Biotechnology has helped to improve the quality of people’s lives over ten thousand years. Today’s biotechnologies vary in application and over the last century, the number and range of biotechnologies have rapidly increased. A key to this increase was the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, leading to numerous applications, particularly in forensics, medicine and agriculture. There are some strong religious and ethical views and observations regarding the advancement of this technology. Biotechnology involving practices such as organ transplants, manipulating human embryos and using animal in research may be particularly offensive to some groups of people, while the fundamental aim of this technology is to meet human needs or demands to improve the quality of life. Ethics and Xenotransplantation, Ethics and Zebrafish, Ethics and organ donation and Designer Babies have become today’s controversial issues. This article aims to explore these issues and analyze as per religious ethical values and standards.

Abstract A nationwide survey of community gardeners found differences in rankings of the importance of community gardens related to quality-of-life perceptions based on Maslow' hierarchy of human needs model. Race, gender, and city sizes affected perceptions. When comparisons were made among the four racial/ethnic divisions, responses to 18 of the 24 questions were found to be statistically different. Community gardens were especially important to African-American and Hispanic gardeners. Male and female gardeners rated quality-of-life benefits from gardens similarly in importance. However, women placed higher value on the importance of saving money and the beauty within the garden. Gardeners in small, medium, and large metropolitan cities had similar quality-of-life perceptions with only 4 of the 24 statement responses showing significant differences. Significant differences were found in 10 of the 24 statement responses between gardeners of the two large cities of Los Angeles and New York. In most cases, mean ratings were higher for gardeners in New York than those in Los Angeles.

Abstract Using a focus group approach, Midwest homeowners in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, with recent experience and exposure to landscape design services were interviewed to assess their perceptions of the quality of available design services. In general, participants were pleased with their design experience and the quality of service provided to them. Poor communication between participants and landscape designers or landscape architects was commonly voiced as a key service limitation. Lack of homeowner knowledge of the design process was also identified as a limitation to good design, but to a lesser extent. Additionally, participants identified a variety of correlations between their landscapes and the potential for enhanced quality-of-life (QOL). Although not typically perceived as a critical singular QOL enhancement factor such as availability of food or medical care, quality landscape design appears to cumulatively enhance QOL in a significant way due to the wide variety of human needs that well-designed outdoor spaces can address.

Abstract The industrial age has brought us much good: a higher quality of life which is reflected in better healthcare and education, a longer life expectancy etc. But besides the indisputable benefits, the industrial age has also caused many problems which are now assuming global proportions. In 1987 UN Commission on Environment and Development attempted to propose how to enable people and whole nations to develop while sustaining functioning ecosystems and healthy environment. The key term became “sustainable development”. But problem with sustainable development concept is that it is so vague and “all-embracing”. Its biggest deficiency is the fact that it fails to attempt to even define human needs. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 conference, June 2012) did not change current unsustainable development trends. Therefore we should allow for and ponder the possibility that effort at sustainable development will fail and the human community will experience great civilization turbulence. Maybe it is too late for sustainable development, what we need is a sustainable retreat. Our abilities are limited and promoting sustainable development may prove to be beyond us. In comparison with our ancestors we have much greater opportunities. But this has not been counterbalanced by greater responsibility and foresight. We should explore and study future opportunities and dangers that could occur under certain conditions. These images of possible futures may help to make our present decisions more qualified and responsible.

The article presents the experience of Murmansk Arctic State University in the implementation of a unique project for the region – «Creative city – territory of development», which reflects innovative social practices, technologies of project training and the strategy of the University to fulfill its potential in the creative industries. Creative industries are a growth point for the regional “smart specialization”, significantly affecting the quality of life of the local communities and fulfilling not only current, but also emerging human needs. Therefore it is important to involve the younger generation in creative activities in order to develop experience of participation in new socio-economic processes. The discussion about the productivity of classical and project solutions in professional training programs determined the advantage of creative projects of students to present their competencies not only to potential employers, but also to other stakeholders in the development of the region. Initiatives in the Northern Design Cluster and the Tourism and Recreation Cluster of the Murmansk Region have become a new type of university activities; their the projects allow to attract experts to discuss areas of work and clusters cooperation models. Creative industries meet the challenges of the era, when for success the territories must use the resources of cultural brands, shape the quality of life by developing social spaces, non-standard use of color and light in design for psycho-emotional well-being. The project “Creative City – Territory of Development” makes it possible to get feedback from the local communities. The university consistently implements a strategy of expanding areas of participation in the life of the region, conducts research on integrating the modern Arctic design, socio-cultural and economic practices of municipalities. Therefore, the article analyzes the growth factors and ways of influence of the university on the regional community in the field of creative industries; emphasizes the complexity of the tasks and the increase in the number of stakeholders in the creative industries, underlines the fact that university projects are both the creative products and creative technologies for the formation of professional competences in the welfare industry, tourism and design.

The analysis of the material found in the sources of the Samogitian discourse of the second half of the 20th century, which builds upon the model of the categorization of values proposed by Viktor E. Frankl, makes it clear that the Samogitian daily discourse mainly focuses on creative values. Work is described as essential to everyone and making no harm to the human being. The person’s diligence is associated with one’s abilities, agility, understanding and trustworthiness, because many jobs require people’s collective action. Samogitians are convinced that diligence enables the person to live, to get rich and experience the meaning of life. Both personally and as a member of an ethnic community a Samogitian construes diligence as a quality giving an advantage over others and providing good grounds to brag. The possibility of subsistence and the quality of life are linked with work. However, excessive diligence is considered harmful, and therefore Samogitians advise not to forget common sense while working. The values which are based on experience and feeling are discussed far less commonly. In the sources of Samogitian discourse the expression of exper iential values is linked with joy and surprise about simple objects from the daily environment and the intention to draw the interlocutor’s attention towards them. Love is described as a universal feeling, but Samogitians are not prone to talk openly about it, unless they speak about the stories of their past. The person actualizes attitudinal values whenever he or she is confronted with the restrictions of life and reacts to the suffering sent by one’s fate. Samogitians are used to describe every person’s situation as resulting from the higher force or determined by one’s fate. The gift of life is described as meaningful per se and providing self-confidence.Hardships, troubles and pain are described as temporary conditions, which are easier to live through when one knows that it is always better to be alive than dead. Ethical values always require people to refuse certain temptations. Circumspection allows individuals to avoid deception in the form of abuse or flattery and to keep one’s dignity. The promotion of respect towards another and self-respect is based on the principle of equality by proposing not to treat others as you would not want them to treat you.The available sources of Samogitian discourse include a number of observations that the continuously improving conditions of life and work change people’s behaviour and values: an easier life changes people’s communication towards seclusion and alienation, reduces diligence and concern over the future, promotes effeminacy and lack of self-restraint expressed through the choice of a less virtuous lifestyle. According to interlocutors, the Samogitian language itself changes as well.

PENGUATAN SELF ESTEEM ANAKJALANAN MELALUI BIMBINGANMORAL SPIRITUAL(Pada Program Pendidikan LuarSekolah)Nur Afifah Khurin Maknin *)FAI UMMABSTRACTThe burden of street children is much heavy for their age, that they are prone topsychological stress which will affect the children’s emotional, social andintelligence growth, in the sense that the growth will not be maximal. In such acase, the NGO’s main programme to educate and train the children to beindependent by increasing their quality, improving their lives and by enablingthem to interact socially in their as well as in society will not be reached. In orderthat the programme planned by the NGO can be effective and efficient, thechildren should be physically and mentally healthy. To meet this condition, thechildren must be trained to raise their “self-esteem” so that they are mentallyhealthy. When they are mentally healthy, their physical and mental developmentwill hopefully grow optimally, so that they more ready and more able to solvetheir problem constructively. This research will answer the question of whethermoral and spiritual counselling will raise the street children’s self-esteem and willchange their quality of life with attitude especially those who have been educatedand trained by the NGOs.Spiritual and Moral Counselling is one which focuses on theunderstanding and application of moral and ethical values in society; it alsostresses on increasing the children’s self religius motivation so that they will bemotivated to increase their quality and able to be on their own normally. Thiscounselling will hopefully cause the children have high self-esteem and mentalhealth which can be seen from their change of attitude.Keyword:Moral and Spiritual Counselling,Self-Esteem, Quality of life, StreetChildren.

In 1962, Abraham Maslow published his bookTowards a Psychology of Being, and established a theory of quality of life, which still is considered a consistent theory of quality of life. Maslow based his theory for development towards happiness and true being on the concept of human needs. He described his approach as an existentialistic psychology of self-actualization, based on personal growth. When we take more responsibility for our own life, we take more of the good qualities that we have into use, and we become more free, powerful, happy, and healthy. It seems that Maslows concept of self-actualization can play an important role in modern medicine. As most chronic diseases often do not disappear in spite of the best biomedical treatments, it might be that the real change our patients have for betterment is understanding and living the noble path of personal development. The hidden potential for improving life really lies in helping the patient to acknowledge that his or her lust for life, his or her needs, and his or her wish to contribute, is really deep down in human existence one and the same. But you will only find this hidden meaning of life if you scrutinize your own life and existence closely enough, to come to know your innermost self.
