Ethics are important for personal, organizational and societal development. Although the literature has isolated some remedies and causes of unethical attitudes and behaviours, there is a still a need for further research. When focusing on the public context, it has been suggested that the motivation to serve the public interest has a negative relationship with different unethical outcomes. Thus, one interesting avenue of research is to explain how public service motivation can be enhanced by the outcome of certain managerial practices, which may also lead to ethical benefits indirectly. Using data collected from social workers in Catalonia (Spain), this article confirms that goal clarity directly increases the levels of public service motivation and indirectly reduces the acceptance of unethical behaviours by eliciting public service motivation. Research and practical implications of the findings are discussed. Points for practitioners This study highlights the importance of public service-oriented institutional contexts in indirectly shaping unethical outcomes. The findings recommend to public managers and practitioners to provide goal clarity (through certain human-resource management practices such as appraisal or job design) because it increases public service motivation and indirectly reduces the acceptance of unethical behaviour.

Governments across the EU are increasingly turning their attention to advanced big data analytics, aiming to use their data to inform the design and implementation of public policies. Due to limitations in expertise and resources, this is often impossible without the formation of data sharing partnerships with private actors. Yet, the prevailing view in EU data protection regulatory guidance is that the ‘public interest’ and private interests as lawful grounds for data processing under article 6 GDPR find themselves in a zero-sum relationship. The ‘public interest’ under article 6(1)(e) GDPR is construed as the exclusive realm of public authorities, which are often advised against relying on other grounds for processing, associated with private interests, such as ‘legitimate interests’ under article 6(1)(f) GDPR. This chapter argues against the presently dominant divide between public and private interests under lawful grounds for processing, sketching the emergence of Government-to-Business (G2B) research data sharing in the EU. A conceptualisation of the ‘public’ interest as not incompatible with private interests, as long as a contribution to societal well-being is made through data processing, is offered in that regard. The chapter elaborates on this conceptualisation and the requirements for ensuring protection of the fundamental rights of data subjects, while reflecting on the research questions that should concern future EU data protection law researchers with regard to its adoption.

The growth of sharia insurance in Indonesia continues to occur. This is a sign that the people in Indonesia have good risk management because the company's growth is supported by the increase in customers in sharia insurance companies. This condition must be supported again by the conditions in which the company has a good performance, so the company must find a way to continue to improve its performance. This study is aimed to determine the effect of leverage, firm size, and company age on the financial performance of sharia companies. The method used is through quantitative research using multiple regression. The method of data collection uses a purposive sampling technique carried out to all populations, namely all Islamic insurance companies in Indonesia from 2012 to 2018. The results of the study show that leverage and age of the company do not succeed in influencing financial performance, while firm size has a positive effect on financial performance. Therefore it is important for companies to continue to increase their assets, especially in collecting funds from the public as the company's ingredients in managing their finances to improve their financial performance.
Keywords: Age, Financial Performance, Leverage, Size

In Islamic insurance, if at the end of the period there is a surplus from the substraction result between total insurance income in the tabarru’ fund and insurance expenses, the surplus will be called as underwriting surplus. A good Islamic insurance company can be seen when the company succeeds in obtaining an underwriting surplus, because it is a proof when the company has managed the participant funds well. The underwriting surplus can be used as a reserve fund when an underwriting deficit occurs or when insurance expenses exceed insurance income, thereby it can improve the public interest in Islamic insurance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the development of the underwriting surplus in Islamic life insurance in Indonesia and the factors that influence it by using panel data regression method. The estimation results using the REM model show that the variables of total assets and GDP have a positive and significant effect. Meanwhile, the contribution allowance, claim allowance, and inflation variables have a negative and significant effect.
