The development of coronavirus infection outbreak into a pandemic, coupled with the lack of effective COVID-19 therapies, is a challenge for the entire pharmaceutical industry. This study aimed to assess the treatment and preventive efficacy of the amino acid-peptide complex (APC) in male Syrian hamsters infected with SARSCoV-2 (intranasal administration of 26 μl of the virus culture, titer of 4 × 104 TCD50/ml). In a modeled COVID-19 case, APC administered for treatment and preventive purposes reduced lung damage. Compared to the positive control group, test group had the lung weight factor 15.2% smaller (trend), which indicates a less pronounced edema. Microscopic examination revealed no alveolar edema, atypical hypertrophied forms of type II alveolocytes, pulmonary parenchyma fibrinization. The macrophage reaction intensified, which is probably a result of the APC-induced activation of regenerative processes in the lung tissues. Spleens of the animals that received APC for therapeutic and preventive purposes were less engorged and had fewer hemorrhages. The decrease of body weight of the test animals that received APC for treatment and prevention was insignificant (p < 0.05), which indicates a less severe course of COVID-19. Administered following a purely therapeutic protocol, APC proved ineffective against SARS-CoV-2 post-infection. Thus, APC-based drug used as a therapeutic and preventive agent reduces pulmonary edema and makes morphological signs of lung tissue damage less pronounced in male Syrian hamsters infected with SARS-CoV-2.

The aim of this randomised, double blind controlled trial was to verify the efficacy of a herbal dentifrice on the reduction of plaque and gingivitis. Forty eight volunteers with established gingivitis were randomly assigned to either a test group (herbal dentifrice) or positive control group (dentifrice with triclosan and fluoride). The dentifrices were distributed in plain white tubes by an independent pharmacy, which revealed the contents of each tube only after the experimental period. Plaque and gingivitis assessments were carried out on baseline and after 28 days of product use. All examinations were conducted by the same calibrated investigator. Subjects were instructed to brush their teeth three times daily using their assigned dentifrice for 28 days. There was a significant reduction in plaque levels in both the test and control groups. However, there was no significant difference between the groups. A significant reduction in gingivitis was observed in both groups, although there was no significant difference between them. No adverse reactions were reported. The authors concluded that both dentifrices were effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis in subjects with established gingivitis.

  Objective: The effect of Zingiber ottensii Val. rhizome and Sauropus androgynus L. Merr leaves extract combination was investigated using histologic profile of adipose tissues in obese male rats induced by high-fat and carbohydrate diets.Methods: This was a preventive study, conducted for 42 days by simultaneous administration of diets and extracts administration. The subjects were divided into 8 groups. All groups except negative control group were fed with high-fat and carbohydrate diets. Orlistat, metformin, and curcumin were used as contrast.Result: The phytochemical screening of Z. ottensii Val. rhizome extract showed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, and triterpenoids, meanwhile S. androgynus L. Merr leaves extract presented flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and triterpenoids. The results showed tissues histological differences in all test group compared with positive control. The most effective combination dose for bangle and katuk leaves extract in protecting adipose tissue was 100 mg/Kg:100 mg/Kg body weight.Conclusion: The combination of black bangle and katuk leaves extract showed a protective role, demonstrated by adipose tissues histologic profile.

Pulmonary contusions are injuries to the lung parenchyma that often result from blunt trauma to the chest wall. This injury will activate the inflammatory response which can produce the effects of oxidative stress so that eventually lung damage occurs. Several studies have identified the effects of Jati Belanda leaves extracts related to the inflammatory process and their effects as antioxidants. This research is an in vivo experimental study with a prepost-test with control group design approach that aims to determine the effectiveness of the extracts of Jati Belanda (Guazuma ulmifolia) in its protection against pulmonary alveolar cells by pretreatment pulmonary contusions. The subjects of this study were white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain which were divided into 5 groups namely positive control, negative control, Dutch teak leaf extract 125 mg / kgBB, 250 mg / kgBB and 500 mg / kgBW. Rats were induced by dropping a weight of 400 grams as high as 50 cm. The results of the study of Jati Belanda Leaf Extract (EDJB) all doses and positive control can significantly reduce levels of myeloperoxidase expression (p &lt;0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the extracts of Jati Belanda leaves (Guazuma ulmifolia) are all effective doses in reducing the expression of myeloperoxidase in pulmonary tissue of Wistar rats induced by pulmonary contusions.

In this study, performed on the basis of JSC "Plemzverosovkhoz Saltykovsky" on 150 standard minks which were selected according to the principle of analogs, the systemic and local effects of protein hydrolyzate in the composition of the basic diet were evaluated. A complex methodical approach was used, including clinical, hematological, morphological and zootechnical research methods. The digital material was subject o statistical processing. When analyzing the basic diet of minks, it was established that it is balanced in almost all nutritional substances. Nevertheless, based on a comparative study of the amino acid composition of the feed, a deficiency of the essential amino acid of threonine was detected. An evaluation of the dynamics of body weight in experimental animals showed an advantage in the growth of animals receiving hydrolyzate. By the end of the experiment, the animals of the experimental groups outstripped (by 10.1%) the control analogues for weight gain. The results of the analysis of biochemical parameters of blood serum testify to a statistically significant increase in the concentration of the total protein (by 48.6% in test group minks relative to the control group) with a simultaneous decrease (by 27%) of the albumin fraction. The level of ALT in the control group was lower (by 29%) than in the animals of the experimental groups, while increasing (by 35%) the level of AST. Morphometric parameters of the total skin thickness in experimental animals did not have significant differences. At the same time, their ratio in the general cover varies in the direction of diminishing the thickness of the epidermis and the depth of the hair follicles in animals treated with hydrolyzate. Planimetric indicators of skins raw materials in experienced animals increased by 5.5% compared to representatives of the control group. Based on the evaluation of systemic and local effects of protein hydrolyzate, the effectiveness of its use in cellular fur farming has been established.

Inflammatory diseases affecting the soft and hard tissues surrounding an implant represent a new challenge in contemporary implant dentistry. Among several methods proposed for the decontamination of titanium surfaces, the administration of topical 14% doxycycline gel seems to be a reliable option. In the present study, we evaluated the microbial effect of 14% doxycycline gel applied on titanium surfaces and exposed to human salivary microbes in anaerobic conditions. We also examined the composition of the exposed surfaces to assess the safe use of periodontal gel on titanium surfaces. Six anatase and six type 5 alloy titanium surfaces were used and divided into two groups: The test group and the positive control group. Both were cultured with human salivary samples in anaerobic conditions. On the test groups, 240 mg of periodontal gel was applied. The microbial assessment was performed with a colony-forming unit (CFU) count and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) to identify the species. The surface integrity was assessed using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The results demonstrated the microbial efficacy of the 14% doxycycline periodontal gel and its safe use on titanium surfaces. However, the SEM observations revealed the permanence of the gel on the titanium surfaces due to the physical composition of the gel. This permanence needs to be further investigated in vivo and a final polishing protocol on the titanium surface is recommended.

Background: Ayurvedic literature indicated use of Bryonia laciniosa (BL) for metabolic abnormalities. However only one study evaluated Bryonia laciniosa seed ethanolic extract in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats and was found to have anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects. The authors looked at the renal function test in addition and found that it prevents deterioration of renal function in rats. Hence it was interesting to find if Bryonia laciniosa had any protective action in streptozotocin induced diabetic nephropathy in rats.Methods: Streptozotocin induced diabetic nephropathy model in wistar rats was standardised in phase 1. In phase 2 animals were divided into 4 groups and diabetic nephropathy was induce with STZ. Vehicle Control group animals received CMC 0.5%, Positive control group received enalapril 5 mg/kg, Test group 1 received ethanolic extract of Bryonia laciniosa (EEBL) 250 mg/kg and Test group 2 received (EEBL) 500 mg/kg from 3rd day onwards till 6 weeks. Renal function, morphology and histopthological changes were evaluated.Results: There was a significant reduction (p <0.001) in the serum creatinine and BUN in both low and high dose EEBL groups. High dose of EEBL lowered raised MDA values significantly (p<0.001) and raised the GSH values (p<0.001). On histopathology, the high dose EEBL reversed nephropathic changes which were equivalent to enalapril.Conclusions: Bryonia lacinosa in high doses 500 mg/kg has potential to reverse diabetic nephropathic changes induced in wistar rats.

Lactobacillus plantarum (LAB) is a group of lactic acid bacteria that can produce exopolysaccharide (EPS). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of adding selenium chloride oxide (SeOCl2) to the increased immunomodulatory potential of EPS L. plantarum Y-1.2. The experiment was conducted in vivo using macrophage cells of peritoneal fluid of mice induced by Staphylococcus aureus. EPS was obtained by precipitation at 4 °C. Identification test using HPLC showed that crude EPS of L. plantarum Y-1.2 containing glucose monomers for value retention times 4.198 and 4.204, crude EPS approaches the retention time of glucose BP 4.234. Testing of immuno-modulatory divided into six treatment groups. Group 1-3 as the control group, a positive control (Stimuno), negative control (crude EPS 50 mg/kg BW in mice), normal control (distilled water). Group 4-6 as the test group was given crude EPS 50 mg/kg BW in mice and selenium oxide chloride doses of 0.13 µg; 0.26 µg; 0.52 µg. The test results showed a dosage of 0.52 µg selenium chloride oxide to crude EPS of 50 mg/kg BW in mice could increase the activity and phagocytic capacity amounted to 28.06% and 28.39%

Objective: To assess the efficacy of Oral Rehydration Salt-Liquid (ORS-L) in the maintenance of the viability of Periodontal ligament cells (PDL). Materials and Method: Twenty freshly extracted teeth were used for this study. They were then randomly divided into 3 groups: Positive control group - 5 teeth which were immediately subjected to collagenase assay, without immersing in ORS-L; Negative control group - 5 teeth with an extra oral dry time of 24 hours, followed by subjecting to collagense assay without immersing in ORS-L and Test group (ORS-L) - 10 teeth with an extra oral dry period of 30 minutes, followed by immersion in ORS-L for a period of 45 minutes and then subjected to collagenase assay. The mean number of viable PDL cells were counted on a hemocytometer under 20X magnification. Results: The mean number of viable PDL cells was highest in the positive control group. In comparison to the negative control group, the test group showed a higher number of viable PDL cells. Conclusion: The study found that ORS-L was an effective solution in maintaining the viability of PDL cells.

This survey evaluated mombin leaves (Spondias mombin L.) decoction efficiency as an antiseptic during post-surgery period on cats submitted to orchiectomy and ovariosalpingohisterectomy. For this purpose, 45 castrated mongrels cats were divided into three groups, the first group as a positive control using 0.5% chlorhexidine-alcohol solution, the second a negative control group using sterile distilled water and, finally, the test group using mombin leaves decocted with a concentration of 100 mg/mL. All animals, independent of age and sex, had visibly healed in most cases in a similar time. Animals treated with mombin leaves decoction presented a significant reduction of bacterial growth. In addition, the animals treated in the test group had better surgical wound healing. All isolated bacterial strains presented inhibition halo for chlorhexidine and for Spondias mombin L. Thus, the decoction of Spondias mombin L. leaves proved antiseptic efficacy in the surgical wounds of cats submitted to orchiectomy and ovariosalpingohisterectomy.

Abstract Aim The aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the antiplaque and antigingivitis effect of Copaifera sp (Cp). Methods and Materials Twenty-three subjects participated in a randomized controlled clinical trial using a 21-day, partial-mouth experimental model of gingivitis. A custom tooth shield was fabricated for each subject to prevent the brushing of the four experimental posterior teeth in the lower-left quadrant. The subjects were randomly assigned to either the control group (using a placebo gel) or the test group (using the test gel containing 10% Cp). Results The clinical results showed statistically significant differences for plaque (PLI), bleeding (BI), and gingival (GI) indexes at days 0 and 21 in both groups (p<0.05). However, on day 21 there was no statistically significant difference between groups for all indexes (p>0.05). Conclusions The test gel containing 10% Cp did not prevent plaque formation and development of gingivitis. Clinical Significance Several medicinal herbs are used empirically by persons in the treatment and prevention of oral conditions. Research in this area must be encouraged to determine which herbal agents would be a useful addition to the current range of chemotherapeutic periodontal treatment options.
