In March 2020, the World Health Organisation declares a pandemic of infection with the novel coronavirus (nCoV) COVID-19 and on 23rd of April the first official report on its evolution and effects emerges. A state of medical emergency and quarantine is imposed in all affected countries. This study proposed a research of what parenting entails and which are the implications of parenting in a crisis context for young people, particularly how perceived parental support and perceived support work on the relationship between stress on one hand, and depression and anxiety on the other hand, especially for those who study online due to context. The proposed sample consists of 104 students aged 18 to 25. Participants self-reported on their attitude towards online school, perceived stress levels, perceived parental and maternal support and anxiety and depression levels. The procedure consists of completing online questionnaires. The statistical procedure used is the mediation analysis. The results show that there is a partial mediation effect of perceived parental support and perceived parental support in the relationship between stress and anxiety, and the attitude towards the online academic races leave to an increase in perceived stress levels. These results could be used for programs to prevent the negative effects associated with online school and the effects of long-term social isolation, as well as for psychological education and parenting programs in emergency situation.

Abstract The relationship between parental support and physical activity enjoyment appears to be mediated by individual-level factors. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between perceived parental support and physical activity enjoyment is mediated by overweight and obese adolescents’ physical fitness, both subjectively and objectively assessed. A total of 163 participants (mean age =14.30 years, 55.8% boys) with an average body mass index of 28.97 kg/m2 took part in this study. Participants completed a questionnaire of parental influence regarding physical activity, a questionnaire of physical self-perception and several fitness tests (cardiorespiratory fitness, lower limbs muscular strength and flexibility) using the ALPHA-fitness battery. The results showed that relationship between perceived parental support and physical activity enjoyment is mediated by the overweight and obese adolescents’ perceived cardiorespiratory fitness and flexibility. We suggest to create educational guidelines for parents to increase the support and improve overweight and obese students’ positive perceived physical competence, in order to achieve a greater adherence to physical activity and greater physical activity enjoyment.

Abstract Introduction South Korea maintains a mandatory military duty, and high percentage of conscript soldiers have difficulty adjusting to military life. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of the stress response on the relationship between soldiers’ perceived stress and military life adjustment and to clarify the moderating effect of cohesion on this relationship. Materials and Methods The study’s participants were 285 Korean military soldiers who are obliged to serve in the military and they completed the Perceived Stress Scale, the Stress Response Scale, the Military Life Adjustment, and the Group Cohesion Scale. Analysis methods included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, path analysis, bootstrapping, collinearity statistic, and hierarchical regression analysis. This research obtained the approval of the institutional review board of the university (HYI-18-229-1). Results First, a partial mediation effect of the stress response was found in the relationship between soldiers’ perceived stress and military life adjustment. That is, a high level of soldiers’ perceived stress was related to their military life maladjustment. Moreover, the greater the level of soldiers’ perceived stress, the greater the stress response, and, in turn, the greater the military life maladjustment. Second, we found the moderating effect of cohesion in the relationship between stress perception and military life adjustment. Conclusions The stress perceived by soldiers not only directly affects their military life adjustment but also indirectly affects their adjustment through the stress responses. In addition, soldiers’ levels of adjustment to military life change significantly based on cohesion levels only when they perceive less stress.

Perceived stress is the degree of stress experienced by an individual in the face of a stressor. Studies have shown that stress affects emotions, leads to behavioral changes, and is likely to trigger physical illnesses. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress is classified as a health epidemic of the 21st century; in the meantime, the percentage of adults being overweight and with obesity has continued to grow after reaching 38.9% in 2016. Hence, it is unclear whether perceived stress has become a factor affecting progressive obesity and whether food addiction (FA) is an intermediate factor. The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate the FA prevalence among young adults in Taiwan, (2) understand correlations among perceived stress, FA, and the body mass index (BMI), and (3) determine the potential mediating effect of FA due to perceived stress on BMI. The study was conducted through an online questionnaire, composed of a basic data form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS). We received 1994 responses and analyzed 1780 valid samples. Results showed that 231 participants met the FA criteria, accounting for 12.98%. Perceived stress was positively correlated with BMI (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.013~0.088, p-value 7.8 × 10−3), and perceived stress was positively associated to FA (95% CI 1.099~1.154, p-value < 10−4), which was also positively correlated with BMI (95% CI 0.705~2.176, p-value 10−4). FA significantly mediated the relationship between PSS and BMI with an indirect effect size of 25.18% and 25.48% in the group that scored 31~40 on the PSS. The study concluded that among people seeking weight loss, proper stress management and screening for FA in order to apply related therapies may be an effective method for weight management.

The range of students ages are 18 – 24 years have a responsibility as students at college susceptible to stress even if exaggeration can trigger suicidal ideation.Suicide data for students aged 18-26 in America in 2016 reached 1,000 people/year, while in Indonesia the national death rate from suicide during the year of 2016 recorded 1,800 cases. Preliminary study results on 30 students: 45% think unable to continue life, 20% thought hopeless, 5% Think to harm themselves and 30% Have positive think to against stress. Objective: To determine the relationship of stress levels with suicide ideas in students. Research method used correlational quantitative research methods and purposive sampling techniques with a sample count of 250 respondents. Research instruments uses perceived stress scale valid (0.84) and reliable (Cronbach α 0.85) and Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (&gt;1.96) reliable (Cronbach α 0.97). Results found the highest stress levels in the moderate stress category (80.0%) and the majority of suicidal ide ideas have a minimum risk (77.2), and there is a link between stress and suicidal dealing with a p-value of 0.048. Further research related to the application of adaptive stress coping and the provision of social support to students.<p><strong>BAHASA INDONESIA </strong>Mahasiswa yang termasuk dalam rentang usia 18-24 tahun memiliki tanggung jawab sebagai pelajar di Perguruan Tinggi rentan mengalami stres berlebihan sehingga dapat memicu ide bunuh diri. Data bunuh diri pada mahasiswa usia 18-26 di Amerika pada tahun 2016 mencapai 1.000 jiwa/tahun sedangkan data di Indonesia, angka kematian nasional akibat bunuh diri selama satu tahun terakhir pada tahun 2016 tercatat sebanyak 1.800 kasus. Studi pendahuluan pada 30 mahasiswa didapatkan sebanyak 45% berpikir tidak sanggup melanjutkan hidup, 20% berpikir putus asa, 5% berpikir menyakiti diri dan 30% berpikir positif terhadap stres. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui hubungan tingkat stres dengan ide bunuh diri pada mahasiswa. Menggunakan metode kuantitatif korelasional dan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling dengan jumlah sampel 250 responden. Instrumen penelitian yakni Perceived Stress Scale yang valid (0,84) dan reliabel (Cronbach α 0,85) dan Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire yang valid (&gt;1,96) reliabel (Cronbach α 0,97). Hasil penelitian didapatkan tingkat stres terbanyak pada kategori stres sedang (80,0%) dan tingkat ide bunuh diri dengan mayoritas memiliki risiko minimal (77,2), serta terdapat hubungan antara stres dengan ide bunuh diri dengan hasil p value 0,048. Sympathetic neural responses to mental stress are well documented but controversial, whereas sympathetic neural responses to emotional stress are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate neural and cardiovascular responses to emotional stress evoked by negative pictures and reexamine the relationship between muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and perceived stress. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), MSNA, and perceived stress levels were recorded in 18 men during three randomized trials: 1) neutral pictures, 2) negative pictures, and 3) mental stress. MAP and HR increased during mental stress (Δ14 ± 2 mmHg and Δ15 ± 2 beats/min, P < 0.001) but did not change during viewing of negative or neutral pictures. MSNA did not change during viewing of neutral (Δ1 ± 1 burst/min, n = 16) or negative (Δ0 ± 1 burst/min, n = 16) pictures or during mental stress (Δ1 ± 2 burst/min, n = 13). Perceived stress levels were higher during mental stress (3 ± 0 arbitrary units) than during viewing negative pictures (2 ± 0 arbitrary units, P < 0.001). Perceived stress levels were not correlated to changes in MSNA during negative pictures ( r = 0.10, P = 0.84) or mental stress ( r = 0.36, P = 0.23). In conclusion, our results demonstrate robust increases in MAP and HR during mental stress, but not during emotional stress evoked by negative pictures. Although the influence of mental stress on MSNA remains unresolved, our findings challenge the concept that perceived stress levels modulate MSNA during mental stress.

Loneliness perception during adolescence has been increased dramatically in recent years. Changes in lifestyle and difficulties in social interaction could explain this increased phenomenon. As described in previous research, this fact has been associated with the development of high stress levels and dysfunctional lifestyles, in which eating habits play a main role. In this regard, loneliness has been classically associated with poor eating habits, fundamentally the consumption of processed food with little nutritional value. However, the relationship between loneliness and healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean Diet (MD), has not been previously analyzed. The main aim of the present study was to identify the relationship between perceived loneliness, stress, dietary habits, and adherence to the MD in a sample of 527 Spanish adolescents. The obtained results show a significant association between high perceived loneliness and high stress levels with lower MD adherence. Hence, adolescents with high perceived loneliness exhibit poor dietary habits in comparison to those counterparts with low perceived loneliness. Mediation analyses demonstrated an indirect effect of the loneliness on adherence to the MD through the mediation effect of stress. These findings point out a possible mechanism that underlies the classic association between loneliness and health deterioration, based on a poor adherence to a healthy dietary pattern, such as the MD.

Stress is a common problem in modern life. Most Malaysian students suffer from high stress levels and poor sleep quality without realising their harmfulness to health and well-being. The major focus of the paper is to examine the relationship between stress and sleep quality among Cognitive Science undergraduate students. This paper also investigates if demographic attributes (gender differences and year of study) affect stress level and sleep quality. The participants of this study comprised 90 Cognitive Science undergraduate students studying at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.  Data was collected by using the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (Perceived Stress Scale) and Sleep Quality Questionnaire (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). The results of the study showed that there was a weak relationship between stress and sleep quality. Those in the poor sleep category reported higher levels of perceived stress. Moreover, the findings showed that female students had higher stress levels than male students. First year students appeared to experience poorer sleep quality compared to final year students. The study also found no interaction effects between gender and year of study on sleep quality and stress. Further research could be conducted with a bigger population size and in other study programs. Future research could also assess non-demographic factors which might influence stress and sleep quality.

Background: While everyone can be affected by stress, there is evidence to suggest that students might be more prone.Objective: To assess perceived stress levels and well-being among undergraduate pharmacy students’ of Ahmadu Bello University, in addition to identifying common stressors and coping mechanisms used by the students.Methods: A survey was conducted on second to fifth year undergraduate pharmacy students of the institution from August to November 2019. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data about the students’ socio-demographic characteristics, stress levels (Perceived Stress Scale-10), well-being (World Health Organization-5 well-being index), stressors and coping strategies. Student t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson’s bivariate correlation were used to compare means and correlations between variables. P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.Results: Of the 350-questionnaire distributed, 328 were returned producing a 93.7% response rate. Majority of respondents were males (63.1%), and in their third year of study (29.3%). The mean PSS-10 score was 18.4 ± 4.9, and a statistically significant difference in scores were seen across gender (p= 0.001). Over half of the participants (72.8%) also scored 51% or higher on the WHO-5 index. Their most common stressors were volume of course materials 184 (56.1%) and financial constraints 158 (48.2%) respectively. More than half of respondents (64.5%) also sought for emotional support from their families to cope with stress. A statistically significant (p<0.001) negative weak correlation (-0.3) was seen when PSS-10 and WHO-5 scores were compared.Conclusion: Perceived stress levels in female undergraduate pharmacy students were higher than those in their male counterparts, and most of the students had at least good well-being.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created great uncertainty around the world, and due to the pandemic, nurses have been exposed to an increase in highly stressful clinical situations. This study examines the relationships between perceived stress and emotional disorders among nurses who have provided direct patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic and explores the mediating role of resilience in these relationships. In an online cross-sectional design, we asked Spanish nurses (N = 214) to complete self-reported scales, and we performed correlation and mediation analyses between perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale, PSS-4), resilience (Wagnild Resilience Scale, RS-14), wellbeing (World Health Organization Wellbeing Index, five items, WHO-5), anxiety (PHQ-2) and depression (GAD-2). The nurses self-reported moderate levels of perceived stress, considerable psychological distress and high resilience. We found resilience to be significantly negatively correlated with the reported levels of perceived stress, anxiety and depression (p < 0.001). The mediating analysis revealed that resilience played a protective role in the direct relationships of stress with depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. To conclude, our findings supported the hypothesis that resilience mediated the relationship between stress and mental health.
