After the promulgation of the Character Education Promotion Act, one is left asking the question: is character education, which is currently being conducted in all directions and at all levels, from elementary schools to universities, actually succeeding in reversing the deteriorating character failures seen throughout society? I think it’s fair to say that it would be difficult for anyone to answer this question positively. Nevertheless, research papers boasting the many successes of character education have continued to pour in. How can this disparity be explained? In order to adequately answer this question, one must understand that character education is missing a key component. Therefore, we need to reexamine the fundamental premise of the discourses and programs surrounding character education in its various applications, both before and after the promulgation of the Character Education Promotion Act. This paper intends to propose ‘minimalistic character education’ as a new paradigm of character education-one that will replace the fundamental premise found in the type of character education we’ve been implementing thus far. Briefly put, minimalistic character education starts by changing the paradigm: “Basically, doing is better than not doing” to the paradigm: “Basically, not doing is better than doing.” This new paradigm will enable us to overcome the paradox found in the current manifestation of character education by preventing it from becoming a key link in the vicious cycle of avoiding responsibility.

The tolerance attitude of Indonesian people today are beginning to fade, along with the increasing cases of intolerance in our society, including in the education field. Issues such as abuse, fights, and bullying are examples of intolerant attitudes that are increasing nowadays. Education at the elementary school level is the foundation for the formation of children's character so that at this level, knowledge is essential to teach tolerance. One method that is proven effective for instilling character education is storytelling using Wayang Kancil. So, this method needs to test for its effectiveness in establishing a tolerance for elementary students. The purpose of this study is to find out whether storytelling using Wayang Kancil can improve tolerance for elementary students. This study used a quasi-experimental method, which involved two elementary schools as an experimental group and a control group. The storyteller gives the stimulus of storytelling using Wayang Kancil. Tolerance measurements in subjects were carried out both before and after the administration of treatment. Measurements are made by providing a scale of tolerance. This study using a non-parametric statistical analysis Mann-Whitney U Test. This test is to find out whether there are differences in patience in the experimental group and the control group, namely pretest, and posttest. The results showed significant differences between tolerance in the experimental group and the control group (p = 0.008, α <0.05). Tolerance attitude in the experimental group after being given the storytelling, the results were higher than the control group Sikap toleransi pada Bangsa Indonesia dewasa ini mulai memudar, seiring meningkatnya kasus-kasus intoleransi di tengah-tengah masyarakat, termasuk pada dunia pendidikan.

AbstractMany systems are today modelled as complex networks, since this representation has been proven being an effective approach for understanding and controlling many real-world phenomena. A significant area of interest and research is that of networks robustness, which aims to explore to what extent a network keeps working when failures occur in its structure and how disruptions can be avoided. In this paper, we introduce the idea of exploiting long-range links to improve the robustness of Scale-Free (SF) networks. Several experiments are carried out by attacking the networks before and after the addition of links between the farthest nodes, and the results show that this approach effectively improves the SF network correct functionalities better than other commonly used strategies.

Abstract Background Sanitizing the operating theatres (OT) is important to minimize risk of post-operative infections. Disinfection procedures between one operation and another is less aggressive than final cleaning procedures, at the end of the day. Aim was assessing the difference of contamination: i) between different levels of disinfection; ii) before and after the use of a UVC Device (UVC-D). Methods Between December 2019/February 2020 a cross sectional study was conducted in OT in a real clinical context. 94 Petri dishes (PD) were used in 3 OT. Three different sanitation levels (SL1-3) were compared pre- and post-use of UVC-D: i) No cleaning after surgery (SL1); ii) after in-between cleaning (SL2); iii) after terminal cleaning (SL3). UVC-D was employed for 6 minutes, 3 minutes per bed side. PD were incubated at 36 °C and colony forming unit (CFU) counted at 48h. Descriptive statistic, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were performed to assess the contamination levels in total, pre/post use of UVC-D, and between different sanitation levels, respectively. Results In total we had a mean of 3.39 CFU/PD (C.I. 2.05 - 4.74) and a median of 1 CFU/PD (Min. 0 - Max. 39), after UVC-D use we had a mean of 2.20 CFU/PD (C.I. 0.69 - 5.09) and a median of 0 CFU/PD (Min. 0 - Max. 133). The UVC-D led to a significant reduction of CFU (p < 0.001). Without UVC-D we had a significant CFU drop (p < 0.05) between SL1 and SL3. Using UVC-D, we observed significant reductions of contamination (p < 0.05) between SL3 and SL1. Comparing SL1 (median 0) post UVC-D use vs SL2 pre UVC-D use (median 0.5), and SL2 post UVC-D use (median 0) vs SL3 pre UVC-D use (median 1) we had a significant reduction of contamination (p < 0.05). Conclusions UVC-D improved environmental contamination in any of the three sanitation levels. Furthermore, the use of UVC-D alone was better than in-between and terminal cleaning. Although these encouraging results, the cleaning procedures executed by dedicated staff has to be considered. Key messages UVC are efficient to decrease contamination in operating theatres regardless of sanitation levels. The additional use of UVC technology to standard cleaning procedures significantly improves sanitation levels.

We tested the hypothesis that pigeons could use a cognitively efficient coding strategy by training them on a conditional discrimination (delayed symbolic matching) in which one alternative was correct following the presentation of one sample (one-to-one), whereas the other alternative was correct following the presentation of any one of four other samples (many-to-one). When retention intervals of different durations were inserted between the offset of the sample and the onset of the choice stimuli, divergent retention functions were found. With increasing retention interval, matching accuracy on trials involving any of the many-to-one samples was increasingly better than matching accuracy on trials involving the one-to-one sample. Furthermore, following this test, pigeons treated a novel sample as if it had been one of the many-to-one samples. The data suggest that rather than learning each of the five sample-comparison associations independently, the pigeons developed a cognitively efficient single-code/default coding strategy.

I am extremely grateful, and humbled, by the wealth of comments received on my AJIL article through this AJIL Unbound Symposium. One of the many points I take away from these reactions is, indeed, that my analysis offers a snapshot and that many of the critiques now leveled against Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) are, in Catherine Rogers’s words, “effectively recycled versions of criticisms that were originally leveled against the WTO and its decision-makers.” (Freya Baetens makes a similar point.)In this rejoinder, I would only like to make two points. Firstly, many commentators seem to think that in this article I took the normative position that World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement is “better” than ISDS. Although I did point to the current discrepancy in public perception of the respective regimes, I purposefully avoided expressing any personal, normative position on one being “better” than the other (but apparently not explicitly enough).
