Lessons Learned from Implementation and Evaluation of an Evidence-Based Sex Education Pilot Program for Minority Adolescent Females

The purpose of the pilot program was to increase knowledge, beliefs, and intentions related toabstinence and safer sex practices in a small cohort of minority adolescent girls. Researchers implementedand evaluated the Be Proud! Be Responsible! curriculum with a small group of seven minority girls ages13 to 18 who were sexually inexperienced during a four-week summer program at a Boys and Girls Club.Lessons learned from our program include that educators should first take steps to establish rapport priorto program implementation, secondly, there should be an increased number of program sessions than pres-ently in the curriculum and thirdly, grouping participants into cohorts of smaller age range may be moreconducive to the educational process.

AbstractThere is a pressing need to equip youth-serving community organizations to respond to the unique needs of trauma-exposed children. Early prevention measures can be an effective means of redirecting children to self-regulatory healing, while facilitating their transition toward strength-based thriving. Sport can offer a powerful opportunity to reach these children; however there remains little information on how to effectively develop, deliver, evaluate, and sustain trauma-sensitive sport programs in a community context. The purpose of this paper is to outline a case study of integrating sport-based trauma-sensitive practices with BGC Canada’s national Bounce Back League program. An interdisciplinary partnership of academic, community, and practice experts used a community-based participatory action research approach, paired with a knowledge translational approach, to guide the process of program development. Mixed methods (e.g., surveys, logbooks, interviews, focus groups, online communications) were used to generate ongoing insights of staff’s training experiences, successes and challenges of program implementation, and potential impact of program on club members. Several stages of program development are described, including: (a) collaboratively planning the program; (b) piloting the program to three clubs; (c) adapting the program using pilot insights; (d) expanding the adapted program to ten clubs; and (e) creating opportunities to maintain, sustain, and scale-out practices throughout grant duration and beyond. Lessons learned regarding the leadership team’s experiences in terms of developing, adapting, and integrating trauma-sensitive practices in this community context are shared.

These days, one of the global challenges is the growing demand for food. To be more specific, seafood bases play a key role in filling the nutritional requirements of human beings. In Africa (Ethiopia) the public expenses to improve productive capacity in aquatic food are increasing. Additionally, the expenses in dams and in fishers’ capacity building have increased households’ engagement in the fishery sector in Ethiopia. Cooperatives’ productive capacity has been strengthened by the government and other non-government organizations with the supply of fishing boats, refrigerators, fish nets and other office supplies. However, the effect of such public expenses in bringing changes in the households’ livelihood and welfare has never been assessed in this study area. This paper aims to investigate what motivates the households to fish and assess the effect of fisheries on the households’ livelihood and welfare. A structured survey consisting of 313 rural households was administered using trained enumerators in two kebeles located close to the Tekeze dam, Northern Ethiopia. The result indicates that socioeconomic characteristics, such as age (young), sex, education, and active family size were driving the households to fishing. Access to market and access to support are driving farmers to fisheries. There is a significant difference in fishing households’ income which is higher than non-fishing households. The results also indicate that there are lesser income inequalities among fishery households operating in cooperatives compared to private fishery households.

Introduction. Free flap surgery is a routine procedure in many developed countries with good surgical outcomes. In many developing countries, however, these services are not available. In this paper, we audit free flaps done in a resource constrained hospital in Kenya. Objective. This is a five-year audit of free flaps done in a tertiary hospital in Kenya, between 2009 and 2014. Materials and Methods. This was a prospective study of patients operated on with free flaps between 2009 and 2014. Results. A total of one hundred and thirty-two free flaps in one hundred and twenty patients were performed during the five-year duration. The age range was eight to seventy-two years with a mean of 47.2. All the flaps were done under loupe magnification. The overall flap success rate was eighty-nine percent. Conclusion. Despite the many limitations, free flaps in our setup were successful in the majority of patients operated on. Flap salvage was noted to be low due to infrequent flap monitoring as well as unavailability of theatre space. One therefore has to be meticulous during surgery to reduce any possibilities of reexploration.

Актуальность статьи обусловлена необходимостью усиления развивающих возможностей и творческой направленности деятельности в системе дополнительного образования детей. Цель статьи заключается в апробации идей, относящихся к обоснованию и реализации психолого-педагогических условий, способствующих приобщению обучающихся к продуктивно-созидательной деятельности и развитию их художественной продуктивно-созидательной компетенции в образовательном процессе детской школы искусств. Авторами приведена характеристика уровня компонентов исследуемой компетенции, обоснована программа ее развития. Для доказательства эффективности реализации программы и созданных условий сравнивались изменения исследуемой компетенции. В экспериментальной группе доказана значимость сдвига количественных данных уровня компонентов исследуемой компетенции с помощью критерия знаков G по всем оцениваемым параметрам: Gэмп. < Gкр. при p < 0,01. В контрольной группе значимых изменений не обнаружено. В статье обобщены общие и дифференцированные психолого-педагогические условия приобщения обучающихся экспериментальной группы к продуктивно-созидательной деятельности, подходы к созданию которых могут быть использованы в прикладных исследованиях и в образовательном процессе учреждений дополнительного образования детей. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to strengthen the developing capabilities and creative orientation of activity in the system of additional education of children. The purpose of the article is to test the ideas related to the justification and implementation of psycho-pedagogical conditions that contribute to involving students in productive and creative activity and developing their artistic productive and creative competence in the educational process of children’s art school. The authors characterize the level of components of the competence and substantiate the program of its development. To prove the effectiveness of the program implementation and the created conditions, changes in the competence of students were compared. In the experimental group, the significance of the shift in the quantitative data of the level of the competence components was proved using the criterion of signs G for all the estimated parameters: Gemf. < Gcr.at p < 0,01. No significant changes were found in the control group. The article summarizes the general and differentiated psycho-pedagogical conditions for involving students of the experimental group in productive and creative activity, approaches to the creation of which can be used in applied research and in the educational process.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a long-standing commitment to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening for vulnerable populations. In 2005, the CDC began a demonstration in five states and, with lessons learned, launched a national program, the Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP), in 2009. The CRCCP continues today and its current emphasis is the implementation of evidence-based interventions to promote CRC screening. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of four CRCCP awardees and their federally qualified health center partners as an introduction to the accompanying series of research briefs where we present individual findings on impacts of evidence-based interventions on CRC screening uptake for each awardee. We also include in this article the conceptual framework used to guide our research. Our findings contribute to the evidence base and guide future program implementation to improve sustainability, increase CRC screening, and address disparities in screening uptake.

AbstractMarfan syndrome, bicuspid aortic valve, and/or coarctation of the aorta are associated with medial abnormalities of the ascending aortic or para-coarctation aorta. Medial abnormalities in the ascending aorta are prevalent in other type of patients with a variety of CHDs such as single ventricle, persistent truncus arteriosus, transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and tetralogy of Fallot, encompassing a wide age range and may predispose to dilatation, aneurysm, and rapture necessitating aortic valve and root surgery. These CHDs exhibit ongoing dilatation of the aortic root and reduced aortic elasticity and increased aortic stiffness that may relate to intrinsic properties of the aortic root. These aortic dilatation and increased stiffness can induce aortic aneurysm, rapture of the aorta, and aortic regurgitation, but also provoke left ventricular hypertrophy, reduced coronary artery flow, and left ventricular failure. Therefore, a new clinical entity can be used to call this association of aortic pathophysiological abnormality, aortic dilation, and aorto-left ventricular interaction – “aortopathy”.

The terms sex education, sexuality education, and sexual health education—mentioned throughout this article—all reflect the diverse scholarship that considers how sex and sexuality are taught and learned in different contexts across the lifespan. While people learn about sex and sexuality throughout their lives, most discussion of sexuality education focuses on the lessons learned by children, adolescents, and youth. And, though young people learn about sex and sexuality from various sources, US debates about sexuality education focus on school-based learning. This article considers the social construction of childhood and debates around school-based sex education as well as scholarship that examines other sites of sex and sexuality education. Families, religious and secular communities, media, and the Internet all play significant roles in dispersing information and values surrounding sex and sexuality. These and other sites of sexuality education reflect and contribute to societal and cultural ideologies around sex and sexuality. Research on sexuality education has also considered the ways sex education has the potential to reproduce, as well as contest, societal inequalities. This article focuses on sexuality education in the United States, and while the majority of the scholarship reflects this focus, included are some texts written within other national contexts that have influenced scholarship or thinking about sexuality education research and practice within the United States. While this article does not contain a section explicitly engaging with citizenship, the ways sexuality education has been involved in constructing and policing US national identity comes up in several sections.
