Prodrug entrapment into nanocarriers for tumor delivery is a strategy to achieve a valid therapy with high efficiency. The prodrug contains anticancer agents conjugating with functional moieties or ligands so that the active component is released after metabolism in the body or tumor. The advantages of nanosystems for loading prodrugs include high loading, increased prodrug stability, improved bioavailability and enhanced targeting to tumor cells. In the present article, we introduce the prodrug delivery approaches according to nanomedicine and the recent advances in prodrug-loaded nanocarriers. First, we discuss the conceptional design of combined prodrugs and nanocarriers in response to the obstruction in anticancer therapy. Then we describe the cases of prodrug-loaded nanoparticles for cancer treatment during the past 5 years.

Samuel Beckett's interest in the experience of memory and the central role the body plays in the re-experience of the past has been most evident since the time he composed Krapp's Last Tape (1958), one of his most famous memory plays where the body can actually ‘touch’ its voice of memory. In this context, the present article provides a close reading of two of Beckett's late works for the theatre, namely That Time (1976) and Ohio Impromptu (1981), where the author once again addresses the relationship between the body and memory. Unlike his earlier drama, however, in That Time and Ohio Impromptu Beckett creates a ‘distance’, as it were, between memory and the body on stage by presenting the former as a narrative and by reducing the latter to an isolated part or by restricting it to limited movements. Looking closely at this ‘distance’ in these late plays, the article underlines that the body does not lose its authority or remains passive in its re-experience of the past. Rather – the article argues – the body essentially plays a determining role in these stripped-down forms as is shown in its ability to ‘interrupt’ and somatically punctuate the fixity of the narrative form memory takes in these works.

Abstract:Purine nucleoside analogs have been in clinical use for almost 50 years. At the beginning developed as antiviral agents, later their efficacy was demonstrated in cancer treatment, especially hematological malignances. The approval of new purine nucleoside analogs by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the past decade implies that the interest for these drugs still exists. Here, we review new nucleoside analogs that are currently in preclinical or clinical development as anticancer agents. In addition, we highlight the potential for implementation of these drugs in other pathological conditions, particularly in neuroinflammation.

It is well known that progressiveness of the damping characteristic of vehicle suspension is a highly desirable feature that substantially improves shock absorption transmitted from the road wheels to the body of a vehicle. It is also well known that progressive rate vehicle suspensions with smooth (i.e. differentiable) damping characteristic commonly in use are pneumatic and hydro-pneumatic ones. However, these suspensions are inferior to steel ones in many aspects such as strength, durability, reliability and cost, and their damping characteristic, being determined by the thermodynamic properties (adiabatic exponent) of the gas (air or nitrogen) they utilize, cannot be freely adjusted and is far from optimum. There are also some progressive rate vehicle suspensions fitted with steel springs, but they usually features inferior non-differentiable damping characteristic. The problem of constructing purely mechanical steel progressive rate vehicle suspension has been undertaken by many inventors, but none of such suspensions proposed in the past was a success. This is due to the fact that those suspensions used unreliable and perishable cam mechanisms to achieve required non-linearity of damping characteristic. In the present article we briefly discuss an innovative recently patented [1-4] vehicle suspension, that produces progressive rate smooth damping characteristic out of linear characteristic of steel spring of any kind, which damping characteristic can be adjusted to any specific requirements, and which features extraordinarily compact and robust structure. It is to be stressed that the suspension presented in this paper has yet not been tested in a vehicle, but some measurements has been made using a steel model of a "flat" version of the suspension mechanism proving general assumptions behind the design.

This interest is partly due to the increasing realization of the important role of platelets in the body, not only during hemostasis but in other physiological processes such as phagocytosis, inflammation, immunological reactions and interaction with tumor cells. Platelet activation is regulated by specific mechanisms, many of which are unknown.

Cancers are life threatening diseases and their traditional treatment strategies have numerous limitations which include poor pharmacokinetic profiles, non-specific drug distribution in the body tissues and organs and deprived tumor cells penetration. This attracted the attention of researchers to tailor efficient drug delivery system for anticancer agents to overcome these limitations. Liposomes are one of the newly developed delivery systems for anticancer agents. They are vesicular structures, which were fabricated to enhance drug targeting to tumor tissues either via active or passive targeting. They can be tailored to penetrate tumor cells membrane which is considered the main rate limiting step in antineoplastic therapy. This resulted in enhancing drug cellular uptake and internalization and increasing drug cytotoxic effect. These modifications were achieved via various approaches which included the use of cell-penetrating peptides, the use of lipid substances that can increase liposome fusogenic properties or increase the cell membrane permeability toward amphiphilic drugs, surface modification or ligand targeted liposomes and immuno-liposomes. The modified liposomes were able to enhance anticancer agent’s cellular uptake and this was reflected in their ability to destroy tumor tissues. This review outlines different approaches employed for liposomes modification for enhancing anticancer agent’s cellular uptake.

Over the past thirty years, academic debate over pornography in the discourses of feminism and cultural studies has foundered on questions of the performative and of the word's definition. In the polylogue of Droit de regards, pornography is defined as la mise en vente that is taking place in the act of exegesis in progress. (Wills's idiomatic English translation includes an ‘it’ that is absent in the French original). The definition in Droit de regards alludes to the word's etymology (writing by or about prostitutes) but leaves the referent of the ‘sale’ suspended. Pornography as la mise en vente boldly restates the necessary iterability of the sign and anticipates two of Derrida's late arguments: that there is no ‘the’ body and that performatives may be powerless. Deriving a definition of pornography from a truncated etymology exemplifies the prosthesis of origin and challenges other critical discourses to explain how pornography can be understood as anything more than ‘putting (it) up for sale’.

This article investigates the ways in which the work of The Body Politic (TBP), the first major lesbian and gay newspaper in Canada, comes to be commemorated in queer publics and how it figures in the memories of those who were involved in producing the paper. In revisiting a critical point in the history of TBP from 1985 when controversy erupted over race and racism within the editorial collective, this discussion considers the role of memory in the reproduction of whiteness and in the rupture of standard narratives about the past. As the controversy continues to haunt contemporary queer activism in Canada, the productive work of memory must be considered an essential aspect of how, when and for what reasons the work of TBP comes to be commemorated. By revisiting the events of 1985 and by sifting through interviews with individuals who contributed to the work of TBP, this article complicates the narrative of TBP as a bluntly racist endeavour whilst questioning the white privilege and racially-charged demands that undergird its commemoration. The work of producing and preserving queer history is a vital means of challenging the intentional and strategic erasure of queer existence, but those who engage in such efforts must remain attentive to the unequal terrain of social relations within which remembering forms its objects.

Examination of the term stress in naturally occurring vernacular prose provides evidence of three separate senses being conflated. A corpus analysis of 818 instances of stress from non-academic texts in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the Corpus of American Discourses on Health (CADOH) shows a negative prosody for stress, which is portrayed variously as a source outside the body, a physical symptom within the body and an emotional state. The data show that contemporary speakers intermingle the three senses, making more difficult a discussion between doctors and patients of ways to ‘reduce stress’, when stress might be interpreted as a stressor, a symptom, or state of anxiety. This conflation of senses reinforces the impression that stress is pervasive and increasing. In addition, a semantic shift is also refining a new sense for stress, as post-traumatic stress develops as a specific subtype of emotional stress whose use has increased in circulation in the past 20 years.

Computational tools have been used to study the photophysical and photochemical features of photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT) –a minimally invasive, less aggressive alternative for cancer treatment. PDT is mainly based by the activation of molecular oxygen through the action of a photoexcited sensitizer (photosensitizer). Temoporfin, widely known as mTHPC, is a second-generation photosensitizer, which produces the cytotoxic singlet oxygen when irradiated with visible light and hence destroys tumor cells. However, the bioavailability of the mostly hydrophobic photosensitizer, and hence its incorporation into the cells, is fundamental to achieve the desired effect on malignant tissues by PDT. In this study, we focus on the optical properties of the temoporfin chromophore in different environments –in <i>vacuo</i>, in solution, encapsulated in drug delivery agents, namely cyclodextrin, and interacting with a lipid bilayer.
