Abstract This paper analyzes the role of social media in electoral processes and contemporary political life. We analyze Costa Rica’s 2018 presidential election from an agenda-setting perspective, studying the media, the political and the public agendas, and their relationships. We explore whether social media, Facebook specifically, can convey an agenda-setting effect; if social media public agenda differs from the traditional MIP public agenda; and what agenda-setting methodologies can benefit from new approaches in the social media context. The study revealed that social media agendas are complex and dynamic and, in this case, did not present an agenda-setting effect. We not only found that the social media public agenda does not correlate with the conventional MIP public agenda, but that neither does the media online agenda and the media’s agenda on Facebook. Our exploration of more contemporary methods like big data, social network analysis (SNA), and social media mining point to them as necessary complements to the traditional methodological proposal of agenda-setting theory which have become insufficient to explain the current media environment.

Abstract This article analyzes the close relationship between religion (i.e. religious discourses in the context of everyday life) and modernization (i.e. the intensive and excessive use of social media in society). This article is based on literature and social media review—in particular it reviews on how the role of religion changed drastically due to mediatization process that occurs in the public sphere; as well as how the social media plays a dynamic role in society. This article concludes that the new image of religion as shown in mass media and social media demonstrates its shifting power from traditional institutions to mass and social media. Religious value immerses into every aspect of the everyday life and the religious aura; and this phenomenon neglects the secularization theory.

Social media brings to the forefront two very important factors to today's politics: the prominent role of the internet and the importance of personalisation which is closely tied to a tendency of political candidates to overexpose their private lives. This does not mean that the candidate becomes more relevant than the political party or the ideological platforms thereof, but the interest tends to fall on the candidate's lifestyle; on their personal characteristics and their most intimate surroundings, which blurs the line between the public and private spheres. Online profiles are used as a showcase for the public agenda of the politician at the same time as they gather, on a daily basis, the thoughts, tastes and leisure time activities of the candidates. This chapter offers a reflection of the ways in which political leaders develop their digital narratives, and how they use the social media environment to approach citizens.

Our scope was to explain the failure of the Referendum on the revision of Article 48 of the Romanian Constitution, regarding the definition of family (held in 2018 and known as the "traditional family referendum"). We hypothesized that in Romania the traditional family has become a "zombie" category, unable to produce an authentic mobilization of the social-political actors. Still, the traditional family represents an anchor that counteracts insecurity and anxiety caused by the "risk society" in which we live. This function is capitalized by social-political actors as a source of their legitimation. Our understanding was based on the processual analysis of this issue on the public agenda, from inflammation to extinction. This analysis clearly showed the process of gradual demobilization of the actors involved.

In conducting agribusiness, young farmers are connected with each other in a farmer group. Cooperation becomes the major requirement for maintaining their existence. Furthermore, in the digital era, many people use the internet to help their work and present it to the public through social media. Additionally, to develop their agribusiness, young farmers develop good relationships with extension workers who assist them and connect them to the government. Meanwhile, the government develops policies and supporting materials for young farmers such as fertilizer. Therefore, based on this phenomenon, this quantitative research is aimed at understanding young farmers’ cooperation behavior, especially in using social media in supporting their agribusiness and whether there is difference in cooperation between those utilizing social media and those who do not. It employed 39 young farmers in Kalasan and Prambanan Subdistrict who plant chili as horticulture commodities. It showed that young farmers’ cooperation was described in their activities on seedling, irrigation, crops maintaining, and marketing, but their cooperation practice was not high. On the other hand, they did not always use social media and Kolmogorov Smirnov’s analysis resulted that there was not any difference in cooperation practice due to the social media application. Moreover, not all of them were familiar with social media in the implementation of agribusiness. In this case, they need more assistance from extension workers so they should introduce social media as part of agribusiness to all of young farmers through agricultural extensions to connect young farme the worldwide.
