This chapter uses the example of Liberia’s returning population to offer a wider examination of the relationship between Appalachian residents and their family land. Using an anthropological lens, the chapter outlines the cultural process by which land becomes a member of one’s family. Specifically, the process entails ownership of family land, occupancy of family land, memories of that land, the merging of land and people through time, and finally the anthropomorphizing of land. The chapter ends with an Epilogue linking enslaved ancestors from the Oolenoy Valley with descendants still living in Liberia, and the sweep of history over the same landscape.

Some Challenges Found in the Elaboration of the Theory of ObjectificationThis article deals a reflection about some challenges encountered in the elaboration of a theory of Vygotskian inspiration about the teaching-learning of mathematics: the theory of objectification. We discuss the historical context from which the theory emerges and the difficulties encountered in conceiving learning not as a sub-subjective process, as proposed by constructivism, but as a genuine social-historical-cultural process. It is argued that one of the most important difficulties of contemporary sociocultural educational approaches lies in providing a clear theoretical description of the relationship between the individual and his culture. The answer of the theory of objectification is found in its concept of joint work.Handle: http://hdl.handle.net/10481/49438Scopus record and citation

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between farm size and agricultural production efficiency from the aspects of output and profit in order to find an optimal farm size that achieves both output and profit efficiency in agricultural production in China.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses the 2012 China Family Panel Studies survey data and employs the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) models to investigate empirically the relationship between farm size and agricultural production efficiency.FindingsThe study finds that there is an inverted-U curve relationship between farm size and output efficiency and a U-shaped curve relationship between farm size and profit efficiency in agricultural production in China. Based on the empirical results, the study estimates that the appropriate farm size is around 10–40 mu and the optimal farm size is around 20–40 mu both in terms of output efficiency and profit efficiency in Chinese agricultural production under the current agricultural technology and land management system.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study suggest that appropriate land consolidation will bring more benefits to farmer households and agricultural production efficiency. There are some policy implications. First, governments should give long term and more stable land using rights to farmers through extending the period of land contract and verifying land using rights. Second, governments should encourage transfers of land using rights and promote land consolidation. But the implementation of this policy should consider regional differences and not be used for blindly pursuing increasing land size. Third, land consolidation should be accompanied with the development of specialized agricultural services.Originality/valueThe paper makes two major contributions to the literature. First, the authors use the SFA model to investigate the relationship between land size and agricultural production efficiency. Second, the authors establish two SFA models – the stochastic frontier output analysis model and the stochastic frontier profit analysis model – to estimate the optimal land size to achieve both output and profit efficiency of agricultural production in China.

Abstract Using my 14-month ethnographic research at Old Bank, in the Caribbean coast of Panama, I seek to map how the domains I knew of this village were shaped by the multisensory relationships I established with my interlocutors and the spaces in which they lived, circled, and projected their voices. In dialogue with the Caribbean literature, I show how the locally established contrasts between before and today, as well as the existence of the distinct neighborhoods of the village, expressed the historical process of space occupation, based on the use, inheritance and collective ownership of family land. Finally, connext Ingold's argument about landscape with ethnographic data, underlining how Old Bank´s time and space are created through the relationship between human beings and God.

Without assuming prior legal knowledge, books in the Directions series introduce and guide readers through key points of law and legal debate. Questions, diagrams and exercises help readers to engage fully with each subject and check their understanding as they progress. The trust law that applies to family land might not be applicable to other types of land. Resulting trusts present a particular challenge in this regard. Although the doctrines of resulting trust have long been settled in the law of trusts, they have recently been questioned in the context of the family home. This chapter focuses on informal trusts of land and the social reasons why they are recognised, first looking at the problem of informality before turning to the different kinds of informal trusts of land. It also examines whether facts give rise to a resulting trust or a constructive trust, the practical significance of the distinction between constructive and resulting trusts of land, the relationship between proprietary estoppel and constructive trust, express agreement plus detrimental reliance, and the decision of the House of Lords in Stack v Dowden. The chapter concludes by considering some of the problems addressed by, and caused by, the operation of informal trusts in the context of cohabitation.

Abstract: Before their encounter with the immigrants, the Balim religious lifecentered in their honai adat (traditional house). However, since the presence ofdivine religions, the center of their ritual and spiritual life is devolving to churchesor mosques, and marginalizes the role of the honai adat. The presence of divinereligions has contributed to peoples way of life, especially in broadening theperspective of the Balim about human beings. The extent of human relationsperspective has played a major role in relativizing the influence of traditionalvalues to their ways of thinking and behaving. With few exceptions, the generalcolor manifested in the relationship between the two belief systems is thedominance of the divine religions to local one. Conversion to the divine religionsand process of community building in one religion is not merely a faith event, but also part of the cultural process, part of a strategy to open an access toa better life in economy, socio-politics, or even in spiritual aspects. In this case, the divine religions are challenged to present their faces as the ways of salvationwhich is humane and civilized.

Land conversion control in China remains in the shadow of the planned economy. Highly hierarchical governments fully control both land quotas and land approval, which are indispensable for each added area of construction land. But the actual mechanisms of land resource distribution, because they are masked by the ambiguity of institutional provisions, are opaque. This article discusses the theoretical influence of regional favouritism to birthplace on the expansion of construction land. Using a provincial-level dataset and detailed information about political cadres in the Ministry of Land and Resources, we estimate an econometric model that reflects the relationship between regional favouritism and construction land expansion. The results indicate that, all else equal, the birthplaces of political cadres receive a larger scale of construction land expansion than other locations. We further explore the paths of regional favouritism influencing construction land expansion. The results show that land approval and tolerance of illegal land due to regional favouritism together contribute to the expansion of construction land.

Videogame livestreamers on the platform Twitch present a carefully curated version of themselves negotiated in part via interactions with their viewers. This persona is encoded not just through their live performance, but also through other platform features including streamer-specific emoticons and audio-visual overlays triggered by stream events such as donations and subscriptions. From these customisable features emerges a complicated feedback loop between the streamer and non-streamer participants that ultimately results in a set of collective values performed and refined by both parties over time. In this paper I interrogate how the incorporation of Internet memes into streaming personas creates accessible avenues for communication with and between members of this collective that contribute significantly to this value system. I do this by defining the term memesis as the cultural process by which Internet users draw upon existing memes in order to create new memetic media. Through two contrasting case studies of Twitch streamers BrownMan and PaladinAmber, I examine how memesis reflects streamer agency and impacts the structure and values of stream collectives. In particular, I draw attention to the relationship between memes and stream collectives as it relates to streamer identity, memetic histories within streams, and the contrasting explicit and latent values within manifestations of particular memes, among others. Further, understanding how memesis renders visible the encoding of meaning and value into manifestations of meme by emphasising the creation process over the memetic product, I argue that the concept has value not just on Twitch, but within broader digital cultural spheres.

Palabras clave: antropología - institucionalización - filosofía prácticaAbstractThis work aims to analyze the relationship between discursive ethics and history, based on the reconstruction by Karl-Otto Apel in the 1999 in Mercier Lectures (Leuven). The relation- ship with the past points to the positioning regarding the moral and institutional situation “inherited” by tradition (substantial ethics). The relationship with the present refers to the “human situation”, understood as an evolutionary-cultural process (from hominization to the present) and as a “moment” or particular situation within that process. Finally, the relationship with the future alludes to the ability of ethics to guide human history towards a normative horizon, as a regulative ideal. Keywords: Anthropology - institutionalization - practical philosophyResumoO seguinte artigo propõe analisar a relação entre a ética do discurso e história, desde a reconstrução realizada por Karl-Otto Apel nas Mercier Lectures de 1999 (Lovaina).
