Research findings and clinical observations suggest that families with an alcoholic parent are more unpredictable. Alcoholic parents ( n = 25, 68% men, 68% Euro-American, M age = 38.6 yr.) and community parents ( n = 27, 52% men, 70% Euro-American, M age = 38.8 yr.) completed the self-report Family Unpredictability Scale of Ross and Hill. Alcoholic parents reported significantly higher (less predictability) scores on the subscales of Nurturance, Finances, and Discipline, as well as on the Total Family Unpredictability Scale ( ps < .01). This appears to be the first study on family unpredictability and parental alcoholism in which parental reports of multiple dimensions of unpredictability are used. We provide suggestions for research and clinical uses of the scale, especially pertaining to families with an alcoholic parent.

Whether or not one uses humor to cope with a setback may depend on the idiosyncratic relation of the setback to feeling of self-worth. All people pursue the higher order goal of self-validation, but people differ in what domains of life their self-worth is contingent upon and to what extent. In this article based on an incongruity theory of humor we argue that the use of humor in coping with a highly self-worth-contingent setback may be impeded by two cognitive-motivational processes: goal-driven activation and goal shielding. From the outlined theory we derived the hypothesis that the more a domain is contingent upon self-worth, the less likely a person will be to use humor to deal with a setback in that domain. We tested this hypothesis in two studies employing two forms of self-report, i.e., ratings of reaction likelihood to setbacks described at an abstract domain level (Study 1), and ranking of reaction likelihood to concrete setbacks from different domains (Study 2). The hypothesis was affirmed in different domains of self-worth contingency controlling for the influence of habitual coping with humor, coping by disengagement, and global self-esteem.

The issue of self-assessment is primarily discussed in the context of human behaviour, learning, and self-esteem. It seems important to include self-assessment in building individual competences and coping with stress. Nowadays we have more and more resources, but we also experience a greater number of stressful stimuli, which is a consequence of, among others occupational burnout. Is the self-assessment associated with the perceived stress? Is the self-assessment related to the style of coping with stress? The purpose of this article is to determine the intensity of the relationship between self-assessment and stress, and styles of coping with stress. The study was conducted in a group of 210 students specialising in social work, employed in social assistance institutions or intending to take up a job as a social worker.

Aim and problem. The article is devoted to the problem of the correlation between the resilience and the innovative personal potential on the example of a student sample. The authors describe resilience as a dynamic system of individual psychological qualities, life meanings and personal relations, which determine the specifics of its response to changing conditions. Methodology. An empirical study was carried out on a sample of students of the Novosibirsk State Technical University (N = 164) using the psychological tests of a resilience by M. Ungar and A. V. Makhnach, test of an innovative personal potential by Yu. A. Vlasenko, V. K. Kalin, test of a self-esteem of an innovative traits by N. M. Lebedeva, A. N. Tatarko. Results of research. Correlation analysis using Spearman’s Rs criterion showed the correlation between the integral indicator of an innovative personal potential with the general level of a resilience, relational resilience (test ARM), self-efficacy, coping and adaptation (A. V. Makhnach’s test), as well as the presence of many correlations between a resilience and innovative qualities. As a result of the regression analysis, it was found that the innovative personal potential of university students depends on the general level of a resilience and coping and adaptation skills, and the self-perception of innovativeness depends on the general level of a resilience. In a conclusion authors confirm the correlation between the resilience and the innovative personal potential of students.

This article begins by explaining the devastating effects of child sexual abuse on the self-esteem of its victims. Intervention strategies are discussed with a focus on a self-esteem model — the SEAs Program — developed by psychologist James Messina. This program uses trained psychotherapists and group members to expand each survivor's support system. Cognitive and experiential techniques are implemented in a humanistic framework to help clients recover from low self-esteem. Preliminary results from an outcome study utilizing three measures of self esteem and coping strategies (the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, the Need for Harmony Scale and Spielberger's Anger Expression Scale) suggest that this model shows promise in helping women who are survivors of child sexual abuse to build healthy self-esteem and warrants further investigation.
