Effect of health education on awareness and practices of breast self-examination among females attending a charitable hospital at North Karachi

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of health education as an intervention to promote BSE among intervention and non-intervention group presenting in a low resource setting at North Karachi Methodology: This Quasi-experimental study was conducted from January-August 2018 in a charitable hospital in Karachi after taking ethical approval by the Institutional Review Board of Jinnah Sindh Medical University and relevant approvals from the hospital authorities. This study recruited 172 eligible women by dividing them into intervention (n=86) and control (n=86) groups from a low resource setting in Karachi. Demographic variables were collected through pretested questionnaire by interview. Intervention group then received health education regarding carcinoma of breast, importance of BSE and monthly motivation to perform BSE through cell phone. The questionnaire was again filled after 6 months of intervention. Control group was also given health education sessions upon completion of study. Results: Results revealed that both groups were similar initially. After 6 months females in intervention group showed significant (p=<0.001) improvement in knowledge and performance of BSE from 44.2% to 88.4% but there was no change in control group. Being in intervention group (RR=2.714, 95% CI= 1.760 - 4.186, p=0.001) and education (RR=0.573, 95% CI= 0.361 - 0.910, p=0.018) showed positive association with BSE performance. Upon adjusting with age, marital status, family history and education, intervention group (RR=2.570, 95% CI= 1.654 - 3.992, p= 0.001) remained significant while education (RR=1.466, 95% CI =0.910 - 2.363, p=0.116) became insignificant. Abstract Background Dental caries among children is a significant public health problem world over with multiple factors playing a major role as risk factors in initiation and contnuation of the disease. Fluoride varnish application is an effective intervent in preventing dental caries. Objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of six monthly application of sodium fluoride varnish in prevention of dental caries in deciduous teeth, permanent incisors and molars in children between six and seven years in a low resource setting, Sri Lanka. Method This was a double-blind, randomized controlled trial (NCT02877888). The study population was school children aged six to seven years, living in a district of Sri Lanka. Recruited children were randomly assigned to either a treatment (n=161) or to control group (n=162) using block randomization. Children in the treatment group received fluoride varnish professionally applied every 6 months combined with counselling on maintenance of oral hygiene and diet for a period of 2 years. The control group was only subjected to counselling on maintenance of oral hygiene and diet. Caries examinations were conducted using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). The primary outcome studied was the number of new caries in the two study groups. Results At the baseline assessment, the propotion of students with dental caries was higher in the intervention groupl (80.9%) compared to the control group (48.4%). Similarly the mean number of teeth with dental caries in a student was higher in the intervention group (1.35). At each time interval, the mean number of new dental caries was significantly lower in the intervention group. When independent effect of the intervention on development of new dental caries was assessed, application of fluoride varnish every 6 months for a period of 2 years was significantly associated with less number of new dental caries compared to controls. Conclusion Implementation of fluoride varnish application in a low resource setting is an effective method of preventing dental caries among children. A national level programme would contribute to the reduction of prevalence of dental caries in this age group. Trial registration: NCT02877888

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ANNISA development on nurses' knowledge of nursing documentation. This method uses quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design and a time series approach non-equivocal control group design. The study results were there were differences in the measurement of nurses' knowledge about nursing documentation in the intervention group before the intervention by measuring posttest-1 with p-value = 0.000. There were differences in nurses' experience about nursing documentation between the intervention group and the control group in the posttest-1 and posttest-2 measurements after the intervention using ANNISA with p-value = 0,000. There was an increase in differences in nurses' knowledge about nursing documentation from the pretest, posttest-1, and posttest-2 measurements after using ANNISA in the intervention group and the control group with p-value = 0.000. Objective. This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of reinforcement of oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) in mobile phones.Material and Methods. 400 subjects from two colleges (200 from each college) belonging to 18–20 years age group possessing mobile phones were randomly selected and baseline examination of oral hygiene and gingival status was carried out using Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) and Gingival Index (GI). Oral health education was provided to all the subjects. Oral health education message was reinforced through short messaging service (SMS) in mobile phones for the subjects belonging to the intervention group. There was no such reinforcement for the control group. Follow-up examinations were done at the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th month. After the 3rd month, subjects of the intervention group did not receive oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) and were followed up after next three months. Compiled data was analyzed using SPSS version 16 statistical software.Result. Mean OHI and GI scores in intervention group were significantly (p<0.01) less than those of control group after the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th month.Conclusion. Reinforcement of oral health education message through short messaging service (SMS) is effective media to improve oral health.

ABSTRAKBalita pneumonia mengalami batuk, napas cepat, dan ronkhi. Madu memiliki efek antimikroba dan antibodi yang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan agen mikroba penyebab pneumonia. Tujuan penelitian: mengetahui pengaruh pemberian madu terhadap frekuensi batuk, frekuensi napas, dan ronkhi balita pneumonia. Metode: Desain penelitian quasi-experimental: pre-test-post-test, non-equivalent control group. Jumlah sampel 34 balita berdasarkan rumus besar sampel kategorik berpasangan. Kelompok intervensi sejumlah 17 orang, diberikan madu murni 2,5 cc 30 menit sebelum anak tidur malam (± pukul 18.00) selama 3 hari. Kelompok kontrol sejumlah 17 orang diberikan air putih 2,5 cc 30 menit sebelum anak tidur malam (± pukul 18.00) selama 3 hari. Pengukuran hasil penelitian dilakukan pada hari pertama sebelum perlakuan dan hari keempat setelah perlakuan. Instrumen yang digunakan ialah timer, stetoskop, lembar observasi, dan kuesioner. Analisis data bivariat berpasangan menggunakan marginal homogenity, pair t test, dan Mc Nemar. Analisis data bivariat tidak berpasangan menggunakan Kolmogorov Smirnov, Fisher exact, dan independent t test. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menemukan adanya pengaruh yang bermakna pada pemberian madu terhadap frekuensi batuk (p=0,001), frekuensi napas (p=0,0001), dan ronkhi (p=0,012) antara kelompok kontrol dan kelompok intervensi. Honey has antimicrobial and antibody effects which can inhibit the growth of pneumonia-causing microbial agents. Objective: To identify the effect of honey on frequency of cough, respiration, and rhonchi in under-five children with pneumonia. Methods: This study employed quasi- experimental research with pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group. The number of samples of 34 under-five children based on the formula of categorical paired samples. The intervention group numbering 17 people was given 2.5 cc ofpure honey 30 minutes before the child slept at night (± 06:00pm) for 3 days. The control group numbering 17people was given 2.5 cc ofwater 30 minutes before the child slept at night (± 06:00pm) for 3 days. The study results were measured on the first day before treatment and the fourth day after treatment. The instruments used were timer, stethoscope, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Paired bivariate data were analyzed using marginal homogeneity, pair t test, and Mc Nemar. Unpaired bivariate data were analyzed of using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Fisher’s exact, and independent t-test. Results: The study results found a significant effect of giving honey on frequency of cough (p=0.001), frequency of respiration (p=0.0001), and rhonchi (p=0.012) between the control group and the intervention group. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured intervention on the frequency of self-care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula (AVF) by patients on hemodialysis. This is a quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-measurements. Participants were assigned to an intervention group (IG) ( n = 48) or to a control group (CG) ( n = 41). IG patients were subject to a structured intervention on self-care with AVF (SISC-AVF) consisting of both a theoretical and a practical part. After SISC-AVF application, patients in the IG showed better overall self-care behaviors with AVF than patients in the CG (79.2% and 91.4%, respectively, p < .001) as well as better self-care concerning both the management of signs and symptoms (90.1% and 94.4% respectively, p = .004) and the prevention of complications (72.7% and 89.5%, respectively, p < .001). The study results suggest that the SISC-AVF had positive effects on patients in the IG.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a highly prevalent disease, the progression of which depends on high blood glucose levels, which are reflected in the level of glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Appropriate health education equips patients with the knowledge and skills to control their glucose and HbA1c levels to avoid long-term complications. This study was set up to compare the results of an intensive (360 min) educational intervention to improve HbA1c parameters in patients with DM2 with those of a usual 90 min intervention. For this purpose, healthcare personnel led a quasi-experimental study of 249 diabetics: 171 in the control group, and 78 in the intervention group. In the control group, the mean HbA1c value decreased from 6.97 to 6.75, while in intervention group it fell from 8.97 to 8.06. The before and after mean difference between both groups was compared with a Wilcoxon test, and the results statistically significant (W = 4530; p < 0.001), indicating a higher reduction of HbA1c in the intervention group. We concluded that the intensive health education provided by nurses during the consultation helped improve HBA1c levels in persons with DM2.

Abstract Background: Almost one-third of children under five suffer from stunting in Indonesia. Stunting can be prevented optimally since the period of pregnancy as the initial phase of the first 1000 days of life. This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition education and reproductive health on pregnant women in Bogor Regency, Indonesia.Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 194 pregnant women from August to November 2019. The pregnant women were randomly selected from two different villages that were the stunting locus in Bogor Regency. The intervention group (n=97) received two hours of nutrition and reproductive health education in small groups (4-5 mothers per group) every two weeks for three consecutive months. This interactive education had been given by a facilitator using some techniques such as role-playing, lectures, simulation, and games. The control group (n=97) were to obtain regular health care services. A structured questionnaire was applied to collect data consisting of maternal characteristics, nutritional and reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the intervention and control groups. Data were analyzed using t-test and chi-square analysis.Results: Pregnant women in the intervention group indicate a significant increase in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding nutrition and health reproductive after being given an education. The pretest and posttest mean scores in the intervention group were 55.1 and 83.1; 40.2 and 49.0; and 36.2 and 40.2, for the overall mother's knowledge, attitudes, and practices, respectively. Whereas in the control group, there was no significance between the pretest and posttest mean for these three variables. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the posttest mean between the intervention group and the control group, but the difference was not significant (p>0.05) at the pretest.Conclusion: Providing nutrition and reproductive health education through small groups with interactive methods improves the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women. This intervention has the potential to be replicated and developed into large-scale implementation by optimizing collaboration between government, non-governmental organizations, and maternal and child health service providers.

Background: Almost seven percent of disease burden is due to genetic disorders and birth defects and they are associated to genetic as well as environmental factors. Prevention of such problems by making aware and increasing knowledge level with the help of health education during adolescence is cost-effective among others. In this context, current study proposed whether mini-lecture and/or poster is/are effective in changing adolescents’ knowledge regarding genetic disorders and birth defects.Methods: Mini-lectures followed by posters on genetic disorders and birth defects were used for intervention group, whereas for control, only mini-lectures based on health promotion were delivered by trained personnel in nine through 12 grade students of conveniently selected two public schools of Kaski district using quasi-experimental design. Knowledge was assessed using a pretested inventory at baseline, after two weeks of mini-lectures and two more weeks after poster for intervention group, whereas, only at baseline and two weeks after mini-lectures for control. Statistical analysis was carried out to compare the intervention group of 133 students with that of control group of 154. Results: Mean knowledge increments among control and intervention groups were 0.20 and 0.68 points respectively after mini-lecture. An addition of 0.84 points gained after the poster, yielding overall increment of 1.52 in intervention group. Inferential analysis showed that effect of control was not effective (p=0.60), whereas mini-lecture (p=0.032), poster (p=0.008) and both mini-lecture and poster (p<0.001) were effective.Conclusions: The mini-lecture and/or poster for grade nine through 12 are effective methods and media for bringing about changes in knowledge of adolescents regarding genetic disorders and birth defects. An understanding of reproductive health in the elderly, especially women, becomes so important because there are so many changes that occur when women enter old age. Decreasing reproductive health in women occurs when women enter menopause. For this reason, it is necessary to provide appropriate information to the elderly regarding the health of their reproductive system, to avoid health problems that threaten the overall condition of the body. This study aims to determine the effect of reproductive health education in the elderly. The research method used was quasi-experimental with non-randomized pretest-posttest group control design. The number of samples in this study was 62 people consisting of 32 people in the intervention group and 30 people in the control group. Data analysis in this study with paired t-test and independent. The results showed that there was a significant difference in knowledge of the elderly between the intervention group and the control group after the intervention (p-value = 0,000), so there were significant differences in the attitudes of Keywords: reproductive health education, elderly, knowledge, attitudes the elderly between the intervention and control groups, after the intervention (p = 0.008).
