Eleiodoxa conferta water extracts at different maturity stages were shown to contain three types of organic acid which are oxalic, ascorbic and malic acids by HPLC analysis. The content of oxalic acid concentration was the highest at young stage (1.33 gml-1) followed by mature stage (1.26 gml-1) and ripe stage at 1.23 gml-1. Malic acid content decreased during ripening from 1.38 gml-1 to 1.07 gml-1. The concentration of ascorbic acid remained constants during the fruit ripening. When antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested against several bacteria it was observed that the activity decreased as the fruit ripen. Highest diameter of inhibition zone was recorded against Escherichia coli by the young fruit extract at 15.3 mm. MIC of 0.063 gml-1 exhibit by the young fruit extract was helpful in controlling the growth of Gram negative bacteria, E. coli. However, 0.063 gml-1 concentration of extract from mature fruit is shown to regulate the growth of Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococus aureus.

Mesh infection is a major complication of hernia surgery after polypropylene (PP) mesh implantation. Modifying the PP mesh with antibacterial drugs is an effective way to reduce the chance of infection, but the hydrophobic characteristic of PP fibers has obstructed the drug adhesion. Therefore, to prepare antimicrobial PP mesh with a stable drug coating layer and to slow the drug release property during the hernia repair process has a great practical meaning. In this work, PP meshes were coated by bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA), which can load and release levofloxacin. PP meshes were activated with cold oxygen plasma and then plasma activated PP fibers were coated with PDA. The PDA coated meshes were further soaked in levofloxacin. The levofloxacin loaded PP meshes demonstrate excellent antimicrobial properties for 6 days and the drug release has lasted for at least 24 h. Moreover, a control PP mesh sample without plasma treatment was also prepared, after coating with PDA and loading levofloxacin. The antimicrobial property was sustained only for two days. The maximum inhibition zone of PDA coated meshes with and without plasma treatment was 12.5 and 9 mm, respectively. On all accounts, the modification strategy can facilely lead to long-term property of infection prevention.

  Objective: The inhibitory properties of successive extracts from Dioscorea bulbifera (Dioscoreaceae) tubers have been evaluated for the presence of phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial efficacy against multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates was evaluated.Methods: The tuber of D. bulbifera was oven dried and extracted successively with n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, and water. The antimicrobial potential of successive extracts against MDR isolates was studied by agar well-diffusion method. Qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed.Results: Qualitative phytochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of steroids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, saponins, and reducing sugars in almost all the extracts tested. Anthraquinones, phlobatanins, and tannins were not reported in any extracts tested. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of various solvents and water extracts of D. bulbifera was further investigated against ten MDR bacteria and three fungi, respectively. Aqueous and chloroform extracts were found to be more potent being capable of exerting significant inhibitory activities against the majority of the isolates such as Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter sp., Salmonella paratyphi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida albicans. The highest inhibitory activity was observed for K. pneumoniae with wide inhibition zone diameters (17 ± 0.15 mm), followed by E. coli 1(13 ± 0.11) mm, and Acinetobacter sp. (11 ± 0.12).Conclusion: Based on the present study, the extracts of D. bulbifera tubers have shown excellent activity against MDR microbial cultures tested. Further study is recommended for clinical evaluation, of the efficacy of crude extract in herbal medicine that can serve as a base for the development of novel potent drugs and phytomedicines.

Analyses of the constituents of the crude extracts obtained from young and mature moss species namely: Archidium ohioense and Philonotis hastata were conducted with a view to investigating the effects of maturity stages on their bioactive constituents. The mosses collected from their natural population were air dried at ambient temperature in the laboratory, extracted with methanol and the crude extracts subjected to gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The results of the analyses showed the presence of 20 compounds in young A. ohioense with n-hexadecanoic acid [26.60%], bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [12.47%], bicyclo (3.1.1)heptane 2,6,6-trimethyl-[1r-(1.alpha.,2.beta.,5.alpha.)]- [11.59%] and phytol [9.69%] forming the prominent components while in the mature A. ohioense, 13 compounds were present, from which n-hexadecanoic acid [51.25%], hexadecanoic acid 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)-ethyl ester [9.90%] and n-propyl 9-octadecenoate [7.47%] formed the prominent components. In P. hastata, 20 compounds were identified in the young stage sample with n-hexadecanoic acid [22.46%], bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [20.95%] and phytol [18.14%] as the prominent components while 9 compounds were identified in the mature sample with n-hexadecanoic acid[51.84%], hexadecanoic acid 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)ethyl ester [18.12%] and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [9.11%] which formed the prominent components. The study indicated that, maturity stages at collection of the mosses affected their bioactive compositions, with the young stage mosses showing more bioactive compounds than the mature ones. A study was carried out to screen for phytochemical constituents and assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Senna alata and Senna tora leaf extracts. The leaves were first dried at room temperature and 50°C in an oven prior to solvent extraction using ethanol and methanol. The in-vitro qualitative assays showed that both S. alata and S. tora leaf extracts contained bioactive and secondary metabolites components such as tannins, steroids, saponin, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids and phenols. The antioxidant activity and capacity test were carried out by conducting free radical of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Ferric reduction antioxidant plasma (FRAP) assays. Both assays showed S. tora leaf extract has higher antioxidant capacity than S. alata leaf extract. The efficacy of these leaf extracts were tested against skin pathogens through agar well diffusion method. S. alata extract showed an inhibition zone (1.15 – 1.59 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa while S. tora extracts exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis (inhibition zone of 12 – 16.94 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (inhibition zone of 1 – 1.59 mm). Nonetheless, no inhibition zone was observed for S. aureus by both leaf extracts. The phytochemicals and antioxidant constituents as well as inhibitory potential on skin pathogens possessed by S. alata and S. tora leave highlighted their potential utilization in the development of natural drugs or cosmetics to treat skin related diseases or infections.

Microbe is a microscopic living organism which is closely linked to human life. One of pathogenic microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureu,. may cause diseases. Sulfure of several plants are bioactive as antimicrobial. The properties of sulfure in Allium cepa L leads to an assumption that it has antimicrobial properties. Therefore, this study involved the antimicrobial test. The determination steps of antimicrobial Allium cepa L extract consisted of the Allium cepa L extract preparation, microbial regeneration and antimicrobial test. The antibacterial determination were performed by paper disc method. Based on the research data, determination of antimicrobial Allium cepa L extract resulted in inhibition zone area showed that the extract owned antimicrobial property.
