in their care if given the opportunity. Results from this study could serve as a baseline for future studies to develop targeted interventions by trialing tele-technology on a sample of the diabetic population. Background: Type-2 diabetes mellitus, a non-communicable disease contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality in South Africa. It is considered a silent epidemic in certain countries in the world with the incidence expected to rapidly escalate due to ageing of the population. Little is known about the treatment outcome from Primary Health Care facilities in SA. The study estimated control and determinants of diabetes control among rural black patients attended a PHC facility. Method: A cross-sectional prospective design was adopted. Chi-square test was carried out to find significant association between dependent and independent variables. Forward stepwise logistic regression was performed to determine the significant predictor for diabetes control. Two-sided statistical tests were performed at 0.05 level of significance. Result: A total of 240 DM patients were recruited and (68.7%) of them had HbA1c level measured) and only 49 (29.7%) were found with glycaemic control. Logistic regression analysis showed that patients those read newspaper daily or almost daily were almost three times (OR=2.6) more likely to have control. Patients those measured the blood sugar at home were 4.4 times more likely to have their diabetes controlled. It was found that knowing normal blood sugar had four times more chances of controlling their diabetes than those did not know. Duration of DM treatment (5-9 years) was 60% less likely to have DM control that those had 10 or more years of DM treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Glycaemic control of DM was poor and identified several factors towards diabetes control among DM patient. Training and education to healthcare workers and DM patients may lead to improve DM control.
