Problematising Adults-Students pro-environmental Behaviour in Nginda Ward of Embu North Sub-County, Kenya

This research examined pro-environmental behaviour between adults and youths in Nginda ward, Embu north sub County. The research relied on two theories, theory of planned action and theory of pro-social behaviour. The research followed a descriptive design. Data were collected using questionnaires with closed and open-ended questions. The researcher administered questionnaires in person, and filled the entire questionnaire according to the participant’s responses. In total 245 participants comprising, 124 adults (comprising men and women), 121 form three students drawn from Muvandory, Rugumu and St. Alphose day Secondary Schools, and 58 standard seven pupils from Rugumu, Muvandory and ST. Francis primary schools were involved in the study. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise data and compare responses between groups. Differences in pro-environmental behaviour between adults and school children were examined to determine if the differences were statistically significant. A total of fourteen environmental problems were mentioned by participants to be prevalent in Nginda ward. The top three environmental problems mostly mentioned by participants included deforestation, water pollution and air pollution. The findings of this research can guide interventions by government and donor agencies seeking to mobilise and engage participation by both students and adults to combat environmental problems in Nginda ward. Future studies are needed to find out whether the scale will produce similar result in other group in this community which include business community, factory workers and eatery owners

Differences in environmental attitudes between females and male participants were examined to determine if the differences were statistically significant. A total of fourteen environmental problems were mentioned by participants to be prevalent in Nginda ward. The top three environmental problems mostly mentioned by participants included deforestation, water pollution and air pollution. Results showed that differences in environmental attitudes between females and males were not statistically significant. However, more females than males perceived various environmental problems to be more serious. Differences between female and male perceptions in relation to the seriousness of various environmental problems were statistically significant, F (1,239) = 8.07, p< 0.001. The findings of this research can guide interventions by government and donor agencies seeking to mobilise and engage participation by both males and females to combat environmental problems in Nginda ward. Future studies are needed to find out whether the scale will produce a similar result in other groups in this community which include the business community, factory workers and eatery owners.

Value added tax (VAT) is indirect sources of revenue collection of nation. It has been the most essential choice like our developing countries, Nepal. Which leads to revenue enhancement and sustainable economic development. As VAT was an emerging concept in Nepal, a comprehensive taxpayer education program was launched to impart knowledge regarding the various aspects of VAT to parliamentarians, industrialists, businessmen, consumers as well related society. The study used descriptive and survey research design. Data were collected through questionnaires. Statistical tools were used to make a proper analysis. It is found that 20% businessmen and 33.33% consumers are not aware that the Government of Nepal  is levying VAT on all kind of products, 36% consumers are not aware of the fact that you pay VAT whenever you purchase any product, 88 % of the total respondents knowledge on earning from VAT is a major source of revenue for  Government, only 44 % response  of respondents  are  in favor of billing system, 33.33% consumer are not aware about existing rate of VAT in Nepal, 44% consumers specify the other problem in the present VAT implementation  except VAT collection ,VAT refund and registration.  Most of them ask for tax invoice to get the authenticity of sellers. VAT must be successful and this largely depends upon the public awareness, honesty, faith and morality of tax officials and the business community. There is a need for willpower and action. It is also found that public awareness program and tax education play prime role to increase the VAT revenue in Nepal. The finding of this study is majority of Tax expert and businessmen are aware about VAT system but the training and awareness program is essential.

From 2017, the government of Kenya aimed at attaining 100 percent transition rate of pupils from primary to secondary schools. In Laikipia West Sub-County whose primary schools are focused by the study, transition from primary to secondary schools averaged at 54.9% from 2008 to 2015. Cultural factors are highlighted in literature as to undermine transition of pupils from primary to secondary schools. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which cultural factors influence pupils’ transition from primary to secondary schools in Laikipia West Sub-county in Kenya. Using ex-post facto research design, data was collected using self-delivered questionnaire from a target population of 1064 respondents. The study was carried out on a randomly sampled population of 411 respondents, composed of 280 teachers and 131 PTA chairpersons in public primary schools in the area of study. Data was analyzed using simple regression at .05 alpha level. Findings from the study revealed that cultural factors were significantly influencing transition of pupils from primary to secondary schools (β= - .790) at 0.5 significance level. The study recommended that local leaders should organize for civic education in order to address the identified transition challenges so as to attain a 100% rate of progression to secondary schools.

Kenya&rsquo;s education has faced by many challenges especially in literacy and numeracy skills since the introduction of free primary education. This was contributed by swelling of enrollment in classrooms hence low performance of literacy and numeracy skills. The purpose of this article is to establish the extent to which stakeholder engagement influence performance of literacy and numeracy educational programme in public primary schools in Nairobi County, Kenya. Despite various efforts by key educational stakeholders to improve learner&rsquo;s performance, minimal achievement have been experienced on learner&rsquo;s skills. This study adapted descriptive research survey design and correlational research design. Data collected from the respondents by use of questionnaires and interview schedules from a target population of 2053 and a sample size of 335. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 and results presented in tables and figures. Arithmetic mean and standard deviation generated from the descriptive data and Pearson moment correlation coefficient (r) were computed. The coefficient of determination R2 is 0.480 this is an indicator that R2 was the coefficient of determination of this model and it depicted that stakeholder engagement explained 48%. The remaining 52% was explained by other factors. The overall F statistics 257.949 with p- 0.000b&lt;0.05 implying a statistical significant relationship between stakeholder engagement and performance of literacy and numeracy educational programme. Interpretations were done and recommendations were policy makers should embrace the methodology of engaging all the stakeholders in programme. This was an indication of strong positive relationship between Stakeholder engagement and performance of literacy and numeracy educational programme. The results showed that stakeholder engagement for monitoring and evaluation strongly influenced the performance of literacy and numeracy educational programme as shown by a correlation coefficient, which was statically significant. Learners should explore more things on their own in order to make predictive answers. Recommendations for further research on participatory monitoring and evaluation practices, which was lacking and specifically involvement of all the stakeholders in the intervention programme in basic education.

Purpose Going further on a broad understanding of nonwork besides family, this study aims to analyze differences between women and men considering work-nonwork conflict (WNWC) in the Brazilian context, investigating time spent in eight nonwork dimensions and the dimensions more affected. Design/methodology/approach The study was quantitative and descriptive. A survey was conducted, based on a validated WNWC scale. The sample consisted of 338 professionals working in Brazil. Data analysis was conducted through descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. Findings Compared to men, women declare higher levels of WNWC considering the eight nonwork dimensions, present greater differences in stress-based conflicts and in more collective dimensions and have marriage or no children associated with more WNWC. Research limitations/implications The study highlights the need to include more nonwork aspects into career and management studies to influence organizational practices and individual choices. The main limitation is the non-probabilistic sample (results not generalizable). Practical implications Know more about WNWC will help organizations to improve lives by creating practices and a cultural environment to preserve women’s and men’s nonwork times. It may also help people to choose places to work for, matching their nonwork needs. Social implications The study reinforces demands from new family arrangements, more couples in dual-career and an aging society: organizations must prepare to have workers that want or need to dedicate time to other interests besides family or children. Originality/value It goes further on a broad understanding of nonwork besides family to understand WNWC and how it may affect differently men and women.

<p>Online learning has been used in the literature to cover diverse learning contexts ranging from blended learning, distance learning, virtual learning and web-enhanced learning. Many aspects of online learning have become the focuses of research and teacher roles are one of them. The present study, therefore, intends to examine how 153 university students perceived the roles of their teachers in online learning of a blended English course by using a 27-item and 5-Likert-scale questionnaire (the STRI). Results of statistical analyses showed that the Cronbach’s Alpha value of the entire questionnaire was .955 and those of the three sub-roles were all above .891, indicating that both the questionnaire and the three factors of sub-roles were reliable and valid. Further analyses revealed that the three sub-roles of teachers, i.e., the cognitive role, the affective role and the managerial role, were significantly different from each other. Among them, the means of the managerial role was significantly higher than that of the cognitive role while the means of the affective role was the lowest. Results of descriptive statistics also revealed that keeping a record of students’ learning in the managerial role was quite notable for students. The findings suggest that the roles of teachers in online learning as a whole were reduced. However, the managerial role was more notable than the other two roles and the affective role was the least impactful in the online learning context in this study. The researcher believes that these findings may offer some insights to classroom implications and provide the basis for future studies of comparing teacher roles across different educational contexts.</p>

The study investigated the personal values of small business owners in South Africa. In addition, the study examined if male and female small business owners exhibit significant differences in their personal values. The study employed the descriptive research design. Data was collected through the use of self-administered questionnaire in a survey. The study used the Schwartz Portrait Value Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and the T-test were used for data analysis. The results indicated that self-direction, achievement, stimulation, power and security are the five most important personal values for small business owners. The results indicate that male small business owners give greater weight to self-direction, stimulation, achievement, hedonism and power. Female small business owners give greater weight to universalism, conformity, tradition, benevolence, and security

Depression affects over 17 million American adults yearly and has been identified as the leading cause of disability in people between the ages of 15 and 44 years. There is evidence that feeling neglect or a lack of parental attachment during childhood is associated with depression. One construct that has been overlooked is love from a parent. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between individuals who felt not wanted/loved during adolescence and lifetime depression and to examine this association by gender. We examined 5114 participants aged 24–32 years at Wave IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) public use dataset. We used logistic regression analysis to determine the association between an individual feeling not wanted/loved by their parent/caregiver prior to age 18, covariates, and lifetime depression. We then stratified by gender and ran logistic models for both men and women separately. Overall, 16.2% ( n = 827) reported lifetime depression diagnosis, while 16.5% of the participants reported feeling not wanted/loved “often,” while 29.8% reported it as “sometimes.” Feeling not wanted/loved “often” was associated with higher odds of depression (AOR = 3.00; 95% CI, 2.45–3.66; p < .001) versus “sometimes” (AOR = 1.59; 95% CI, 1.31–1.90; p < .001). When stratified by gender, feeling not loved/wanted was associated with depression among both men (AOR = 3.70; 95% CI, 2.60–5.25; p < .001) and women (AOR = 2.73; 95% CI, 2.13–3.48; p < .001). Feeling not loved or wanted by a parent/caregiver during adolescence has serious implications, for both men and women. Future studies should further examine this construct and identify family-based interventions that focus on parent/caregiver and child relationships.

Implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into our daily lives has created new occupations and businesses. It has changed human activities and affected individual's behaviour, influencing our decisions. This study explores the opinions of individuals about the influences of implementing AI into the labour market, especially the issue of how AI could affect human employment. There are 144 participants who responded to this survey, and the data was analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test to identify significant differences between men and women, as well as the Spearman correlation. The results provide interesting insights and only relevant statistics and significant results are presented.

Abstract Introduction Proper storage conditions and maintenance of viable biological material plays an important role in microbiological research, allowing for the opportunity to conduct future studies. Objective To evaluate the viability of Streptococcus mutans strains that were previously grown and stored under different temperatures for approximately eight years. Material and method In this study, we evaluated 393 bacterial isolates that were stored in a freezer at -80°C (G1) and 200 isolates stored in a freezer at -20°C (G2). Aliquots of each sample were plated on blood agar and mitis-salivarius bacitracin sucrose agar-solidified medium. After incubating under microaerophilic conditions in an incubator at 37°C for 72 hours, the presence, morphology and purity of bacterial growth was observed. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Result Microbial viability was observed in almost all samples (99.7%) in G1, whereas all isolates stored at -20°C were considered inviable. Conclusion The viability of S. mutans is influenced by the storage temperature of the samples, and the strains remain viable when stored under ideal temperature conditions (-80°C), even when stored for a long period of time.
